In the Key of 'Life'
Olivia Francis, AKA Turquoise Rose
This adventure began in Quanah, Texas on the 4th of July, 1952.
At age one my folks moved my brothers and I west to Bakersfield, Calif.
At the ripe old age of seven I began pursuing the echoing sounds of
neighborhood garage bands down suburban alleys.
Coming from a long line of musicians, writers and artists it was
a natural path for me to follow.
In 1965 we relocated to Santa Barbara, Calif. where I spent my teen years
building sand castles, and attending many concerts.
I sat mesmerized in the presence of Greats, including Jimi Hendrix,
Led Zepplin, The Byrds and several others.
Day dreamed about singing backup for Olivia Newton John,
conspired on how to ship myself to the Monkeys and partied hardy with the
Rolling Stones while cruising the strip with my friends.
In 1971 we left the coast and headed inland again, this time to Prescott, Ariz.
where I met up and sang with many talented musicians.
Started with Rock, eased into Country then began expanding my repertoire
with other genre.
From there I moved to Dallas, Tx. in 1983 and began seeking a band.
I performed at the Wylie, Mesquite and Garland Oprys.
Then in '85 I auditioned for and was hired by "Flashback", a variety band
as a lead/backup vocalist.
(We had a teenage Elvis impersonator by the name of Gary Ladell)
who was excellent! The band consisted of 7 members:
Ronnie Dee/ "Italian Stallion"/Drums, band leader.
Mr.Roy Rogers/"Huggy-Bear"/Lead Guitar, Vocals,
Mike Fugget/"Doctor Love"/Bass, vocals,
Ms. Gloria Mosley/"Lady Soul"/ Lead and Backup vocals
Doug Baskin/"The Professor"/Keys
and last but not least, me/"Sparkles"/Lead and Backup vocals.
In 1989 I moved to Amarillo and joined the Country-Rock band "Kracker Jack".
Then in 1990 at the age of 37 I packed my Cadillac and headed to Nashville
only to be swayed to go back home by one of the famous Country Greats
who advised me not to waste my time cause I was too old!
My only regret thus far is that the bug to pursue music in Nashville didn't
bite me when I was in my early 20's.
My influences range from Olivia Newton-John/JaniIan/Janis Joplin/Joni Mitchell
Heart/Rolling Stones/ Eagles/Beatles to Linda Ronstadt/Bonnie Raitt/EmmyLou Harris/Loretta Lynn/Dolly Parton/Tammy Wynette/Patsy Cline/Sara Evans
Shania Twain/Keith Urban/and many more.
In July, 2005 I entered my song "Half A Woman" into a song writing contest
where it placed among the top five finalists in the Country category at:
www.songoftheyear.com "Walk in Faith" (2007) and "Mama Prayed" (2008)
won the 'Suggested Artist Award'.
Am a former FWSA member, and current BMI affiliate.
