The Age of Reason

Description
This is an old song, written when I was in college, but never performed by any of the bands I was in. It was origonally going to be an accoustic number when I first wrote it, but when I started messing with it in GB I decided to add to it. I've been working on it off and on for about three months and have gotten as far as I can go for right now. Runs about 6:40. The only loops are the drums.

Lyrics
The sun sets in the eastern sky
clouds grow heavy with the rain of confusion
A lonely man sits on the edge of a dream
He sees the sunset of the age of reason
He sees the sunset of the age of reason

Above the Earth, a thousand miles high
No sign of strife or endless turmoil
A lonely woman sits on the edge of a dream
Blind to the sunset of the age of reason
Blind to the sunset of the age of reason

I heard it from a prophet on cable TV
He knew what was best for me
I saw the words written in the book of time

This is the sunset of the age of reason
This is the sunset of the age of reason

The night falls and the children cry
victims of fear and endless darkness
A lonely child smiles at the thought of his dream
He sees the sunrise of the age of reason
He sees the sunrise of the age of reason

Very Good Song
First thought - I can imagine David Sylvain singing this song.
Excellent melody and arrangement. Your singing here
reminds me of Neil Young.
As I was listening I was wondering if it were possible to bring
the bass up in the mix and brighten its tone without
obscuring the other parts.
Although this may be an old song, the lyrics are relevant and
will probably remain so for our lifetimes.

Very Good Song
I must admit, I didn't have a clue as to who David Sylvian was before you
mentioned him, but I've started checking out some of his stuff and it's pretty
interesting.

The bass line was one of the last things I added to the song. It could be brighter.
I'll add that to my list of things to tinker with when I hit this tune again.

I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. And thanks for the
comparisons. You may have sparked another David Sylvian fan.

yes
your voice reminded me of YES.
youve got such a clear and beautiful voice.
the song has a bit of progressive flavor mainly
because of your voice, i think.... very nice!

beautiful
I don't normally read comments before I comment, but I
did this time mostly because I could do it quickly given
that there are so few of them. Don't know why that is, this
is a beautiful tune. I really like your voice. It clearly
displays your soul and your pure intent in a grand and
vulnerable way on this tune. I could never do this. I try to
hide behind my instruments of choice however, but it
doesn't work; people here are sharp and on to what's
going on w/ me. You are inspiring to me have me one
step closer to releasing a vocal track.

I too am having Yes flashbacks...however, this feels very
orignal. The lyrics are very poetic...Very well done. I the
like the progression/nice melody/nice symmetry and
chord structures/how'd ya get such a nice and chunky
base???

I think that we have all sat watched this particular sunset
at one point or another.

Very nice work Jg. Thanks for posting this one.

beautiful
Aw man. Thanks for the comments, Cydniko. I'm glad you like this one. I've had
an on again/off again relationship with this tune for about 15 years. It's come a
long way in that time.

As for the bass, I monkied around with one of the GB synth basses until I came
across something I liked. It was the last this I did and was the one I probably
spent the most time fiddling with.

Terrific Guitars!
This is all around great. The lyrics remind me of HoJo's Hide and Seek, but the song itself is nothing like it. (Have you noticed that for me, all things come back to Howard Jones? It's a sickness.)

This is an epic song, but you do a great job of keeping the sound nice and varied, moving elements in and out. Your voice is terrific on this and I agree with the comparisons to Neil Young. It's too bad more people haven't heard this song because it's up there with the best on the site, IMHO.

I also find it interesting that you wrote this circa 1990. The style is quite a reach for that period.

The only suggestion I have is to the reduce the reverb on the piano a little bit, especially in the solo section, but not by much.

Again, I'm very impressed by this, j. I also wanted to tell you that I laughed my butt off about the John Cusack montage sequence your wrote in the comments for a song (which I can't remember the name of).

John Cusak Rules!
Thanks for the very kind comments, Lisa. I'll take any comparison to Howard
Jones I can get. I'm glad you like this and the reaction overall has been positive. I
was actually more apprehensive about posting this song that anything else I've
done so far. Thanks again for listening and you comments!

Very nice!
Couldn't tell if it was long sustain fuzz guitar at the end to
fatten it up. I liked the fattening and, for the most part, it
works well but I would have liked more definition in what
was doing it. I particularly liked how the song evolved
into the fatness at the end.

The falling tone on rea...son got to me a bit. I was
wondering what it would sound like it if it were a single
syllable that sustained but that would hit the lyrics in the
heart. I still think it might be worth considering, tho'.

You push your voice as far as it will go and that's most
impressive. I wonder if you can use a bit of effect so you
don't have to work as hard.

It may sound like I'm trying to shred your tune but that's
not it at all. If I didn't think the tune was worth it, I
wouldn't waste my time. It's quite a good piece.

Very nice!
Thanks for the feedback, Alan. I appreciate the comments and suggestions. You've got a great critical ear. When I wrote this one years ago, I had a much better vocal range than I do now, so I kind of strain now and then. I also keep looking for a good guitar amp setting that gets me a good, fat buzz saw sound, but also isn't quite as muddy as the one I usually use. (Of course the muddy sound covers up the fact I don't play guitar well.)

I appreciate you taking the time to listen and make suggestions. I glad you liked the song.
