I Play Guitar Electric

The first time I heard Walt Whitman’s line “I sing the body electric” was in a high school English class and I think I rewrote it on the spot. That would have been back in 1967, so this piece has had a long incubation. I took numerous stabs at broadening it into a full-fledged song of my own, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago, when I started bouncing rhyming three-syllable adjectives back and forth with Roy Buckley (who developed the text for “The Tale of Genji”) that it seriously began taking shape. It has gone through several recorded versions since then; this is the first time I have tried producing a version with GarageBand.

I roll the pole magnetic

I lick the lips necrotic
I flip the hips sclerotic
I crack the whip exotic
I suck on nips erotic
These are the psychotic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I poke the eye cyclopic
I churn the urn canopic
I flex the limbs entropic
I snap sandals flipflopic
These are the heroic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I tame the flame volcanic
I tempt the fate sarcastic
I wheeze the breeze asthmatic
I squeeze the knees orgasmic
These are the pathetic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I chit the chat Socratic
I plot the proof erratic
I cube the root quadratic
I take the break sabbatic
These are the scholastic things I do
What more will it take to please you?

I hum the hymn harmonic
I tap the dance demonic
I stretch the truth elastic
I drop the hint bombastic
These are the dramatic things I do
What more will it take to please you?
