Description
OK, so its another protest song of sorts - there's so much to protest about these days! This was inspired by our first "race riots" at Cronulla Beach (where, incidentally, I grew up surfing in my youth), but wait, there's more!

Good T-shirt available here! For Jihn Howard and George Bush fans!

Lots of harmonies on this - hope you enjoy it. As usual, PLAY IT LOUD!

PEACE in 2006!

Lyrics
You Lied
© 2005 Neil Porter

Now I’ve gained your full attention
Now you’re looking in my eyes
There’s some things I didn’t mention
And I hope you’ll sympathise
I’m getting kind of angry
And I’m getting kind of “pass another beer”
Wasn’t sure of your intentions
Can’t somebody get me out of here?

You’ve been messing with my memories
You’ve been thinking I don’t care
You’ve been trying hard to tempt me
Now I worry what I wear
I’ve been getting worry weary
I’ve been telling you to look the other way
And you’re talking like you know me
But I’ve stopped believing everything you say

Many times I’m thinking that you
Take me for a one-way ticket ride
Many times I think that you’re
Abusing your position and you lied

There’s unlimited detention
We’ve lost children overboard
Putting limits on dissention
Saps the power of the word
You’re invading other countries
You’ve turned our own into a land of fear
But we made it to the World Cup
There’s not much else that matters over here

INSTRUMENTAL

Many times I’m thinking that you
Took me for a one-way ticket ride
Many times I think that you’re
Abusing your position and you lied

In the latest indignation
One that gets the gold award
We’ve got riots on our beaches
It’s the power of the sword
Just when you think “can’t get much worse”
It seems to nearly every other day
I just sit alone and wonder
If this kind of thing is really here to stay

Now I’ve gained your full attention
Now you’re looking in my eyes
There’s some things I didn’t mention
And I hope you’ll sympathise
I’m getting kind of angry
And I’m getting kind of “pass another beer”
If you’re looking for redemption
You’d best be looking somewhere else than here

Love this tune
What an absolutely brilliant tune with fabulous, killer lyrics to start
2006.

Love the byrdsy jangle too.

The only thing I'd say is that the mix could do with more sparkle as
some of the elements are lost in the soup.

Love this tune
Thanks David for the listen and the comment. I had considered a "trimmed"
version of this to get a crisper sound, but decided against it - still has
something like 10 vox tracks though (not all there at once I should add). Any
suggestions regarding getting a crisper mix would be very welcome.
Happy New Year, Neil

Your developing a terrific style in your songs, like the way the rythum
permeates througout the song. Your singing here is terrific, chuck full of
great style.
Plus you have really developed the story quite well.

Thanks Bill. I was happy with the bass and guitars on this, although they
seem a bit muddier in the mp3 version for some reason. I appreciate your
visit and comments as always. Hope you have a fantastic 2006!

Great Performance
I agree with eltopo that there is a definite mid-Byrds here which is
nothing but great. I also agree with tiler that you have come a long way
from a self proclaimed non-singer to beautiful harmonies like these.
Way to go, keep it up! I've liked all of your stuff but you are getting
better with each one.

Great Performance
Thanks for the comment Tom - McGuinn is one of my musical heroes, and I
probably spent far too much time in my younger days listening to him and
the Byrds I really appreciate your comments about the improvements I've
made over the past 6 months or so - it has been a very satisfying period in
my life from a musical point of view.
Happy new year,

All politicians lie
That opinion is one reason why I believe is important to limit government
power. :)
Very cool song and performance.

All politicians lie
Bill, they say that no matter who you vote for, a politician always gets in. This
has never been truer than what we have here (and I suspect there) at the
moment. I'm working on the principal that every little bit helps to change
things - problem here is that our opposition is nearly as bad as our
government. Although I get the feeling that I'm often preaching to the
converted here at MJ, songs are one avenue to spread a message. Thanks for
the kind comment on the song - I appreciate you spending some time
listening.
Cheers, Neil

You are a true musician and a political voice. Great sound.
Reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel and The Byrds. This could easily go
into Folk category, too.

Richard, for having a listen and for the positive comments. I take any
mention of The Byrds (or S&G for that matter) in reference to my music as a
great compliment indeed!

Now with jigumaSound!
The patented ingredient that puts jangle in your guitars, thickness in
your harmonies, thump into your bass, and wit into your lyrics...

Now available in Regular, Deep Australian, and
Neopostmodernmcguinn...

Ask for the original at your local MacJams!

I'm plainly out of the loop on the politics of this one, but the guy in the
picture looks too pompous for words...

At this point, Neil, I'm more or less studying you, just getting a sense
of how you do what you do...

Ed
jiguma said 4196 days ago (January 1st, 2006)
Now with jigumaSound!
Hi Ed, thanks for the comment - the sound is simply what happens when I get
near some guitars and stuff, and is probably a mix of my rhythmic
background (playing bass with congas - no drums - in the 70s) and the fairly
limited constraints of my voice. One thing for sure is that Logic Express
makes it better - you need to take a big breath and jump in. Start with a
simple voice/guitar song and play with the mixers etc. Easiest way is to open
a GB song you already have and "twiddle the knobs".

Politically, the photo is of our illustrious prime minister, John Howard, who is
intent on taking us back to the 50s (not the nice part of the 50s either!). I
won't go on about him - just see him as an evil little man who thinks latching
on to George Bush's coattails is a smart move, and you get the picture.

Happy new year Ed, all the best.

A new Jiguma flavour!

Neil: Your music has been the most played music choice here in our
house during the past holliday. I have been thinkin that it can't become
much better than that. So original! So tasteful!

And now this. A new flower on your tree! With a new flavour! So tasty I
almost forget that the lyrics speak serious business. Wow. Just wow!

Just wow!

Hi Curry, Happy New Year!! Thanks for being so kind with your comments - I
always look forward to your comments on my songs. Hope your family coped
OK with all that subversive Aussie stuff. We had 44 degrees yesterday and a
fairly serious bushfire on the hills across the bay - I'm hoping there's a new
song in there somewhere to add a rather hot flower to the tree for you.

I look forward to your next musical offering my Swedish friend.

Tack själv igen och glad Nyåren!

Not dissonance...
Well Mr. Jiguma, it just seems that I am not gonna make it to anywhere
near a cumputer that will sing your song soon enough, So I'm just
dropping in to 'drop' my name and to grade you on your amazing
'poem'...

You know the word, or the poetic ways to state things, well I don't even
attempt to imagine that I could pull this sort of thing off. It requires a
special something that you continue to demonstrate that you were
gifted plenty 'enough to share'... As I read, my thoughts are, 'now why
is Jiguma singing about us, 'the americans' why is he singing about
their 'leader'... Just kidding of course.

Your message and this state of mind or high level of 'fed up ness', it
surley does travel across big waters, up and down highest mountain
peeks, unaffected by the most secured borders, countless bad hair
days and the ticking of time, your words endure all of this for the sole
purpose, to resonate... And just how cool is that...

Ha! - 'Resonance'... No matter how big or bad the powers are, there
isn't 'one' in the known universe that can be big enough to mess that
up... - And this my friend, this is how we win...

Keep singing your songs, Neil. Cheers! Dion

Hey Dion - wow, 19 lines and you haven't even heard it - I'm impressed : )

Hope you get yourself near a computer with speakers soon - how about some
phones? I have a new one ready that I expect you'll like, but I'm waiting for
the 10 bomber to disappear first.

Hope you have a brilliant year in 2006 my friend!

This track made me smile. What a cool feel! It's really loose which I
think enhances the sort of Byrds-60's feel of the track. The lyrics are
great, too. You could do it with synths and samples and quantize the
hell out of it and it would totally lose that strumming along kind of
feel. Nice track.

Thanks for listening Richard, and for your comment. I've tried synths and
stuff, but they really don't suit what I do that much - I'm very definitely "old
school" as far as music (I like bits of wood with strings on them!). I'm very
pleased that people like yourself can see the Byrds connection in ther.
Cheers,
Neil

Bread and Circuses
The "World Cup" line won me over completely. You have an uncanny
ability to take the issues facing us today and translating them into
something that satisfies, make you think, and makes you angry. Just
like a good protests song should. While you are obviously angered by
not only what's going on in the world as a whole, but the unfortunate
ugliness that recently ripped though your own home, your protests are
never angry or bitter. They are smooth, catchy and laid back. Very
measured and satisfying, but musically and lyrically.

I love the thick, rich harmonies. They add a nice dimension to the song
and fit in really well. I totally agree with the Byrds comparisons. The
whole package from the vocals to the nice, thick melodic guitar song
rings of the music from the 60s protest movement.

You are rapidly becoming my favorite political commentator. :) Much
better than the talking heads on television. And it really is kind of
frightening just how similar our two countries have become politically
as our insane "leaders" here in the USofA try to spread their particular
form of insanity across the world.

Bread and Circuses
Cheers Joseph,
Glad this one tickled your fancy! I'm really happy to hear your very kind
comments. My next song is called "Up To You" and (very obtusely) invites
people to respond to the madness of the world we're developing - should be
up soon. I'm getting more and more anxious as my daughter's baby's birth
(our first grandchild) comes closer - I can't help feeling sad about the type of
world we've created for her and her generation.
Unfortunately I don't expect things are going to change radically (or indeed in
any way we're likely to notice) real soon now.
Thanks again for your support!

Your sound is very different. Kind of reminds me of grateful dead maybe rusted root. And the echo thing is a good touch. Although the effect you use kind of takes away from the song a little. A sipler version may be better in my opinion
