Description
I wrote this song while in high school--and decided to resurrect it the other day to see what I could do with it in GarageBand. A lot of it ended up coming across like I've been hearing it in my head for all these years--and there are other parts I had not even imagined would be in the song.

I don't remember writing it because of something that had happened in my life--i think it was just one of those songs that float around in yer head.

Lyrics
Rearview Mirror
words and music by arin m.
2006

I looked into the rearview mirror/ And saw your hand wave in the air/ I put a kiss on my fingertips/ Then let my breath take it there./ I drove away on that sunny day/

The dust clouds up along the road/ I can no longer see your face/ All of the times we shared together/ Will never be replaced/ Cause I drove away on that sunny day/

Can someone help me ease the pain/ of a time that no longer remains?/ I drive in desperate search of something/ But all I seem to find is nothing/

The scenery-it starts changing/ And now Im far away from you/ Many things should not have happened/ How could I've been so untrue?/ So i drove away on that sunny day/

Can someone help me ease the pain/ of a time that no longer remains?/ I drive in desperate search of something/ But all I seem to find is nothing/

I should have known that something that good doesn't come along every mile/ now Im alone and I live with it/ Thats half the trial/

I love it!
This is great. Did you program the drums yourself? That's something I can never be bothered to do.
This reminds me of a lot of the stuff I like listen to. I can imagine it being used in the final scene of an episode of something like Dawson's or Smallville. You must be very happy with it.

thanks!
lets see...if programming drums means the same thing as using and
manipulating loops--then yes. If not--then...umm...nope. I just used GB loops
for this. Im not very skilled with the technical aspects of music production--
so--loopage and the sounds in my head are what get me semi where I want to
go. Oh-- and it would be fun to hear it played at the end of a tv show. hee hee

Very Nice!!
Love the lyrics. Your voice is wonderful. Absolutely great song!!

I noticed the vocals only on the left side. Maybe this was intentional?
Otherwise the production sounded great! Thanks for sharing it!!

hiya there!
Thanks for the comments! I dont know whats going on with the left-sided-
ness. I think ive had that trouble on other songs too. One reason may be that it
seems my headphones are only working on one side. However--I usually check
the song on multiple computers before finalizing it--and it sounds okay on
there. "sigh" just another one of those technical things. Thank you for your
kind compliments.

Lovely song, well sung.
You've got such a wonderful soulful voice - nice arrangement too. I
enjoyed the harmony vox towards the end - perhaps you could do more
with this throughout the song as well?

Nicely done
You have a very nice voice! However, there was something weird for
me about the way the drums came in--they never really seemed to fall
comfortably in place for me for this whole song.

Dig the fingersnaps, though, and the artwork! I'll definintely check out
the other stuff you've got posted. THANKS for sharing.

P.S. As for the harmonies--they are beautiful, and I think you are right
on to use them a bit sparingly. This gives them more impact!

hey there hi there
Thanks fer writin'. I understand what you mean about the drums. I hadnt
originally planned to start the drums where they presently start--but somehow
they got stuck there. Im still undecided about that.

You dig the artwork? Hooray! I am starting to dabble more in photoshop and
am having a fine time creating things.

Thank you for listening!

I think you are just great - I really mean it. I really like your voice most of

Keep it up.

Fresh
I love the song, the sound and especially your voice.. I'd work a bit on
remix with some compression but otherwise... this is a great tune
Arin said 1341 days ago (March 26th, 2006)
thankso lotso
Thank you for the comments! Can you help me to understand the "remix with
some compression" you talked about in your comment? Im assuming it is
something technical-like, and I need all the help I can get in that area.

Very Good
You have an excellent voice and use it well. I like the lyrics, they remind
me of points in my life that I regret.
The production seems unbalanced to me, mostly because the voice is only
appearing in the left channel, as mentioned previously. I think you can fix
this in GB if you identify the input as channel 1 (Mono) in the track info
window and make sure to keep the panning knob near the center. You
might then play around with your harmony vocals in the stereo space.
Arin said 1337 days ago (March 30th, 2006)
thank you so much for the tips!
---wow what a difference that made! I went back into the song--and for some
reason the main vocal was set on 1 &2 stereo-- which seemed kinda weird--
because I always thought it was set on channel 1 mono....but I guess it wasnt! I
could tell the difference instantly! This was just the advice I was looking for--
thank you for taking the time to explain it to me.

sincerely greatful- arin

this is a hit song!!
I would imagine this song doing very well in the uk. Less is more maybe
with the arrangement.Sing the song with more intense feeling and with a
rock feel. Shout some of the words. Absolutely fab song.
I am none technical but love this song. Rework remix.
Pleased to have discovered your work.

What a gem...
This is a very mellow track. Great voice - great vocals - not "over-sung".
The whole thing sounds very engineered - good mixing, have a nice mix
of frequencies. Excellent job! I will be checking out some of your other
stuff. Thanks for sharing.

P.S. I second the artwork comment. Very cool, not too much done around
here in the way of artwork - very refreshing!

mono
I had the same problem when I started using garage band. Actually after I bought a mic and firewire solo they just sat around in thier boxes for awhile. My first song had left channel vocals too. I imagine it really takes a long while to aquire technical expertise. Im glad mungo explained it to you.

The song is great and the harmony in the last section is wonderful. Im looking forward to your future posts

Good Song
Very good song, especially liked the harmonies during the verses.

I liked that you kept the arrangement simple and cut the drums in the line before the chorus.

The mix with the vocals on one channel really didn't bother me all that much. The Beatles used to do things like that and they weren't too bad.

Well done.

I just stoped by to hear your newest tune. I love 'drifted' and had it on the stereo when my wife asked who's that sweet voiced singer. So I'm back and I like your new tune very much. great job, I'm looking foward to hearing your next tune

A perfectly good start to the end of a day
So, MJ here started this auto-play on their front page...

Guess which song came up first? ^_^

I must say, I am very impressed with the control of your voice-- and excellent use of loops. I'd honestly be hard pressed to criticize anything about this, short of the oft-mentioned mono-for-stereo issue, which you seem to have now resolved.

That said, I look forward to hearing more of your tracks after I finish posting this.
