The Music of America - kids sing

Description
I posted my original version of this a few weeks ago at http://www.macjams.com/song/18760. Now, here it is as the students themselves sing it. This is the audio stripped from a couple of DV recordings from which I'm making DVDs for the students, so you'll hear the talking audience, screaming babies and forgotten chords in all their glory. I'm playing the piano, a very talented fourth grade boy is playing the guitar, and 80 third and fourth grade students are singing. I hope you enjoy hearing this song in the real world of elementary school music concerts.

Lyrics
The Music of America

Listen to the music of America.
Listen to the voices far and near.
Listen to the music of America.
A song, free and strong, is what you’ll hear.

From the North or from the South, from the East or from the West,
Every person has a tune or a legend they love best.
When we share our songs & stories and the messages they bear,
We begin to understand our bonds with people everywhere.

Listen to the music of America.
Listen to the voices far and near.
Listen to the music of America.
A song, free and strong, is what you’ll hear.

When we think about the past, and our noble history,
When the people sought their dreams and when they faced adversity,
Songs were sung to pass the time, or help them work, or tough it out.
And their music gives a glimpse of what their lives were all about.

Listen to the music of America.
Listen to the voices far and near.
Listen to the music of America.
A song, free and strong, A song, free and strong,
A song, free and strong, is what you’ll hear.

Very Nice
I enjoy writing for people who will appreciate my work, and these kids definitely
do! They gave a great concert, and, you're right, it is a cool feeling to hear a
song you've written being performed.

Great to hear!
The kids sound great! Nice to hear a song with a patriotic theme of
MUSIC! Very nice performance... I even liked how you left the baby's cry at
the end!

Great to hear!
It's really amazing what other sounds creep through besides what you expect at
a school concert. When I'm performing with the kids, I'm usually so focused on
the music I don't notice the ambient noise until I listen to the recording. As I'm
working on the DVD, it's neat to also see the expressions on the kids faces as
they sing.
Thanks for listening. I'm glad you enjoyed the performance.

Very Nice
I also like the American MUSIC theme to this. Especially in these days of waning interest in music at the elementary level. You should seek out a publisher for this, it's really a good song for the grade level.

Very Nice
I'm glad you mentioned the need for music in the school program. I'm fortunate
that in Wisconsin, music is required at the elementary level, and in my district
we have the students for an hour a week. I could go on all day about how
important music is for kids, but I'd be preaching to the choir, as it were. Thanks
for listening and commenting.

Very Nice
I feel very lucky...we switched my younger son to a 5/6 charter school where they have 1 to 1 1/2 hours of band instruction per day! Ou rold school had an hour a week but the music teacher was nowhere near your caliber. Keep up the good work!

Wonderful
Getting to hear the actual performance with who the music was written for, I'm even more impressed. This piece has such wonderful character.

Hearing it with the choir, the originality compared to other pieces of this type really shines through.

By the way, these kids have some of the best diction I've heard for a 3rd & 4th grade choir of that size. :)

Wonderful
Thanks for listening and commenting. I'll tell the students about your comment
on their diction. They'll be very proud. We had two goals for this concert: one
was singing clearly enough to be understood by the audience, and the other was
to have smooth transitions between pieces. (3rd & 4th graders know they
shouldn't wiggle when on stage, but it's hard to make themselves stand still &
refrain from talking when they're excited.)

Pure voices
Listening to the beautiful voices of children singing,my family was large and poor, but we always made Ma happy singing. Many times we didn't know the words, but that didn't atter, she and we loved them all.
Outstanding
