Description
This is the very first song I wrote back in early 1993. My marriage was in it's infancy and our first child was due in a couple of months. My partying days were seemingly over. Naturally, I was thinking of those "good old days" when this this was written.
I recorded the acoustic guitar and vocal on seperate tracks simultaneously in one continuous take. The track was then sent to stevec and Texas Feel for bass and lead guitar- my conditions were that they learn it and then record it in one take- the goal was to create a played "LIVE" recording. The next challenge was to add drums. For this, themasses was recruited. His task was not easy- I wanted a played live sound and my tempo tends to waver somewhat.

Lyrics
Here is the story and I tell you the truth
It happened just this way
s'bout me and my buddies
and growing up in the glory days
This is a song of youth, of life and of friends
They were the ones who would stick by your side
Until the end
Well pick me up at 8 o'clock
We'll drink some beers then hit the bars
and if you're low on gasoline
Well, hell we'll take my car
someone's got to drink lite beer
so we all arrive all right
Mom and Dad, I won't be home tonight
I'm not a poet
a singer of love songs or lullabyes
that make you cry
But I'd like to tell you the things we did
Just to get by
Cruisin' to the beach
on a sunny summer afternoon
Kickin' back on the sand
and cranking out those tunes
We were head over heels just trying to impress
the pretty girls
But that was a distant time
a different world
The years have flown by
the situations changed and so have we
We fought it for awhile but now we're grown up
and raising families
And I never thought I'd say these words out loud
but I got a good job
a little house on the hill
and a big old family car
Well pick me up at 8 o'clock
We'll drink some beers then hit the bars
and if you're low on gasoline
Well, hell we'll take my car
someone's got to drink lite beer
so we all arrive all right
Mom and Dad, I won't be home tonight
Well pick me up at 8 o'clock
We'll drink some beers then hit the bars
and if you're low on gasoline
We can take my wife's car
someone's got to drink iced tea
so we all arrive all right
Tell your wife
you won't be late tonight
tonight
tonight
tonight
It happened just this way
s'bout me and my buddies
