Description
It's been 4 weeks since our grandaughter Aja came into the world, and this is where the lullaby I started writing ended up. This is also my first post in a month - a long time for me.

Musically, it's one track of guitar miked in stereo doing the picking; lead and harmony guitar leads; bass and some percussion loops. No fx on the doubled vocal tracks apart from a little reverb and a slight delay between them.

This is one of my first which isn't designed to be played loud (although it wouldn't hurt!).

Thanks to Uncle Dion for giving his time!

Angel Eyes
© 2006 Neil Porter

I heard you cry
I saw your smile
I fell in love
Your daddy’s nose
Your mummy’s eyes
It’s true

Angel eyes
Aja smiles
Angel eyes

Close your eyes
And go to sleep
My little one
Dream your dreams
We have our own
For you

Angel eyes
Aja smiles
Angel eyes

We shut the windows
On today
The night has come
Time for you
To drift away
To sleep

Angel eyes
Aja smiles
Angel eyes

I heard you cry
I saw your smile
I fell in love
Your daddy’s nose
Your mummy’s eyes
It’s true

Man, that was quick
And you know I'm chumpn' at the bits, Neil - This is a beautiful piece of work, no doubt - Dangit! And, this is really good. As many times as I've heard this, it still melts my soul down to a sweet little puddle as I'm listening now. Very pluckn', sir - I never mentioned this, but your voice sounds much richer on this then on previous tunes of yours - New mic, different adjustments, is it my Chereos, or is this the sound of a proud grandpa... - You should be proud - A beautiful tune, for a beautiful little angel - Thanks for sharing everything about this, grandpa -

Soon to be,

Uncle

Man, that was quick
Thanks for getting here so quick Dion - I was looking forward to you weaving
your magic here, but maybe next time. The vocal was done as a first take
between cooking courses for dinner - maybe it was the red wine :)
We'll get something done together sometime soon, and I'm looking forward
to it.
Thanks my friend,
Neil

sweet song
Wow, this is a really love;y piece of music, with great production. The
music certainly suits the lyric, like a sweet little lullaby.
I really like your voice in a major way - it actually reminded me tiny bit of
roger waters (When the Tigers broke free), but generally sounded really
unique, and i love the whispery singing.

Great stuff man.

Thanks e.r. for the comment about the vox. I think I've run out of mileage on
this, but will throw it at you anyway - I'm a fairly recent convert to the singing
thing, so there was certainly (and still is) a long way to go. I really enjoy
writing, playing and singing (and being a grandpa - maybe that's it!).
Cheers,

Charming
As someone who has fairly recently become a father for the first time I
guess I'm kinda close to where you are with this song it reminds me of
those quiet nightime moments when my son fell asleep after a feed
and I just looked at him in wonder.

But also as a now experienced father I couldn't help thinking when you
sung "time for you to drift away to sleep" that she'll be screaming for a
feed in a couple of hours!

Such a delightful song tho' and I enjoyed your playing (as I did your
bass on Stevel's latest). Top stuff.

Greetings Komrade (haven't said that since 75!) - please note that I said "time
for you to drift away to sleep". Nothing about her actually doing that!
I thought a lullaby would be pretty easy to do, but I just can't get away from
the rhythmic picking even on a lullaby. This was quite a difficult song to
write because it had to be simple and soft - and I had to keep wiping away
the tears of joy and amazement at my daughter's strength and courage.
All the best for your family - one of the great joys in life!!
Oh yes - and thanks for the comment.

oooo sweeeeeet
She is going to be one proud grand daughter when she gets old enough to understand what a great presant you've made for her.

You have told me that I am improving with my music lately Neil and I am very pleased to hear you say so:)
You have certainly taken multiple steps forward in the improving department yourself. This is no doubt the best I've heard from you, and I am very impressed with what you've made here.

Your voice is clear and sound very very good. Your arrangements, production and mix is to of the shelf. Every gizmo used has it's place and will work if it where listened to alone I'm sure. That gives you a professional sound, and you've done this with great confidence.

The sound of that tiny bell is just right, and your guitarpicking is beautiful. The perc is well matched together with the bass, and it gives just the solid foundation for the song.
The small soloing sound great as well.

As you may understand, I could dig this one a lot:)
Very very good Neil! This will get a hi-priority on my iPod list for a while:)

PS: Could you tell me one thing... I noticed you put one of your songs up in the Ikhabod review thread. Did his comments have anything to do with how you approached this one?

jiguma said 3980 days ago (July 2nd, 2006)
oooo sweeeeeet
Thor, firstly, thank you for taking the time to write this very heart-warming
comment. I had planned to write a simple lullaby with strummed guitar, no
bass, no percussion, but it seems I can't do that. The tiny bell sound (actually
a triangle loop with some tweaking) set this up for something a bit more
percussive - the lyrics came last.
A good question about the Ikhabod review on "Too Many Ghosts". I put that
song up with some confidence that it would come out fairly well and was a
little surprised at first regarding Ikh's comments - however, when I really
thought about them, he was (mostly) on the money. As a result I've tried to
be a bit more careful on more recent posts (except Jiguma Blues, which was a
rushed novelty for me) - especially Angel Eyes, which was (for obvious
reasons) very important to me.
I have really only recently started to take my songs more seriously - partly
due to Ikh's review - and hope
this will be a yardstick for new ones I've got in the works at the moment.
Sorry, a bit of a tangent there.
Thanks again Thor - I'm glad you can see some improvement.

Innocence
The crystalline fingerpicking is a marvelous setup to this pristine, floating
tune. Your opening words set up the song so quickly, effortlessly. And
then such a sweet, short chorus that drops right back into the groove, so
nice. Wonderful bass work. (There are times the MIDI sounding conga
seems to live in a different space, and one of the hits are too panned left
and should have been monof-ied and then mix, perhaps. Also, the end
seems rather sudden, I wondered why you chose the cut off instead of a
held finish to let the music cascade away in reverb, which is what my ears
wanted.) Inviting, lush, honest, beautiful track.

Innocence
Tobin, as always, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments. I hadn't
noticed that conga hit before - you're right, it might have sounded better
more centred. The ending just happened when I was recording - normally I
just fade out, but it felt right to do the "cha cha cha" finish - I'll try to sort the
ending a bit when I remix. I liked the reverb on the triangle though : ) These
sort of lyrics are very hard for me to write - the feeling's there, but it's hard
to get it into so few words - I'm glad you appreciated them.
Cheers,
Neil

First off, lovely song...
...and even if it wasn't this good, I'd be downloading it, 'cause I'm a sap
about parenthood and grandparenthood...

But, apart from the sentimental reasons for loving it... You're getting a
lovely crystalline tone on the acoustic...the treble notes are really
sparkling... The interlacing acoustic tones are superb, and nicely
supported by a well mixed bit of the jiguma bass... Your vocal has a nice
ease to it, and the doubling is really well done...

Ed
jiguma said 3980 days ago (July 2nd, 2006)
First off, lovely song...
Thanks Ed - you old softie you! I was really pleased with the sounds of the
Seagull S6 also - a combination of a new recording setup (Rode NT3 to one
track and the on-board mic to another) and new strings. Being a bass player,
the concept of "new strings" is a relatively new one - bass strings cost way
too much to go replacing them very often (but I try to do it at least once every
20 years, whether they need replacing or not), and who wants to replace the
strings on a 12 strings? I've made a decision to replace my strings every time
I do any acoustic recording, so hopefully that will help me get a consistent
sound. Although I didn't use it here, I've just been given a really nice capo
(retirement present along with a pink ukelele!) which I'm finding really helpful
in writing and playing - the capo, not the ukelele).
Thanks again for your comment Ed, always appreciate seeing you drop by.

Cheers Joseph - I do think it might have been the wine rather than the
cooking per se : ) I suspect though that it was mostly the joy at having nailed

great sound
You got such a lush and full sound here, particularly with the guitar.
Beautifully played too. It's really serene.

I'm not sure about the doubling effect on the vocals. It's not
unpleasant at all but I imagine that a really dry and clean treatment
would be more intimate. The doubling and the reverb put the vocals
off at a distance, asthetically still pleasant but contextually maybe not
as appropriate as a whisper in the ear would be. It's also possiblr that
having part of the song with the vocals as they are and other parts dry
and close would be the ticket.

It's really a lovely song and gift for your grandaughter. Excellent work.

great sound
Peter - I really appreciate you leaving a comment here. The points you make
about the vocals make sense, and I'll give them a try when I (eventually) remix
this. My voice can sound quite reverby in my "studio" even without using any,
so it might work nicely. This is one of those songs that just "fell together"
without a real lot of thought for how it might eventually sound. I'm very
pleased that you liked it.

gorgeous John Denver Country Roads setting you give to the guitar.

Singing is sweet to hear.

Like that process.

One of your best!
A moving piece, this. Well played and mixed to be sure. But I'm especially
touched by your vocal delivery of those oh-so-tender lyrics. Kudos my
friend!

Be well!

One of your best!
PS:

Please check out this tune. I went a little nuts on the bass in the mid-section,
but i think it works: http://www.macjams.com/song/22465

I also recommend Schletty's DUERME, NINO, DUERME---a beautiful piece that a
new grandpa like yourself should enjoy.

Be well friend!

Truely a keeper for her
She will cherish this for a very long time, I am sure. Don't know what I can possibly add to the comments above that would really add anything more gracious to say - it's just a great, beautiful song, a children's song, a love song - even for us big kids :-)

Thanks!

Precious...
As one grandfather to another.... just absolutely precious. Gosh... you
captured it, Neil. The awe, the wonder, the love, and the utter
amazement at this little one who has come into the world through one
of your children. God bless you, your family, and this little one.

Thanks for the comment Jack - this was a special one to write and perform
for me, and I really appreciate that it was special in some way for you.
