Description

Kind of depressing, slow. I wrote it about a girl, saying things to a guy, I wrote the lyrics over a year ago and then the music a little more then a month ago. I dont know if its about me or just an idea I came up with one day!?!?

Terrific!
Katrina you are a tone monster. You sing from the heart and it's very
moving. I like how its just you and the piano: you've exposed your vocals
and your natural gift for phrasing. The variety of sections in the piece is
refreshing: you play with not only harmonic structure but the tempo as
well. Lyrics are, yes, a bit depressing but beautiful as well. Great
songwriting.

very strong
You have a great, expressive singing voice and you really know how to
use it. The piano part is lovely too and well played. Strong songwriting.
While I think this sounds nicely recorded and mixed it has more reverb on
it than I think I'd prefer to hear. I think you could also add a little
something alse to the arrangement, layer in a bit more to let it grow
before coming down again for the end.

Your voice is incredible. The emotive power, your tone, the phrasing - it's all wonderful.

As this stands, it sounds like a really good demo. I agree with the comments above that it needs some further development. Layered with some judicious background instruments - drum track, strings, maybe even a guitar riff - and you could play this on the radio and have a hit.

Nice voice Katrina. I agree with everything said above - except
perhaps about the need for extra instrumentation - very good track
indeed. This sounds like you're using a real piano (you know, wood
and strings), and, although I haven't tried to record one, imagine it
would be quite difficult. I'd really like to hear the piano more clearly,
and maybe a good digital midi soundfont would make it easier for you
to record than using the real thing. I could of course be wrong about
the piano, in which case you probably need to tweak the sound a bit.
There is an Australian pop singer called Delta Goodrem who does
similar things to this, and although I'm not a fan, she is very good at it.
You might find it interesting to have a listen to what she does. You
might also like to listen to Missy Higgins for a different take on the
theme.
From your artist page, I see you are quite young and if this is any
indication of your talent, you have quite an interesting musical future
ahead.

I'll jump in regarding the recording side of things. It is a real piano! But
unfortunately, for recording Katrina I only had one half-decent mic and one
battle-worn radio shack mic (nothing against RS). So I used the better mic on
the voice. And because I basically recorded this live (piano and voice at the
same time) any kind of EQ'ing done on the piano track will affect the bit of voice
it caught and vice-versa. I kinda wish I had my keyboard with me at the time,
but it's a learning process to be sure.

lots of possiblilities
This works very well as a piano and voice. However, you have lots of
possibilities I hear as you get through the first "I don't care if you ever
come back" on the word come, the music is filled with drums, strings
guitar and bass. You could go in many directions. And I like the idea of
as the song progresses to revert back to the original piano and voice.
Just to provide some dynamics. (bear in mind I also think you do a
super job just as is)
I think there can be a few measures after chorus where there is a brief
musical interlude. A chance for a piano solo,such as you do at the
ending . great song!!
