Description
A fairly significant reworking of the original song posted last October - written the day we heard that our daughter was pregnant. It set off a heap of emotions which I hope are conveyed in this song. It seemed appropriate for this to be my next post.

The original suffered from less than brilliantly recorded vox (using my pre-Rode, 30 year old Shure) and a drum track that was plain awful. I think I have improved these significantly here.

This has been my most downloaded song for some time, so I thought I really should provide a new copy for those who have the old one. I'm also hoping to get it out for those who haven't heard it before.

Works best loud - thanks for listening.

Lyrics
Coastal Daze
© Neil Porter 10/10/2005

It’s just another day
In just another coastal town
It could be anywhere
But we’ve got you coming ‘round

We’ll walk down to the River Mouth
Where sapphire turns to turquoise
On the edges of the bay
We’ve got you coming over
It’s just another coastal day

The endless sets roll in
A moby dances in the bay
And Sydney’s far from here
On just another coastal day

We got your news today
We heard you buzzing on the Sydney line
Next June’s not far away
It’s as if you’d been here yesterday
And we know you’re doing fine
We’ll take you to the water’s edge
We’ll swim just like your younger days
Like we did when you lived here
And you’ll dive under the waves
And disappear

Walk around the cliff-top trail
Stop at lookouts on the way
Enjoy you being here
On yet another coastal day

We’ll walk down to the River Mouth
Where sapphire turns to turquoise
On the edges of the bay
We’ve got you coming over
It’s just another coastal day

INSTRUMENTAL

We’ll take the highway south
Head down the Teararse through the trees
There’s no-one else about
Forever empty sand and sea

And we’ll take you to the water’s edge
We’ll swim just like your younger days
Like we did when you lived here
And you’ll dive under the waves
And disappear
You surface on the other side
Laughing as you flick your hair
Wipe water from your eyes
And you say how good it feels
To be alive

Perfect summer songs
Another perfect summer song. You have such warmth and sunshine in
your tunes, even when they are sad. Just the right amount of melancholy
and hope. You can hear the life lived behind your music, thru it all.
Wonderful. Thank you for continuing to share.

Perfect summer songs
Thanks for the listen and comment Tobin. It always feels a bit like cheating
to put up a reworking of an old song, but a comment like yours makes me
realise that it's a worthwhile exrecise. I've always liked this song - it's
definitely one of my 1 or 2 favourites (of mine) - so I felt obliged to put up
the best I can do with it (although having said that while listening, I can hear
some glitches that need a fix).
I really hope your son gets through his current hand problems - it must be
really upsetting for him not to be able to play (as well as other things I'm
sure).

The Good...
just got better. You're right. The new drum track is way superior. Vox
too. Like the original, this has a nice flow. Mix seems cleaner throughout.
An accident or more tweaking? Yes, the vox is sounds cleaner and your
phrasings more certain (like you've gotten to know the song in the
interim between versions). Bass as always is sublime. Someday you're
gonna screw up Neil! But this ain't that day! LOL!

Be well friend!
jiguma said 3964 days ago (July 18th, 2006)
The Good...
Always nice to have you visit Mike. Cleaner mix is a direct result of Logic
Express - it seems much easier to see/hear those little extra unwanted noises
than in GB, and the output seems to always be, well, cleaner. The Rode mic
has also had a big impact on my vocals, and that is a significant difference
between this and the first version. Drum-wise, I can now extoll the virtues of
Drums on Demand with some confidence - it is really easy to work with and
I'm about to order a full copy.
Peace,
Neil

Logic Pro is too expensive for this po' boy. But I'll have to check out Drums On
Demand. Thanks for the tip Neil (and the great music).

Be well!

Lovely clear sound
Very nice track Neil...it reminds me a little of the late Grant McLennan
from the Go Betweens. A nice sense of wistful optimism to this
one...makes me wish I was by the sea instead of inner city London
Thanks for sharing it

Lovely clear sound
I'm humbled by the Grant McLennan comment Steve. This is a classic
example of how Logic can lift a GB song. All I really did was re-record the
vox (both tracks), re-do the drums and tidy up some noise - but then Logic
worked it's magic in increasing the "life" in all the sounds from the GB
version.
Thanks for the listen Steve.

BRAVO! Always a favorite of mine, anyway; But such a Worthy Successor!

Don't get Me Started!
Hey Coop,
EXCELLENT to see you back!!!!!!! I was wondering where you'd gotten to. I'm
really glad you liked the revamp. There was a lot of mike noise and clipping
on the vox in the original, as well as some gritty bits in the guitars which I've
managed to edit out. The switch to Logic also helped enormously to get a
more clearly defined feel to the sound. The original drums were
embarassingly "loopy", and the change to Drums On Demand (some free -
legal - samples from another site) made a big difference too.
So, yes, I'm happy with it now.

Man
That guitar sound is crisp and musical and sparkly, very nicely
complemented by the percussion grooves. Whatever awful drums you
had before (I don't remember) this is obviously a great improvement,
because it sounds perfect. There's a hypnotic feel to this, more than
your other tunes I'm thinking. Very cool.

Man
Thanks for dropping in for a listen David - as I said before, I think Logic had
a lot to do with the improvement. I hadn't mentioned my new Rode NT3 mic,
but I'm sure that helped a lot with the vox. I finally took some advice you
gave me some months ago about Drums on Demand, and used a sample set I
downloaded from another site (legally I must add). You were absolutely
correct, the DoD a)is easier to do and b) sounds better.
Cheers,
Neil

Beach in broad-minded Australia.
The beach in Australia must be quite beautiful.
Surely, it is beautiful.
Sea turtle that was born in Japan.
It swims in the Australian neighboring waters.
And, it returns to the beach in Japan for the egg laying.
Beautiful song.
Beautiful beach.

Thanks for your comments Tadashi-san. The beaches here are still beautiful,
even though it is our winter. We saw sea-turtles laying eggs on our last trip
to Queensland too - a very emotional experience.

Summer flow
Very nice and flowing arrangement. The music sounds very clear and has
good presence in the mix. Your vocals are different than I am used to so I
had to listen to it a while before I could comment, but after listening I
really like the style. It is different for me. It has that relaxed feel to it,
slightly sad mixed with longing for being somewhere (obviously near the
ocean). I enjoyed this. Good job.
jiguma said 3964 days ago (July 18th, 2006)
Summer flow
Thanks Jonathan - my voice does take a bit of getting used to (it took me 50
years!), but it seems right for what I'm writing now. The longing, if there is
one, is really to live closer to our daughter - but there's also an
acknowledgement that she needs to have her space too. We live by the sea,
and I'll always be connected (my dad was a sailor). My overwhelming sadness
at the moment is for the civilians of Lebanon.
Cheers,

Takes me there
Really beautiful music that captures the emotion that I think you were
going for. I feel like I'm in that space and it puts me in that coastal
summer frame of mind and then some, thoughtful.

Somehow I missed the original but I'm so glad I heard this new version
which sounds quite well produced. Great performance from guitar to
vocals.

My only nit is that it sounds like it got clipped off a little in the beginning,
like the guitar starts in mid-stride. Perhaps you set a marker wrong?

Takes me there
Thanks for your listen and comment Peter. It's especially nice to hear you
caught the mood I was trying to convey.
When I recorded the guitars on this I was still starting my recordings from the
"1" marker, and I often lost those opening moments - I've since modified this
technique problem. There are certainly ways of fixing this for future versions
without a complete re-record I think. Thanks for the advice - just what I
needed as I'm trying to get all of my songs up to scratch.

oh wow
Great song Neil.

It is so smooth and pleasant. Great guitars. The soloing is perfect. Very relaxed and I'm longing for a cool beer on the porch enjoying life, and of course with this song playing in the background to fulfill the mood of a beautiful day.

I think everything flows very well in here... though I'm not sure about the congas... They seems to be a bit high in the mix and also a bit uneven. If I start listening to them they kind of get in the way of the steady rhythm you've made with the guitar picking, bass and the well programmed drums:)

Beautiful tune, good composition, very well performed. Impressive guitar work!

oh wow
Thanks Thor - as usual I really appreciate your visit and comment. It's funny,
the congas are invisible to me on this. I had to listen again to hear what you
meant :) I played in a band once where congas were the only percussion (no
drums either) and must have become used to having them there I guess. It's
like any song, if you listen to one part too closely it becomes dominant in
your ears. Maybe focus on the guitar (or the drums, which I'm quite pleased
with).
Hope you're enjoying summer up there - we spent a summer in Scandinavia
many years ago and enjoyed it a lot.

You harmonize so well. Maybe becuase I like your voice I feel I'm

blending in such a seamless way. The guitar work is excellent, as well
the tech aspects of the recording...very well done. The solo section is
just sooooo laid back & mellow. I can feel the sting of salt in my eyes.

Cool summer song
This has the perfect translation of what a good summer is like. Something
like what it would be here in Texas if it cooled down a bit.....

Nice song, though a bit long for me, and although your vocals are
perfectly sung, I'd lower them a bit: I like to hear the instruments a bit
more. But that's nitpicking.

Cool summer song
Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment Vic. We're mid-winter now,
although it has been quite warm - not as hot as you describe of course.
One thing I haven't been able to get over in song writing is length - I just
tend to write long songs. This is partly because I have trouble getting in all
the words I want as well as a solo of some sort - I also like to round songs off
with a reference back to the start. I suspect I'm kind of stuck with that.
I'll have to pass on your comment about the vocals to snowdragon - when I
started here he was constantly urging me to "boost the vox" - maybe I can
back off on the vox now : )
Cheers,

you are fast becoming one of my favorites here at MJ... I really dig the
songs you are putting out. You capture something in your songs (this
