Lyrics
QUEEN OF HEARTS

Cut the cards and deal me in;
this joker’s gonna play to win.
Play my hand and my heart in love’s new game.
A diamond sparkles in your eye,
telling me the stakes are high,
but to win your love is my one and only aim.

So, I’m betting everything I’ve got from the start.
‘Cause this time I’m holding the Queen of Hearts.

I’m not a master at this game;
I’ve lost more love than I have gained.
But this time I won’t leave anything to chance.
There’s an ace hidden up my sleeve
but don’t fold, give your hand to me.
You can loose your heart and still win at romance.

So, I’m betting everything I’ve got from the start.
‘Cause this time I’m holding the Queen of Hearts.

Lady, I’ve been looking such a long, long time for you
but before you were never in my cards.
They were always stacked against me
but it seems my luck has changed
for, this time, I’m holding the Queen of Hearts.

So, I’m betting everything I’ve got from the start.
‘Cause this time I’m holding the Queen of Hearts.

Hi, JT.
I think your particular strength with this song is the lyric. Very well
structured, and a nicely worked out love-as-card-game metaphor. I like
what I'm hearing as a distort-o-phonic guitar against the pleasantly
cheesy synth. You seem to be getting this comparison a lot, but I hear
echoes of Neil Young's Trans...'Transformer Man', maybe... And your vocal
style seems to have something of Neil's phrasing. If I was going to make a
suggestion it might only be in terms of loosening up and widening the
melody. That would be my taste, anyway. Nice graphic, too. Off to check
some of your other stuff... Ed

Thanks,Ed
Thanks for your comments--esp about the lyrics. That synth-sound you're
hearing is GB's "New Surf Lead" in their guitar section--not quite a guitar sound
I guess. And I swear the Neil Young sounding vocal isn't intentional. I like some
of his songs (esp the early stuff) but I don't consider myself a big fan. My
singing just comes out that way--maybe, it's from being raised in Nashville.
Anyway, thanks again for listening and for the comments.

Yep
Cool voice shifting! You sound like an authentic Country-Folk-Rock
star. How you gonna do this live? Synth keyboard gets to be a bit
much. I'd pull back on that a bit or at least soften the shrillness.
Overall, I like the song construction. Good lyrics.

Thanks, Richard
Well, unlike you, I don't do live shows. So, the voice shifting won't present a
problem. It sure gave the song a different "personality" than my own voice
would have, however. I'll think about reworking the synth guitar you mentioned.
Many thanks for listening and for your comments.

rock on
sounds sorta like the Residents or ArthurBrown, very tripy 60's acid folk/rock.

Hey JT!
I like this. A psyche-folk-rock feel. Cool vocals. Interesting synth work (a little Doors-ish in places). Real nice work.

Be well!

Hey Amagi
Thanks so much. I really appreciate the comments. Yeah I didn't have the Doors in mind but the synth does give it a Doors flavor in a couple spots, doesn't it? Thanks for listening and commenting.

Good to hear from you again
Middle ages, really? To me it has a touch of the early 1970s. I never thought about the early 1370s. :-) Seriously, thanks so much for listening and for your comments.

Open the Doors
I'm getting the Doors feel too. With the guitar riffing going on it takes on a psychedelic feel.

Yor voice seems darker coloured too compared to the your more recent work. I like this tone more. More confident.

Hey, Roy
Glad you enjoyed this. Yeah, I did a bit of a trick with my voice on this one. I recorded the guitar track, then raised its pitch by two notes in GB and sang along until I had an acceptable vocal. Then I dropped the guitar track to its original key and then lowered the vocal by two notes. It transformed my voice considerably, giving it a deeper resonance.

As long as you don't go past two or three notes either up or down (otherwise, it sounds weridly mechanical) it can give you a whole different vocal. Try it.

Working outside the box again. It paid off.
