Rage

Description
I came across this song by Darksun48 and fell in Love with it (http://www.macjams.com/song/24057) originally called UNSAID. I was looking for something to RAWK on (versus most of my weird crooning stuff I have been posting lately) and this one just HIT ME. My version is called "RAGE". As usual, I had some mixing issues trying to get the vocals not to sound so loud without losing the integrity of the grittiness of the sound I was going for ... but I think they might still be peaking somewhat into the dangerous RED ZONE now and again - but I wanted to post it anyway to see what you all thought. Darksun48 has not heard my version yet.

Lyrics
I feel a little knot of fear
Deep inside my chest
Slowly growing larger
When I stop to rest

Time to think of all the things
Time to turn the page
Bring them to the surface
Turn this fear to rage

I want someone to prop me up
No one wants the job
Everyone is hurting
One big angry mob

I get in my car and I drive
No solace there
People shouting – tires screeching
Horns begin to blare

Maybe at the checkout stand
There’s a girl who looks nice
What a bitch – I hate her guts
Her voice is full of ice

What a joke
I hate my life
I wanna turn this fear to rage
Turn this fear to rage

Maybe I’ll have a drink
And then I won’t care
Whether or not I look good
Or what to do with my hair

Turn this fear to rage
Turn this fear to rage
It’s easier to hate myself
It’s easier to feel rage

I must behave myself
I must be careful
Or they’ll put me in a cage
If I don’t control my fear
By letting it turn into rage
Oh wanting to explode from me
The battle I must wage
Don’t turn this fear to rage

v. nice
great take on our song....you've got a lot of emotion in your
vocals....it's interesting, we didn't really write this one with any vocals
in mind necessarily, but they definitely fit in very well.

let us know if you'd like to collaborate on any of our other music....
namely our song called "each moment of silence will pull us further
apart" ..... we are looking for some really emotional vocals to pull that
song together, to really drive home that emotion we are trying to get
across.....something very ambient, without a focus on the actual
words.... the best way we can put it is vocals as another instrument
rather than traditional vocals. we'd like to hear your personal take on
it.

if you think you're up for the job, let us know. we'd love the
collaboration.....as this is a collaborative art. darksun48@yahoo.com,
or aim darksun48.

feel free to lyricize any of our other music as well.

thanks again, keep rockin

Actually ...
I have already downloaded all the songs you have posted so far ... heh heh ... and I originally thought about playing around with the one you mentioned .. and then the MOOD of this one just sort of HIT ME and I couldn't stay away from it! I'll put some thought into the "moment of silence" ... I think I had some ideas over the last weekend but I need to listen to it again and remind myself. I tried to add you to my AIM list but for some reason it thinks there are thousands of you ... and the only way I can add you is if you are online and I manage to IM you during that time .... I'm glad you like this song tho ... always a worry (risk) when one "dances" on someone elses stuff and throws their own interpretation on it.

Emotional..
..with edge. Vocals are done and mixed pretty good, and really enjoyable
on the mood. Evokes exactly what you probably wanted it to! Good job.
Alannah said 1137 days ago (October 17th, 2006)
Thanks for the comments JS ...
.. yes that "edge" thing .. someone asked me earlier how many cigarettes I had to smoke to get that rasp in my voice !!! No cigarettes were harmed in the making of this song.

Spot on!
Loved the slow building music by Darksun48 and sung very well Alannah.
Hints of Joplin in there. Well done both of you.

Alannah said 1137 days ago (October 17th, 2006)
Yes ...
I heard a lot of similar elements on this song that I hear on some of your stuff too Bad Smells ... which is probably why I liked it the minute I heard it ... (little secret I only listened to it once and just started to record hoping my adlibs didn't show too much) .... and I think I wrote in a forum post recently that I was going for the "Janice" sound on my next one .. heh heh

The very best I've heard from you so far, Alannah. This is singing from very deep inside. I love every decibel that's coming out of your throat in this song. A vibrato that makes me so jealous. - Walter

Lady Sings the Rock
Powerful stuff. You picked an excellent backing track. It stands well
on it's own and you compliment it with your vocals perfectly. Excellent
performance. I like the doubling vocal with the heavy reverb and the
way you start some lines over the previous ones. Poignant lyrics with a
heart breaking twist at the end. Don't hate yourself, please, and do
keep up the good fight. I for one would like to hear more of your rage.
Interesting artwork too. Question: It sounds like you've got a real good
handle on recording your vocals but I was wondering if you use
compression at all? If not, you might want to try it. It might take a bit
of the dynamic out of your delivery but it'll keep you from overdriving
the recording allowing the whole track to come up more. Just a
thought. Overall, loved it. Listening again now... that last verse is a
killer.

Alannah said 1134 days ago (October 19th, 2006)
You know ....
I have heard about "compression" before .. but I still have NO IDEA of what it is or how to do it .... work it .... find it ???? I gotta start reading the HOW TO forums more now that I have SOME idea ... time for me to branch a little more into the MIXING end of things .. I tend to use the same tired old pre-sets on all my recordings ... I'm AFRAID of most of them ! Thanks for the commentos !

Nice!
I love that gritty emotional tone. I don't find the mixing to really be a
problem except for one or two sections. Great job and great work!
Check out my latest song called Giving Up (Instrumental)
Alannah said 1134 days ago (October 19th, 2006)
Yes ...
I know EXACTLY which sections you are talking about Bran ... problem is .. I don't hear them during the mixing process .. or it sounds OK through the headphones .. then I get all excited to POST IT .. and I do .. and then MUCH later I drop a copy onto the MP3 player .. or burn a CD and listen in the CAR and there is where I hear all the MISTAKES .... (not to mention the bad singing parts too ... ack) ... I need to TEST RUN these things more before I post .. I am just like a KID that way .. can't wait to get it posted ... WARTS AND ALL !!!!! Thanks for the listen !

I love it!!! Super dark lyrics and major power on your delivery - Very, very cool! Your band is very hot behind you and the drums are remarkable.
Check out my latest song called It's For You w/Mystery Lady
Alannah said 1134 days ago (October 19th, 2006)
Absolutely ...
.. the band behind this one is fabulous !! I tend to be quite picky about the backing track I choose to sing all over .. unfortunately I am NOT as picky with my own performance ... as I stated above .. I should REALLY try a little harder to do the MUSIC JUSTICE by taking more time with my performance .. iron out the flat notes ... clean up the mix a bit BEFORE I post it .... because usually I listen and always think to myself ... I can do SO MUCH better than THAT VOCALLY .. what is the MATTER with me ??? Why am I so anxious to post these tunes so fast without fixing the mistakes? Well hopefully Macjams is a learning PLACE and I will eventually post truly WORTHY vocals on the great stuff I keep HOPPING ON !

Great Grit
Excellent sounding vocals you have there with a thick and moody accompanying track behind you. I like it a lot.

As for rushing to get songs posted, I do the same thing. One could say that we should polish the heck out of our work before handing it off to the masses, but my approach has always been, once it's created, release it and move on to the next creative effort.

I guess one of these days I'll try polishing something up if I'm really proud of it and have the motivation for it. Until then, all that engineering time could be better spent creating new stuff!

Alannah said 1087 days ago (December 5th, 2006)
Thanks Pete ..
... I almost missed this note because it somehow got pushed up higher in the message list. But I admit I have never gone back and re-worked or polished anything ... I take the comments on any given song and try to apply them to the next song and hope I do better next time around ... I'm always afraid that if I did re-do it ... people would pop by and just think ... OH I heard this one already and move on ... thanks for the comments!

Alannah said 1132 days ago (October 21st, 2006)
Yes .. I've always been a bit of an oddball of sorts ....
... my lyrics are inspired by just about everything and everyone around me ... sometimes I hear someone's story or I see something and I just feel compelled to write something about it ... some of my songs were actually written some time ago in the form of poems .. and I have tried to adapt them to music .... the lyrics to this particular song stemmed from a friend of mine a few years ago who was going through a divorce ... her fear of being alone turned her into a RAGING lunatic ... and she pretty much hated everything and everyone and whatever she tried to do to make herself happy just ended up pissing her off .... I was reminded of the fact that a lot of anger really stems from fear .... (p.s. last I heard she got back together with her husband and I haven't seen or heard from them in eons) .. hahahaha

well done, evocative!
I can really feel the tightness of the chest turning into anger... good lyrics, great emotional singing, great choice of backdrop! The usual dripping reverb, but only here and there in chorus, you're getting good! Brava...

Thanks Drakonis ....
.... it just would NOT be an Alannah song without my trusty dusty reverb .... I am using just as much as I usually use ... but I think what people are mistaking for Reverb on a lot of my songs is actually the ECHO feature which I sometimes also add .... and I am getting better at LOSING the Echo function when attempting to mix my vocals in to a tune ....

amazing vocals
...so pure and powerful. your singing makes me "feel". that is the object of most music... mission accomplished!
Alannah said 983 days ago (March 19th, 2007)
Thanks ....
.. Most of my lyrics have a "deeper" aspect to them .... I tend to write about life's emotions and perhaps to a certain degree the "darker side of life" .... regardless of the genre ... you can pretty much find a lot of bleak stuff on my page (hahahaha) BUT I am not a dark or bleak person ... I just like to make songs about it.

Great vocal tone`
This song sounds like a mix of Janis Joplin & Stevie Nicks. This song would be better if there was less reverb on the intruments. Your voice gets drowned out by all the reverb. I think that is why you couldnt get the sound right. I have struggled with my old mixes with the same thing.
Alannah said 110 days ago (August 8th, 2009)
OK ... here's the thing ....
... I don't have the "original instruments" ... the tune was done by Darksun48 and bascially I recorded over a completed MP3 .... so in that respect I was unable to do anything with the music itself .... my only tinkerings had to do with the vocals which I added ....
