Description
Loop It Or Lose It

After many false starts and sidetracks, I ended up slowing the loop down to 60bpm and building a chord with it. Then I piled on distortion etc. to create more of a textured effect inspired by my love of My Bloody Valentine. This resulted in a noisy organic bed which I layered on itself using the number 11 as a rhythmic device. Tracks were introduced or phased on an eleven beat cycle which set up a breathing feel. Most of the other loops used were from the TUMI loops offered here last year. After making a big mess - I added two tracks of live melodica, and one track of triggered strings, in addition to thunder, rain, and wind sound effects.

The results of that endeavor were posted here as Tectonica. Some of you folks made good suggestions and I went back to the mix - creating more space and development - which became d r i f t.

I wanna thank CHIKOPPI for setting this thing up and EGOBANDIT for lighting the fuse with “What’s all the fuss about loops?”. I look forward to hearing everyone’s entries.

- Bud

raptors
we're wading through the organic morass of a prehistoric jungle and although I'm worried about raptors, I'm totally immune to fear cuz i've got this playing on my ipod. what a friggin great idea to slow this down and pepper it with the all the nuanced orchestration. very cinematic, very cool track

red shift...
Right after DoofyHyperMode, this is a very different take! I'm very impressed, after hearing your prior version of this, that you found a beautiful way to work the loop in and make it sound like it belonged all along! I would have given it another bar or two and started it in much softer, it seemed to suddenly appear though... maybe that's 'cause I was looking for it, however. This is definitely film music, and now you have me waiting to find out if they ever did get to this misty valley in Borneo and find the orchid? When does your film come out? :-)

Thanks ...
for your comments now and on the earlier version. I fought the desire to stretch this piece out a little more so I could keep it as short as possible and still render the effect - realizing how many of these entries we'd all be listening to.

Super-Duper-looper
I love what you did with this!!!! Spooooky wet tropical environment, and evidence of that loop disguised in a mask of suspense. Nice work!

Memories of a dream I haven't yet had
Fantastic opening - instantly creates a portentious and dreary mood. The loop sounds so alien and unnatural with your treatment - very unsettling! The instruments you pair it with compliment the strange reed/chime tonality of the altered loop. Harmonica, bells, plucked strings, and more that all blend together in a complex and sinuous melody.

The cymbal washes are a nice touch. They seem to make the whole mix shimmer with a spray of shattered rain drops. The percussive details are all very tasteful, just enough to provide texture, momentum, and accent.

An inescapable sense of mood and place. Vivid! Thanks for putting so much work into painting this scene - it pays off huge!

love em or mutilate them I say. To be honest a loop can become so many things and with this song you proved that. Keep it going Bud. love this

This is one of my favorites in the challenge
and it's heaviness reminds me of the Swans. Love the powerful bottom end and the melodic cacaphony going on on top of it all.

Lush
Boy it's so humid... that picture is just right. The heat and the heaviness are great... modulated by chirping and noisy insects. It leads into a hot summer night with fireflies. Very nice.

I was afraid the mix was getting too muddy - but I really am drawn to a certain amount of lo-fi noise and confusion. This was a fun project.

Holy Soundtracks!!!
Man, this is great! That loop sounds eerie at 60bpm, and also very slick!

Love the overall mix, and there's that low (almost subsonic) bass hit in there that sounds sweet. Very cool!

Low end stuff is tricky
Glad it worked for you. I have to trust my headphones - my computer speakers can't hack them. I really liked Sliced - good work.

Good grief!!!
Way to loop Bud! I was going to attempt a contest entry, but from what i've heard so far from yourself, mikey-d, PerceptualVortex and others---I'm seriously out-gunned. Think I'll sit this dance out. Amazing work herein. My clothing is all damp now from stumbling blindly through this dense sonic mist. DRIFT---the absolute perfect title...

Be well Bud!

Ya know - loops can be scary
I slowed MRG11 down a lot and it turned sinister on me. Then when I transposed and layered it, it got downright scary to my ears. Then I let it take over and guide all my decisions - creating the piece it wanted for LOILI. Follow your loop - but be careful.
