Description
In response to datafunk's addition to the 5 minute challenge. I turned off the sound and dropped some loops into GB based only on their names. eg southern piano 3.

The complete 5 minutes were sent looking at loops, dropping them in and stretching them to the length of the song. I didn't hear it until just before it was exported to itunes.

After hearing it, I think it could have been worse.

It works for novices
Thanks for the comment.

Even though I have used GB for more than a year, I still consider myself an amateur.

This concept might actually work better for GB veterans who may have used the loops enough to know what rock beat 4 sounds like, but for me, I had no idea what was going to come out of it. Of course, for the really good jammers, they can create their own loops that make GB much more stunning, and the music much more amazing.

Still it's fun to create and share with others.

easy to use, hard to master
Actually, I find the program fairly easy to use, as far as putting loops together and loop them or edit them.

However, I don't recognize many loops without listening. It also depends where I am using it. At home I bought the first 4 loop packs, so I have lots of variety. Too much when looking for something, sometimes. At school, we have the basic package, and I find the same ones keep turning up.

But as I said, the more musically inclined can record their own stuff and go to town with it.

I did buy a USB midi, to get my wife's clavinova connected, and add more freedom.

Cool concept!
Taking the 5 minute challenge further by not even auditioning the loops is something akin to a John Cage chance music composition. I think he would be amused.

However, even without listening to the loops during the process of composition, you can still easily employ some fairly basic composition techniques visually (and these are common to any art--not just music).

Contrast: Have a section with many layers of loops, and then a section with one or none. It would be like an A section followed by a B section.

Repetition: Take your two contrasting sections and repeat them a few times. This would be like A|B|A|B

Form: Just taking the last concept a bit further. Follow a basic form like A|B|A|B|C|B, where C is like a bridge section. Now, good luck getting that done in 5 minutes!

There are probably a few more ways to be randomly structural (is that an oxymoron?). But this would be a start.

Hope this helps your creative endeavours!

Thanks for the comments
I may add my own criticism in that just using the GB loops, many regular macjammers are probably hearing the "common" loops "again!". I did loop my own finger snapping and clapping, but that's not very original.

: ) : ) NO!!!!!
This is way too short lol I LOVE IT (!!) Thanx man been wondering who You are with Your funny picture : )
stooey said 1088 days ago (March 28th, 2007)
Thanks
Part of the reason for the shortness of the song is the fact that it was created as part of the 5 minute challenge. If you want some more info about search the forum archves, or listen to episode 1 (My sample podcast) I used the challenge as a theme.

The other reason it was short is that since I wasn't going to listen to it until I published it to itunes, I didn't want it too long in case it really sucked.

As for the picture, it was taken while I was DJing a dance. I can't sit still while music is playing so I started doing little airbands to some songs, which of course led to simple costumes,....

i love that
you did this without auditioning the tracks. that is so cool, and I wish i had thought of it first. next time, you need to post it and then never listen to it. i mean never. it would be an incredible thing to do a complete record of tunes that you performed and released and had no idea how they sounded. are you strong enough to resist the allure of your own music?

You mean never, ever listen?
I think at some point I would have to hear it out of curiosity.

However, my primary reason was to show the versatility of GB and how it can make any schep (me) be able to make music.

thanks for listening.
