Have A Merry Christmas

Description
What kind of Xmas song do you write when you've had the worst year of your life? This kind. :)

It's not a feel good holiday song, but there's some hope there. I'm not trying to be a Grinch here, but, when life has really sucked for a long time, you don't necessarily feel like celebrating the holidays, even though you might actually want to. You kind of feel on the outside looking in.

So if you've had your fill of holiday cheer, give it a listen.

Lyrics
Have A Merry Christmas
©2006 Joseph Gurner

I sat down to write a Christmas song
but I didn’t have much to say

Joy to the world and peace on earth
is all old hat to me

With the year I’ve had you may think I’m mad
I don’t want to celebrate

It won’t be much fun cause I’ve been under the gun
since early New Year’s day

So go on and have a Merry Christmas
and maybe I’ll join on in
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye
and I’m just looking for a friend

I’m hoping for a Happy New Year
to be honest it can’t get much worse

But at least I’m alive and I still have my drive
and I’m looking to take what life gives

So go on and have a Merry Christmas
and maybe I’ll join on in
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye
and I’m just looking for a friend

I really do hope the best for you all
and I hope for joy and cheer

I’ll just give you this sign that it’s gonna be fine
and this story will be told

So go on and have a Merry Christmas
and maybe I’ll join on in
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye
and I’m just looking for a friend

So go on and have a Merry Christmas (I can’t sing happy holidays)
and maybe I’ll join on in (at least not this time around)
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye (give it a year and I’ll look for that cheer)
and I’m just looking for a friend (next time it comes around)

So go on and have a Merry Christmas (I can’t sing happy holidays)
and maybe I’ll join on in (at least not this time around)
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye (give it a year and I’ll look for that cheer)
and I’m just looking for a friend (next time it comes around)

Tidings, of Some Cheer
Here's to writing a Song.

Apprehensive, or not, giving It The Go, Brother.

A Peace-Filled Christmas and Best of the New Year. (I recommend the Eggnog, if you come by This way, Brother.)

Very Best to You,

Is there a little taste of bourbon in the egg nog?
Thanks for your support, my friend. It really is appreciated.

Thanks for the sign!
Joseph - I hope writing this is a good lead up to the new year for you - I feel some new year's resolutions in the air for you. Listening to this has made me realise that we are all really lucky to have our musical outlet when we're not feeling the best and when the world treats us poorly.
Now for the song itself: the bells at the end were just perfect "tears to the eyes" material for a start. I got a George Harrison vibe throughout, and really liked the sounds you were getting on the guitar - even the anguished solo, which said so much. Your voice is better here than I've heard you sing before, and the production is great - clear and crisp and well mixed. No nits!
Congratulations, and all the best for Xmas and the new year. Take care,
Neil

Nothing like a fresh start
I have found that there's no better therapy than making music. Added with the support I've gotten from my friends here at MJ, it's really made a big difference to me.

You know, I would have never thought about the George Harrison vibe, but it's a good one to have. Nothing like a little Dark Horse influence. I really appreciate you comments, Neil, and your support. And I hope you have a great holiday season. (It's the time of the year to spoil that granddaughter, BTW. )

What Coop said!
Happy NEW Year and happy Winter Solstice. I hope this song was cleansing for you and is something you'll be following up next year with a song all about the best year of your life.

I agree with Neil, this is one of your best vocals ever, just the right amount of attitude and emotion and the bells at the end are a stroke of genius. This is going on my Christmas mix tape, for sure.

The best is yet to come
I've cleaned out a lot of cobwebs and am ready for all the good things that I know are coming down the pike. It's fitting at this time of year to toss out the old and get ready for the new and that's exactly what this tune is helping me do.

I appreciate you listening, Lisa, and for your support. It's greatly appreciated.

I hope
2007 is more enjoyable for you, Joseph.
I'm viewing 2006 as a series of 'experiences to learn from' myself.

May 2007 be better for us all
And may we all benefit from our "learning experiences." I hope you have a great holiday season, Bill. Thanks for listening.

Hey mister prolific...
fYou have such a cool spirit dude - I'm gonna be like you when I grow up - I know I am...

And you get the award for being the most creative macjammer ever.

I'm thinking that I especially like your vox on this one - It's very different and you sound very comfortable - Nice delivery - And again, nice words -- Glad to know that you're keeping yer head up --

You're a good inspiration -- Another good one JG! REALLY -- Thanks for sharing this. D

Hi JG,
Here's wishing for a Happy New Year, and that the 'learning experiences' are a bit more gentle on you in 2007. (Hey, if you were a football team, you could call 2006 a 'rebuilding year'). There are so many Christmas songs that deny these tough times, I love the way you express your emotions, but also acknowledge that you continue to be optimistic. Really good songwriting!
