Lyrics
SMILE

I'm so sick of seeing you under your parents roof,
Oh when, will you, move out?
You said pretty soon about a month ago,
But you, I know will be more,

But what they do has no barings on you,
Or what I'm thinking too,
Cause your affections pulls me in the direction to their door,
Well, watch me do it more.

When I stay at night we sleep in separate rooms
While I dream of you by my side,
Your Dad always gives me the third degree,
Says he'll break my knees if I stray,

But what they do has no barings on you,
Or what I'm dreaming too,
Cause your affections pulls me in the direction to their door,
Well, watch me do it more.

If you come and live, with me one day I'll make you smile and there's no denial
If you come and stay with me one day I'll make you smile, that's a promise not a lie

But what they do has no barings on you,
Or what I'm feeling too,
Cause your affections pulls me in the direction to your door,
Well, watch me do it more.

na na na na etc

No more talking on the phone or dropping round when I'm aloud (x2)

Hey 1 a.m.
Wow - crazy or what!! I was just commenting on your daughters track and then checked my profile and you commented on my new track! Crazy - we were commenting at the same time!

Anywho - thanks for the comment and vote - I would surely be up for you to do a video of this tune if you want! What kind of video are you thinking - whats in your head?? It would be a first for me to have a video done for any of my tunes and flattered that the song has led you thinking that way! Let me know what kind of thing you have in mind!

The festival I am applying for is the North by North West in Canada <http://www.nxne.com/>. I have mates living in Canada and something like this would be a great excuse to visit. Not getting my hopes up as the competition is probably mostly professional but if you're not in you cant win!

Thanks again for the wonderful comment!

brilliant pop tune
I like the very straightforward beat of the drums. The song starts of as a lo-fi track, but mutates quickly into a radio-ready sound. Nice surprise. Cleverly structured all the way, nice vocals and a splendid bridge somewhere at 3/4 of the song. Not the slightest quibble from my side. Just a big bravo!

Thanks
Hey Walter!

Thanks very much for the comment. Glad you liked the intro - thought it would be a nice introduction. I do like the bridge too - took me awhile to get it to where I wanted and I'm glad it works in your ears too!

Thanks!

good luck
with getting the gig. if it were up to me, you'd headline. this is just a great straight up pop/rock tune. master songwriting to me. the lyrics, melody and the production match the inspired performance. hooks till you pass out. love this

I Wish!
I wouldnt mind headlining anything! Thats a distant reality to do something like that. If I even get to go I'll over the moon. Thing is if I get to go I'll be playing on my own (acoustically) so I cant reproduce a tune like this as it is. Maybe if things happen I could try get some Canadian macjammers to join me on stage! Who knows!

Thanks for your comment - much appreciated!

smilin"
a great retro '60's /early 70's so cal rock style. very fresh sound a nd mix. cool guitar hook like some early beatle tunes, and the bridge had a jackson browne/eagle kind of thing going. if you get the gig there is no doubt in my mind the crowd will be bouncing right along there with you. good luck!

Can't believe I haven't visited your song page before
Beautiful work here! You have an excellent and way more than a listenable singing voice - It's quite musical and pleasing to listen to - I don't know what I expected, but I'm impressed beyond all fitting words.

Outstanding piece! Great writing, singing, and playing

And so why aren't you signed...

Thanks for sharing - D

Great Gav
Great playing and production, and some lovely vocals (bet I'm not the first to comment on the touch of the Bono in your voice, laddie, but it's only just there).

This is a little pop gem (a little crowded house, but mostly just sounds like you). The lyric is great, how it must be to be young and in love! This sounds complete to me gav, good structure and length - best of luck.

Thanks Steve
Bono - whos he??

I think its a good comparison. People say I'm a bit Eddie Vedder too but I suppose everyone can be linked to some artist in some way.

Funny you say 'how it must be to be young and in love!'. The lyric was inspired by a couple I know where they both moved home again for a time to save money for their house. They were in their 30's at the time and the GF's parents were wrecking his head everytime he visited and was quite eager to get back living together again. Though I was aware that the specifics are not penned, I like the fact that the first thing that comes to mind is young love as they both seemed to be propelled back to being treated like teenagers in a way.

Thanks for the comment steve and glad you liked the tune!

Even better
You know, i could blather on for ever about interpretation of lyrics (just look at some of my comments), but I really liked the lyrics when I listened to the track, and i like them even more now that you've told my what they are actually about.

thanks Gav

: ) - makes me smile
Good luck with the festival gig. This is a good song, well performed. Sets up a very nice vibe - "mood and pictures" for sure. Restrained guitars and tight bass and drums work well for me.

You'll get the gig!
I think you'll get the gig--the song is tasteful, tuneful, hummable (sticks in the head) and well produced. It goes on a bit long--not sure where you can cut, but it feels a bit too long...

Thanks for your ears
Thanks Jim. Funny you say you feel the song is a bit long. I had an extra verse in it until recently and the tune was nearly 6 minutes. It is still long but I like what I left too much to cut any more. If it ever did get on radio though I would have to agree with you and chop some more - a small sacrifice should it ever get on the airwaves!

Plain and Simple
.. It just plain works! You could sell this one to John Mayer for sure. You got the pop thing down. Would work great in one of that teen movie genre like "Sweet 16", or
be the ghost writer for some up coming band that all the girls swoon over the lead vocalist. I like it.

Thanks for the comment! It's surely the most poppy thing I have done. Why be a ghost writer when I can have all the girls swoon over ME? But then again..... they do anyway ;) (I wish... sniff)

I like it!
Hey you have something here. This is a very tight radio type of song. I think that you could sell this to the pretenders and it would sound like they wrote it. I hope you take that as a compliment. Though you definately have an original delivery, you have the formula right as well. I also liked the mic placement for the acoustig guitar around the bridge. It may be a cleaverly place verb...Dont know for sure but it sounded just great with that slide panning to the right. Its a beaut! Its on the favs. Take care.

Thanks for the comment. The pretenders are cool - that IS a compliment! The guitar sound is reverb and I suppose mic placement had something to do with it! Thanks again for listening!

Saw your video...
Hi there, Gav. After watching your video in the forum, I had to visit your profile. I listened to "Smile" here and was blown away! This is definitely radio-ready, and I mean that as a compliment. It's a very solid tune, something you might hear in a movie soundtrack or a TV show. You have a great voice. Wonderful job all around, I'm sure you get that gig you mentioned in the description.

Wonderful!
I first heard this a few minutes ago in your Balconytv.com performance which I loved. So, I came over here to here you full version.

This is fantastic. So beautifully arranged and some very nice uses of effects in places to give it these great moments like the reverb you use on the drums and guitar at the start, putting them off in a room and then bringing it all in close and tight. Actually, the acoustic guitar sounds like it remains in that space; I think I'd rather hear it come in close and relatively dry like the rest, only dropping back into the roomy sound again later in that part towards the end where it is somewhat alone. I like how that roomy sound makes it feel like we're entering another space, like we're poking our head into the room. But I'd like to hear that roomy sound only in a couple select sections.

That's the only critical thing I can think of. Well, maybe I'd try a little less reverb on the vocals or perhaps a shorter reverb. One of those things I'd try just to see if I like it better that way or the original way, just to try it out.

Really, this is such a wonderful song. I love the lyrics and the melodies, the very heart of the song. That's why it was still wonderful performed simply on the balcony and with the street noise.

Definitely one of the very best songs I've heard on MJ.

Thanks for your detailed feedback Peter. Your suggestions sound good and I'll give them a go! I haven't listened to it for a while so I can take your suggestions on board more objectively - tweaking the reverb is something I should do. Thanks so much for listening and commenting!

Goes to show how effective forum threads are. This is a great song, I hear slight traces of Declan O'Ruarke. You have a nice resonance in your voice. This song is very radio friendly. And would leave most of the mush we're forced to listen to on public radio for dead. Excellent song man, keep them coming.
