Description
The second collaboration with my brother Will. I had to get this out today, I'd like to think I'll be singing a different song this time next year. Will sent the lyrics and I laid this down in one session - hence the rough edges and slipping tempos - but that's life.
Peace to us all in the year to come.

Lyrics
There’s a woman in the picture
her cheeks are stained with tears
There’s a man in a uniform
who’s confirmed her darkest fears.
Her features are contorted
her mouth it howls with pain
Her anguish is unbearable
but her anguish is in vain

(chorus)
We fill the air with bullets
we fill the air with bombs
we forget about the mothers
mothers with empty arms

She’ll never see her son again
her son just three years old
He died in the bombing
his mother’s just been told.
There’s a soldier in the picture
whose clothes are stained with blood
There’s a medic right beside him
but he can’t stop the flood

(chorus)

The medic’s face is empty
it’s drained by shock and awe
The medic’s face is empty
it’s drained by shock and awe
He’ll say a prayer and cry tonight
he’s seen it all before
He’ll say a prayer and cry tonight
he’s seen it all before

(chorus)

The soldier has a mother
she’s just heard the news
The soldier has a mother
she’s just heard the news
Her son’s been killed in Baghdad
She’s got the Baghdad blues.
Her son’s been killed in Baghdad
She’s got the Baghdad blues

(chorus)

i hope you were wearing leather pants
when you recorded this mr. morrison. this is, in my mind, the definative lost doors track. any "rough edges serve it well.

Excellent!
I KNEW Jim Morrison wasn't really dead!!! LOL! On a more serious note guys...this is an excellent piece of social commentary. Food for thought as we embark on another year...of what I wonder? More blood and tears? Bless the both of you for this one! You say it and play it like you mean it! And I shout AMEN.

Be well!

Bud, you just keep 'em coming ... this has a fabulaous druggy/draggy feel to it - I love the rough edges. How long must we sing this song, indeed?

I think ...
..... my feelings on this topic are pretty well known, and you've done a great job with this song - lyrics are hard hitting and obviously heartfelt. Great sound you get! The similarities with JM are a little uncanny. What a huge disaster our leaders have created - on a bad day I think that we've hardly seen the beginning of this nightmare. On a good day I see a change coming.
Peace,
Neil

nicely done
This has quite a unique sound to it, a lazy weariness that really fits. The lyrics tell a powerful tale. It's got a good hook and I think it builds to a great climax, particularly in how you raise the energy on the vocals in the last chorus as it repeats. Thanks for making it.

Again - thanks for your comments
The Lizard King comparisons are gonna go to my head - I was aiming for Beck mixed with Barry McGuire.
The fun thing about this process is doing it as fast as possible to keep the immediacy of a live event. Again I read the lyrics while improvising on rhythm guitar over a basic beat. Then I sang and finished the other tracks right away with little or no futzing. My family prefers this style of recording too.

Groovie
Wish there where more songs like this, with important and needed message. This is a very good blues, sure some Jim in here, but it also has the Beck-vibe!? Well, it has the BUD-vibe. Awesome guitars, almost drone, heavy, awesome vocals! A clear download. Peace/Mikki

Nice lead tone
I like the tone you get on the lead guitar.

Seems more of a rock tune to me than a traditional blues.

slide
hey bud,
love the slide acoustic that sounds like it's being played with a dull knife. lush lead- soft and sustained. this is a seriously moody track that doesn't get sucked into becoming maudlin. Current political topic songs can be dangerous that way. good job. I got a couple 911 songs that are only now safe to see the light of day... not so with this cut.

Thanks for the dull knife image
I like it. It's interesting working with Will's lyrics - the fact that they're not mine makes me less self conscious when singing them. He tells it like it is and I get to deliver the news.

Good ears - Beck was the model...
starting with the sloppy slide guitar. I see you're new to MJ - welcome and have fun. Thanks for commenting.

poignant...
... I guess I can't also help but mention a 'Lizard King/Unknown Soldier' revisitation! Perhaps a bit of Palace Brothers (heh, heh...)

The mix is terrific & the instrumentation is a great example of how simplicity can be so effective...
Great stuff!

Raw
A sound as raw as the wounds of war, which perfectly underscores the theme of the lyrics. That slide guitar bleeds its notes! Many commentators have made kinship references to contemporary musicians, but to me this has the feel of a Greek chorus straight out of Euripides.
