Sweets for my babe (w/Dadai)

Description
This song came along as a tip of the hat to the godfather of soul Mr.. James Brown. Both Jack Miller (Dadai) and myself have found much inspiration in his music.

Jack has delivered the sax parts and some sexy backing vocals. I had a go at topping the sax with my old trumpet at some parts.

Wanted to make this a funky tribute and have been listening to some of James Browns songs to get the right feel of this one. You might recognize some hooks...

The lyrics was rather fast put together as I was eager to get this one on the road. I guess it's about a mans trouble with keeping his woman happy. Pure fiction of course;)

Technical details:
Dadai: tenor sax and sexy backing vocals

Thoddi: trumpet, bass guitar (some autowah added), guitars, organ and piano, lead vocal, backing vocals. Dragged out my groove box and used some effects from it like, "come on" phillys and did some drum tapping. Funky drum loops.

oh man yourself
After listening to your funky 'Brother Soul', you sure have shown us what you're able of pulling off. Not that I have ever had any doubts about your skills, but man... you are in another league:)
Thank you very much for listening and giving such positive feedback. I'm honored!

Serious fun...
Recognize a lot of those riffs....

Funk in every measure. Guitar, organ, bass, drums... A nice tribute to the spirit of JB...

Love the sax break...

Shame you got all those pops and crackles in the vinyl before you could post it...

thoddi... da man.
Great song you wrote here. And you really catch the spirit of James Brown and his music. I am not surprised, though... so many of your songs have so much soul in them. Being able to put some sax parts and a solo riff to such a song as this is just so fine for me. It does bring back the memories of playing in a soul band years ago... are you planning any visits to southern California?? Heheh...

cheers-- Jack

Jack - the man
Yeah, a cool soul band traveling around California sounds like a nice place to be:) Thanks for working with me on this. I enjoyed our email exchange and the joined efforts to get this on the road. Hopefully not the last time we do a collab:) You have got a good grip on that tenor sax, and I'm impressed with how good you play that horn after being away for it for some years.

Scandi funk!
BIG production! In your face and in your ears! Very hard to sit still in my chair for this. All the parts are really well played, and sit just right in the mix. I bet JB's rockin along somewhere to this one.

Thanks
Hi Neil, I've thought of the last comment I gave you about using drum loops, and when I worked on this, I really wanted to do something about the drums here. But a funky rhythm is not the easiest to pull of, so I chose to keep the loops. Listening to mcboy's 'brother soul' is a pure pleasure hearing what real drums can do.
Thank you very much for such a nice review on this. It was very nice working with Jack on this one.

mighty smooth n creamy vocals, boys - your collective attitude was a pleasure to twitch to. you sound tight and like you play together 5 nites a week. those "she sez" s were SO snazzy - loved em. cool horns! they add an important flavor. sax solo launched an excellent direction of its own, and transition back to the verse was handled very well. good job - enjoyed the listen! anne

holy CRAP, this ROCKS!!!!!
I love it! Sorry, I'm not going to get all 'musician-critical". I have nothing to say. But did I already mention this rocks?

Oh, and I love love love that piano riff from Sex Machine. I played that live a few times back in my band days. It was one of the most fun songs to play and you guys certainly demonstrate that here, too.

Hu!
Ah, what a surprise... I just listened to McBoy's tribute and now this! A pure delight. Lots of 'sex machine' references in this one (still the man's most groovy track to me). Nice fat funky drums, sparkling organ riffs, and of course... Jack's tenor babe. No way to stay seated on my chair, boys. Hu!

Where did you learn to funk like that?
This is an excellent funk tune. Fine playing and singing by all parties concerned. Including the looped drummer :-) The guitar is getting in the way of the sax during the solo, though.

Excellent work on the sax, too, Jack. Jump back Jack!

I just like saying jump back. I admit it.

Sweets
"Sweets for my Baby" may have been something that just popped into your head, but it really works as a perfectly delicious mouth-watering theme for this wonderful funk groove.

Not only does it feel right for a James Brown tribute song, but it has the sound of truth to it - I'm sure I will be humming it to myself the next time my wife convinces me it would be in my best interest - as well as hers - to head up to the confectioner to get her some chocolate : >
