I Could (jolofsson collab)

Description
This song is the result of a random pairing of two collaborators with less than two weeks to complete the track. Because of time constraints, we actually completed this in a week.

Jolofsson sent me the instrumental track, and I came up with the lyrics/vocals and sent them back for him to do the final mix.

It was a lot of fun, and I highly recommend this creative challenge!--Kudos to all those participating in the MJ's random pairing collab project coming up :)

Thanks so much, Johan, for the great backing track and for allowing me to share this song here!

Lyrics
When all had seemed its darkest...
Paths seemed to stray
When sterling dreams had tarnished...
Faded to grey
As looming clouds had gathered,
Blocking my way

A silver spark of hope, and your smile
And echoes in your words
Told me I could

You made me see those dreams I held inside
You gave me freedom to realize them
You always knew that I could reach the sky
And now I, too,
Believe that I can.

A silver spark of hope, with your smile
And echoes in your words
Tell me I can

And now I see those dreams I held inside
And I can dream and reach the sky, and
I always knew those dreams were mine, and
You gave me proof
That I can reach the sky

That I can reach the sky

Fab pop track
Its amazing that you managed to put this together in just a week! This is a great catchy pop number...I can imagine dancing to this in Ibiza. Its really cool to hear your vocals in this pop context.
Great collaboration

Really nice pop tune, wonderful writing. Your vocals work well, Mystie, I like it when you embrace the discipline of this sort of structure and arc, and I enjoyed the backing arrangement. There is more reverb than on a normal pop track; reminds a bit of musical theatre sopranos, in the Sarah Brightman tradition. The track has a bit of a demo feel, lacking the precision of a finished radio ready pop track in several spots, but is a delight throughout, capturing the perfect mainstream pop sense and employing a really nice transparent arrangement and energy. Wonderful collab; thanks for sharing it here.

Thank you, Tobin,
For your kind words and your comments here.

I'm glad that Johan did the mix on this one, because I would have been lost as to how to mix a proper pop track!
It was, indeed, a fun collaboration and it's always a little surprising to me to hear how my voice will 'adapt' to different styles and genres.

Again, kudos and thanks to my collaborator, jolofsson, for giving me a great canvas upon which to 'paint.'

nice pairing of talents
I liked the way this song built up from the beginning, leading to the drum entrance.

The very opening instrumental section with vox sounded a bit strong over my headphones; your vocals were very subtle during the first verse (but perhaps that was your intention). It might have been good to keep the accompaniment level low and then build up the intensity.

You're in excellent vocal form, and the lyrics effectively offer hope.

Overall, Jolofsson's instrumentals are excellent, and catchy in a "pop" way.

This was an enjoyable listen. Good collab!

:)
Thank you, Patrick!

This track did exactly what it was supposed to do, then ;)
I wanted it to be hopeful and expanding beyond the initial brooding tone of the cello.
As I told Johan when I first listened to the track, it seemed to be a contrast of dark to light, of overcoming challenge and/or struggle.

I'm glad it brightened your day :)

Dreamy...
Mysti, your vocals are topnotch. Most of your songs I've heard are in the world genre, but this song proves your awesome capability to do pop, and possibly rock. Your voice has a smooth quality and it flows well though high and low parts of the song. The male back-up vocals by Johan provide a textured tenor counterpoint to your flowing soprano, and they meld well. The background music is heavenly. The song is a little too short for me. Kinda cut me short of going into full dream mode.

Leon,
Thanks so much for your comments here :)

As pop is not a genre I sing a lot in, yours and other comments here have been very helpful.

I had to chuckle when you said the song seemed too short. I remember listening to the instrumental the first time and noting that it was over 4 minutes long, and wondering if I'd be able to come up with enough lyrics. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed this track. Thanks again for taking the time to leave a comment :)

Sky reached!
This is to officially assert that you actually reached the sky with this song! It was awsome and will defenitely play many times in this house! Thanks for the download! The text was brilliant, and very hopeful. Made me quite happy in spite of some computer problems we're having here tonight.

The thing that keeps popping into my mind...
...is how much wider your vocal approach is, compared to when I first joined MacJams... The way you attack and phrase notes and phrases seems to these ears to be more flexible and adaptable... You seem to be using a very "open" tone here that suits the pop backing... On its own, this would be impressive, but having recently done our collab, I'm also very aware that you are able to bring a different vocal approach to different songs, or even different vocal approaches to one song...

The backing sounds very much like a solid pop demo, and could be tweaked for impact with ease...

All in all, a very neat confection...

Ed

You certainly can
It's a nice strong contrast, the Mysti voice sound with the electronica-based instruments, and beautifully layered and textured throughout. A great feelgood song!

Sorry I'm late!
The email notification for this has been sitting in my inbox for far too long, but I finally made it. Really nice backing track - interesting, yet not totally overpowering - kind of like a SIL-VER instrumental track without the caffeine :) Mysti, your voice really suits this style - I agree with Ed's comment about a new, more "open" approach - I'm really impressed!
Excellent collab.
