Description
A little sidewalk... this is not a moorlandt track. Well, partially it is. About a month ago, iComp organised the ‘Invisible Dyad’ contest: http://www.icompositions.com/artists/Invisible+Dyad.
A kind of blind collab where I was linked to an artist named ‘RoboScott’. It was a real pleasure to do this song with him.

I think it turned out pretty well, although… we didn’t win the competition. Haha! Well, whatever (and despite of the fact that I even don’t know our ranking) I decided to transfer this song to MacJams. With the blessing of my iComp collab partner of course.

Composition, final mix and all instruments: RoboScott
Lyrics, vocalising, some arrangements and chords: me

Thanks for the listen

Lyrics
You burned the books I wrote
You teared the chapters one by one
As if it were just sketches on a notepad
But every word was true
It’s all about you, all about you

The empty room is cold
And you forgot your lipstick on the bed
Your favourite piece of red
But all I feel is blue
Being without you, being without you

On this injured winter morning
There’s not left one piece of you
Snow and coldness, stains of coffee
Cleaned up kitchen
And the closet’s cleaned up too
I wish you left your heart
And in my mailbox, there’s a letter
But I don’t have the guts to read these words off you
‘cause none of them is true
It’s all about you
It’s all about you

This worn out wooden house
Does not reflect your footsteps anymore
Your rhythm on the floor
And all that I can do
Forget about you, forget about you

The pictures on the wall
Are shouting lurid lyrics in my ears
The relics of our years
The fire we went through
Will die without you, die without you

On this injured winter morning
There’s not left one piece of you
Snow and coldness, stains of coffee
Cleaned up kitchen
And the closet’s cleaned up too
I wish you left your heart
And in my mailbox, there’s a letter
But I don’t have the guts to read these words off you
‘cause none of them is true
It’s all about you
It’s all about you

Good stuff
I dont want to comment first. I' m moody at the moment as well. Ill have a second listen now.
I like this song. The lyrics are very good. You play with words like not many can. I have seen comments that share this opinion. Your voice is as good as the lyrics. Still the recording is missing your low frequencies, could be the speaker set. I like the layering of all the melodies and harmonies, very subtle. I do miss a certain punch to the instruments. I just adore the piece where you sing over organ and accordion. I think the strings lack the punch. Still i gave it straight 8's. No nines, no sevens. There is a nice bridge were one of you two portrayed serious skills. Perhaps it is too polished? I dunno. What do I know (without trying to marginalize the above).

thanks Marc...
...for this very insightful comment. I know, this is quite different from my last song 'Somehow'. But on the other hand, it's also a collab song, in which I always try to respect as much as possible the partner's basic ideas and sounds. A brilliant learning experience (which I hope is mutual for my partner Scott) that turned out not so bad in my ears, considering we never heard of each other's music until the time we got coupled for this contest...
Your words are very much appreciated.

Wow Moorlandt ...
... it's refreshing to hear you "Belt one out" ... I like the fact that I am hearing more harmony in your vocal tracks ... I think that as you become more confident in your singing ... it is reflected in your tracks. You're taking some risks now, shooting for and definitely hitting those higher notes (even though your voice is still rich, bass and resonating) ... I like the lyrics too.
moorlandt said 1021 days ago (February 9th, 2007)
Alannah...
I certainly won't give up on my more intimate and 'deep voice' soul songs, but it's incredible how much you can learn as a singer when collaborating with so many various musicians. Those music communities are no less than a blessing...

Thanks for the listen and the heartwarming comment, lady Alannah, queen of soul (making a deep bow while speaking these words).

Successful collab!
Big touches of Bowie in there Walter - much more apparent in this than your normal key/s of choice. Nice, spacey backing with lots of light and shade supporting your vox. Again, some amazing lyrics considering - we've discussed this before, and I remain impressed! Definitely a successful collab.
Welldone to you both.

No bigger honour than to be compared with Mr Bowie. In my honest opinion, I don't even reach the duke's knees. You're waaaay to kind, Neil :-) And thanks so much again about your positive comments on the lyrics. The most stressy part for sure. Every time. Thanks for lending your ear again, my Aussie friend!

Yes
I really hear your inner Bowie in this song! Nice singing, Walter. The music is pretty cool; I think the bass could have more presence, as well as the drums. The synths are very neat, and the soaring sound works.

Simply wonderful!!!!!
This track is a credit to you both.

I'm awed by the music, lyrics and production.

To me this song has instant appeal. I knew that I was in for a treat after listening to about 2 seconds of the intro.....and I was not disappointed.

The return of the Thin White Duke...
... yeah, you have moments of channeling Bowie here...

But there are other things here that are cool... I love the background synth and percussion track very much, and particularly love the bass sound... on my own headphones, this is a very full, very deep and very spacious mix... I love the subtle use of the acoustic guitar sound....

Might be a point where I'd love another dB in the vocals or a little compression, so the vocals get just up above the mix, make it easier to hear the lyrics...

The lyrics are once again a novel in miniature...

It all adds up to a very effective collaboration, to my ears....

Much of the credits coming out of your great comments go to Scott. So glad about that. It was a real pleasure to work with this guy. He's not only a talented composer, but also a wonderful person to collab with. It all matched from the very beginning, and I'm pretty happy about the final result. Thanks again, Ed, you're always a welcome guest to my page.

well those competitions... music isn't a game of sports, but it can be pretty exciting to join in such contests.

I remember this one from listening to it at icomp. I liked it then and even more now hearing it again.

Beautiful lyrics
served by your expressive and moving voice. Recalls me David Sylvain a bit. The lyricism of the melody could make of this song a fantastic one if I was not somehow driven apart by the orchestration, which, in my humble opinion, lacks of brilliance and punch, and this song really really begs for it. Beautiful, anyway.

Youra...

It's all about the depth
For me it's primarily about the lyrics-they hook me right away, and, like your voice, are always powerful, expressive, and unique. There is an instrumental break where it moves into a major key (the song is mostly in minor) that sounds nice on a purely musical level, but it seems to be sending a different message from the lyrics; this instrumental section sounds happy, hopefull, positive, while the lyrics are about the emptiness the guy is feeling... that seemed to me like a mixed message, and didn't make sense to me.

I agree with some others that the strings are spongy, but it gives it a retro feel, which may be what your collaborator was going for?

I think it would be interesting for you to take these lyrics and try a different version of the song on your own. I think there are a few spots where the lyrics could be edited a bit just in terms of improving syntax -- for example, "you torethe chapters (out), one by one, as if they were just sketches on a notepad." I can give you more editorial suggestions if you'd like; just E-mail me.

My stringest impression, though, is of the emotional depth you express through your lyrics and singing.

touchy and edgy
i see random connections to evita and depeche mode's vocal in a totally unique way! loved the instrumental section as well as your vocal.. chorus feels so touchy in a kind of way present in evita music (don't cry for argentina) yet it sounds brighter and more hopeful with the groovy percussions. i think it adds the third dimension.

thank you for sharing this piece of music!

Beautiful
This song hits my heart directly, been listening to it for a few days. I have nothing to critique on really, this so solid, so well arranged and perfomed to recorded and mixed. For sure Sylvian and Bowie, but to me this is a song as good as "Vienna" by Ultravox. It has that same effect on the first time I heard that song for some reason, powerful, symphonic, epic. This is very, very good. Your voice is, I mean, wow! /Mikki

Great track Walter...the vocals are really powerful and involving. Like a hyrbrid of Scott Walker and David Sylvian. The musical backdrop is suitably lush and cool....it carries the melancholic feel of the lyrics nicely.

... Walter, and I'm really glad you posted this. It has a real European, 80's feel to it, really atmospheric. Reminds me a little of gary numan/tubeway army, and my dark youth. The backing really supports your vocal, which is so commanding, and what evocative lyrics.

GRAND
i liked the epic soundscape created here. i'm not well versed in production, just your average ear, but i heard an intimate vocal in a grand scale musical surrounding and it balanced beautifully. vulnerable writing - the red lipstick/blue stanza stood out for me as especially nice. vocal was exciting to listen to, as the melody was not dull, but went to many places. this feels large and spacious, but privately in my ear at the same time. bravo, gentlemen! anne
moorlandt said 1013 days ago (February 17th, 2007)
Anne...
Wow... So many flowers... What a wonderful review. I love your remark about the red/blue wordplay, wondering if other listeners have noticed this too. Anyway, you're the first to mention it. And yes, perhaps these lyrics are vulnerable... You know, every time when I start working on new lyrics, I tell myself not to write about love and emotions anymore... Tsss, it always ends up the opposite way of course. Guess I'm hopelessly romantic :-)

Thanks so much again for your heartwarming comment, Anne... and I just LOVE your latest song with Silver!
