Soothing
Your description is one of the best I have ever read here, it really outlines the progression of the piece. The composition is varied and imaginative and you playing is wonderful. I'm adding this one to my iTunes collection! Thanks for sharing.

rich earthy fresh sounds
Your playing and recording are quite wonderful here. This recording gives me a front-row seat, a personal almost tangible sensation of being right there as you play, excellent capturing of a guitar-in-a-room ambience. And the piece itself is soft and breezy in a way, but with a lot of rich depth as well, I guess you were going for little patches of sunlight floating across an otherwise cloud-obscured earth... that definitely came across. I can smell the moist sweet air. I'm literally glad to "hear" you have your recording setup working now!

Mr. Drakonis:
So glad you dropped by. Interesting point about the recording: I had the mic angled up, slightly. This caught my breathing more than if I'd had it angled down. Considered another take...but I actually like the added sound of life.

Very glad you enjoyed this one. And happy to be moving along with GB. Thanks, Eduard.

Wonderful
Great melody and perfect playing. You let the notes have the time they need.

The cherry on the cake is the marvellous record. It seems you're sitting right in front of me, playing guitar.

Faved, downloaded and I will hear this with a good whiskey in my glass.

But thanks so much, anyway. Means that much more to me.

:-)

Recording wise; I just put the mic in front of me and play. I'm used to a mic...but the GB's new. Li'l tweak of the eq and reverb. I'll get better with the editing, etal, as time goes on...guys like Alimar, etc, blow me away with that stuff.

Nice evocative playing
This is a very nice piece of guitar music...kinda jazzy, folky and a bit classical (a bit like Nick Drake playing the theme to the Deer Hunter?). Lovely guitar tone too

"Cavatina"...
...the theme from The Deerhunter" is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. It was part of my repertoire when I had the time to play covers/classical as well as write my own (when I performed regularly)...so I'm sure it's in this piece in some way or form.

I'm glad you like this, Steve.

Okay, Bob...
I had the feeling when I listened to the first thing you posted that you were going to be someone whose music I was going to love...

Now, I know nothing, and that really means nothing, about classical guitar, but I love how this sounds. I love the slow pace of it, I love the feeling that it is not rushed or busy, and I love the tone that you're getting in the recording and in the performance, which is neither too bright nor too deep... It's a very real and present sound, but one that doesn't call attention to itself as sound, and that allows the piece to speak...

Your playing also lets the piece speak. You don't approach this with a lot of drama or flash, and in this case, this perfectly suits the song. This is a beautiful melody, nicely arranged, and it evokes your haiku very nicely.

I love rain, and I love songs about rain. I really like this one...

After ....
Listening to this piece and once it ended, I sat numb, and in silence as I tried to comprehend the exceptional musical performance I just heard. Phenomenal tone, phrasing and overall musicianship. Quite clearly in my mind you are a talent, such that a mere mortal like myself can only hope to grasp a fraction of the true breadth of your musical genius. To compliment such wonderful technical prowess is a remarkably well composed piece of music that to my humble ears is nothing short of awe inspiring!!!!!

Norman,
Getting such praise from a superior talent such as your own is really something.

I am deeply inspired when I listen to your tunes, as well. It's good that you're humble...but please understand how deeply I respect your music.

It means a great, great deal to me that you enjoyed this tune so much. I must bow down before the muses on this one, though. Can't even remember how I got it together other than to say that I was sad and it came out. You know...

I see on my email that you've got another tune out...waiting for a quiet moment to enjoy it...

Beautifully played
You have a gorgeous, intimate sound here. I like the sound of fingers moving on the fretboard, and the slight sound of fingertip moving to fingernail as you play. This is really well done, sounds like one take. It's just a bit fragile sounding (in a good way), and I really enjoyed having that description, as it lead me through some of the ideas of the piece. Not much else to say, except faved & downloaded!

guitapick said 3610 days ago (May 6th, 2007)
Hi Kristy...
Isn't the nylon string guitar wonderful? As you said: the strings catch so much of the sound of the finger's "attack". Nice to talk shop with you...as you know the instrument, too. If I had to choose between all of my wonderful guitars (hopefully that will never happen), it would be, without a doubt, my classical. Been with me for so long.
I did a few takes and chose this one to put out here. Yes: no editing. For all it's imperfections, I felt it got the message across the best. Didn't want to fiddle around with it.
So happy you liked it.

Meditative
This is a very soothing piece of music. You have a very good technique with lots of control over loud and soft. And all the gradations in between. You actually play quite a few notes, but the result still has a stilness to it that is very restful. Sweet stuff.

The picking/plucking hand...
...is sometimes overlooked or made secondary by players. Both finger and flatpicking. Of the fine teachers I've had, the one who had the biggest influence on me was a guy I collaborated/performed with in Tucson. He really got me into concentrating on right hand technique and the importance of "where you're coming from" in music.
Thanks, Vic. You da' man...

I'm not...
...it's actually my twin brother.

;-)

I used a Rode NT3 condensor, tilted slightly up, around 8 inches from the soundhole. Usually have that mic level to the ground or pointed down from a boom. Don't know why I changed...but I liked it and kept it.

Put that through an M-Audio Firewire interface into GB2. Reverb's about 1/4 of the way up. If I was using 2 mics (one soundhole, one where the neck meets the body), I probably wouldn't use reverb at all. But it works surprisingly well in this situation.

Thanks for the listen, mate...

very early in my listen this was already fav'd.. the reason we work on our technique, and spend time perfecting our craft... is because this is our vocabulary, our means to communicate...

and when the time comes, our vocabulary may allow us to trancend the wood and steel... peel away the layers and just maybe scrape the soul at that one spot where nothing else could reach...

Tangible beauty
Started to feel guilty about downloading and listening to your song over and over without commenting! Fortunately it's pretty much all been said and I can just agree with all the wonderful things everyone's saying about your music. I'm also happy that the simplicity and beauty of playing an accoustic instrument is appreciated so much - I certainly started enjoying music like that more and more after growing up on synth pop and electronic music - maybe I'm getting older or MAYBE I'm just maturing a little bit musically and start enjoying real musicianship more and more. Anyways - please keep posting here, I'm starting to set up a playlist in iTunes with your stuff:)

Gotta love the NT3!
One of the best (most accurate) acoustic guitar recordings I've heard. Just sounds like being in the room. Amazingly accurate yet soulful playing, and what a collection of neat chords :)
I looked at a Fernandez Les Paul copy some time ago, and was unsure of the quality, but this piece is certainly a good advertisement for their acoustics.

NT3 rocks...
...it's really amazing.

I don't think that's the same Fernandez company, but I'm not sure. At the risk of putting you to sleep: here's how I found my Fernandez, decades ago:

I drove from Tucson to Los Angeles to buy a new classical guitar. Had heard about this great shop, owned by a luthier. Think his name was Masterson.
Walked in and there's this guitarist playing "Canarios", flawlessly, on a fantastic guitar (built by Mr. Masterson). Turns out he was the head of the guitar dept. at USC. I played it. I wanted it. I couldn't afford it.
"What about that guitar hanging on the wall, over there?" I ask, pointing to a beat up old thang which I'm thinking might be a deal.
Laughter all around. It's an old, original Rodriguez. Literally priceless.
"Wish I could give you mine...but, if you've got an open mind about the new Japanese builders; check this Fernandez handbuilt out. It's beyond a deal. They've been hiring the best Spanish luthiers to teach them how to build them and this one sings." says Mr. Masterson.
Didn't take long to make that decision.. Beautiful guitar. Has gotten better and better through the years. To show you how much I loved it: I sold my Martin D-18 (wonderful ax) to get the money up. Bittersweet regret which, after many years, was extinguished when I recently bought the OM-21.

No biggie on being late. So much music to check out here. Just glad you came by...

Hey...
...thanks for the listen. Loved (l-o-v-e-d) your video on Youtube.

Open tunings are fun. I'm really happy with how well this guitar takes to a capo. 5th fret and still rings true.

On some stereos the bass is a bit boomy...almost like a timpani. Works nicely, though. Pleasant surprise. Others it sounds like it did when I submitted it. Bass a bit more in the background. I'm new to recording.

Glad you liked...

Hi Bob
Thanks for your mail.
This is beautiful music man, I enjoyed every single note of it.
It doesn't need to be extended (don't!!).
This way it's like a piece of poetry.
Your recording is very good, and I like the sound of the guitar, it's direct, it lives.
Did you record it with only one mic?

see you

guitapick said 3600 days ago (May 16th, 2007)
Stefaan...
...normally, the engineers I've recorded with use 2 mics (one facing the soundhole and the other down from the neck). But you need two matching (hopefully "great") mics to do that. I don't have that luxury. So I used the Rode NT3, slightly tilted up, facing the soundhole (about 8 inches away).

Thanks for the listen and comment. Appreciate the input...

Hey!
Thanks for the nice words! It's definitely good to be listening to some more great musicmade by really nice people!

I'm doing a Master's in Education program in addition to my full-time teaching job and trying to remain a presence in my family, so it's hard to find the time to be involved the way I'd like to, but probably most everyone here's got a job and a family, so that's not a great excuse. I've got you and some others set to the "Notify me by e-mail whenever this artist posts a song" setting, though, so that's why I didn't miss this.

I've been doing some more recording in my spare time (!) including some Irish stuff with my hammered dulcimer and an amazing guitar player friend of mine, and also some country stuff with a female singer I work with. I'll ask both of them and see if they wouldn't mind me posting one of the pieces we've been working on for your critique/enjoyment.

~Brian

PS- those slit drums are cool! I'll be listening to see if it ever makes its way into one of your recordings!

...

yup, sublime playing and composition - that paints a picture: another fine element not every technically 'player' can do. You were in the preverbial zone for this ..hats off.

Mix wise: might just be these phones: the bass notes
/strings come through a bit more emphasis in spots (I mean more than intentional/natural to my ears .. making me
want just a touch more mid/treble on the higher picked
strings for balance, especially for their more fingerstyle bits (although I get the subtle variations in strengths, I mean more in general).. I don't know about using two mics/different placements but Cori (and of course others) might have some tips ..
but since he hasn't mentioned it .. it may well be
lighter playing, the bias of that guitar make .. or these darn afore-mentioned headphones .. so pay no heed. :o)

The NT3 is good for capturing a very true sound,
fret-noise and breathing an' all. Herein, there is also just the right amounts of that too ..and I hasten to add I could never do anything like this or get as good a recording, I'm just speaking my mind/ears. I download and listen with all speakers I have .. and then change my mind. lol.

Now that's interesting...
I heard that "boominess" in the bass, too, on my computer and phones. Sent the mp3 to a couple of others who didn't hear it. Listened again and didn't hear it. Listened again and: there it was...

Strange because, even when I play with the eq on iTunes...it STILL comes and goes...

Go figure...I can't. Comes and goes on the same or different speakers/systems. I can live with it, in that it sounds like a tympani...which works ok. Not what I want/recorded originally/like best...but doable.

Getting in touch with Cori's a good idea on this one.

I did I did!
The thing is, I DID listen to this a while ago, but apparently I never commented (?) This actually happens fairly often, usually because one of my kids physically starts yanking me somewhere.

In any event, congratulations on the huge success this has had! It is indeed a fine composition, very moody, and evocative of the programmatic title. So evocative, in fact, that before I even saw the title I was thinking this could be called, "A Rainy Day"!

Very nice writing, and well performed.

Wow - your craftsmanship is spot on.I love the chords youve found here, that major to minor is very romantic in a rustic way.I've just realised I am not familiar with your music and yet youve left me loads of comments - well this is absolutely wonderful and I could only ever hope to be able to play like that - I'm a piano player so I only kind of bluff away at it on guitar I dont really have any level of technique. This would be great to hear on top of the world looking over it - I'll be off there soon with your music in hand.I wasn't taking the mick out of your comment on the 'why?' forum by the way - was just feeling flippant and made a crude sexual inuendo on it but - I may add not without truth.Regards RG

"Wild blue yonder"?
Ha ha...I'm afraid those days are long gone. I DO still like to knock a few ales back, or, alternately, have a glass of red wine with a few shots of cognac and listen to tunes with the wife...preferably on Friday evenings.

No, I've just been busy working on two upcoming GOODWILLY collabs (to be posted by Jack and Vic) and a collab with Roxylee, as well as a couple possible new Amagi tunes.

When it gets this busy some things are bound to slip through the cracks. I'm sure you know how it is.

Again, CONGRATS on a fine piece of work!

One of these days I'm gonna figure out why those strings boom on one play and not another. Here at home, the GB, AIFF, and MPEG files I have sound great. On some computers it sounds the same. Others it's boomy. Sometimes it's boomy and then perfect on the same computer from play to play.

Well if you have a condenser mic you'll just need to put a bit of low cut on the Mic input this way you'll have less rumble- it's not a big issue it only happens twice on this recording but if yr strumming it might turn into more of an issue

Glad you like the tune and thanks for the comment on the haiku, too.

Lovely!
This is probably the sweetest guitar piece I've heard on this site. You're certainly not afraid to play real soft. Great stuff.

Scope.
This has scope for a frenzied banjo solo. We respect this.

Why, yes...
...a frenzied banjo solo is definitely a consideration...along with a heavily overdriven tuba. These are tough decisions...

I can see that you recognize and appreciate the fact that this is a work in progress...

Thanks Joe...
...it's funny...but you're right: it really does breathe. It's a very easy piece to get into playing and/or listening to...lots and lots of space.

I'm probably going to revisit the production, though. The bass is a tad too boomy for my taste. Such a nice thing about GB/Logic/ProTools/etc, isn't it?

this is just so smooth and light.
a very delicate approach. it creates such a peaceful, fragile beauty. i feel like i must be silent when i listen lest i disturb the delicate flow of the song.
marvelous!

guitapick said 3526 days ago (July 29th, 2007)
Thanks, Mark...
....yeah, it's drop D on the 5th. I really like the sound my classical gets with that setup. Plays really easy, too. Stretches and action.

I've been using a Planet Waves NS-4 classical guitar capo (and the standard one, too, for other acoustics). Used to be really into the Schubbs and still think they're great. But the lower profile of the Planet Waves makes it easier to place my thumb with certain stretches in the first position.

I think you know...
...how it sometimes works:

A "pedestrian" moment. Feeling sad (on this tune) or happy (on another). Sit down with your instrument and the next moment (could be hours or minutes later...time doesn't matter), it's either done or close to.

That's what happened here. I was very bummed on a rainy day.

I got that feeling from your piece, "DAWN". Spontaneous beauty. The picture is painted. It's beyond "you" or "me". One of the main (and many) reasons I write and play.

You, too, I bet.

Thanks for the time...

i see what you mean
how about two mic's? is that possible? one toward the neck, one toward the bridge? hell, even a room mic for headroom? could we just duct tape about 16 mic's on your guitar? that would be full!!!
this is a gorgeous tune. i want a clasical now, great, have to break that one to the wife. like 7 guitars aren't enough....and i am a singer....sheesh!
guitapick said 3446 days ago (October 17th, 2007)
Yep...
...every studio I've ever recorded at used two high quality mics. One pointed at the soundhole and the other on a boom stand, angled towards the soundhole from where the neck meets the body of the guitar.

I tried that with my two mics (Sennheiser and RODE) and was more than underwhelmed. Need the matching mics to make it work unless you know more than I do about the settings. So I stuck with one mic directly to the soundhole and was impressed with the result. Maybe I'll get another RODE NT3...or fiddle with the suggestions on the post.

Hey...thanks, RAD...for the listen and advice...

Completely
immersive. This beautiful sequence of sounds paints a space that is fully tangible: the smell of wet earth, the soft distant drumming of the drops on the ground, the rolling grey of the skies. As others have said, this is so very skillfully written and played. But, oh the result you leave us with!

Peace,
Doug
