Grieg Revisited

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is an improvisation based on 'Morning' from 'Peer Gynt' - by Edvard Hagerup Grieg. And a comment (below) from Griegs fellow-countryman Thoddi, gave me the Norweigan title: 'morgenstemning'.

It may be called an improvisation, but I think Thoddi in his comment gave a more accurate description:

"At first I expected a strict guitar version of 'morgenstemning'... But this jazzy Grieg version lives its own life, choosing unexpected paths. With so much altered and added I think it is more like a new song that includes some hook-lines from the old master."

2005 I posted an improvitation here, on the theme, and it's still on MJ, named Bluesy Grieg ..

The theme that has been following me for years .. trying to get done with it .. hope it will be the last one ..

Treasure
This song is a treasure, Johannes. I always enjoy your playing, even though I'm not good about posting something for every single song. To me, there's something in this about your own personal musical voice which is really unique and lovely.

Thank you Eorthman
Thank you for a great commen Eorthman! Well, guess my style has become more personal as years have passed. Before I was very eager to learn from others, but that is not anymore as tempting as exploring the own style. It has been a shift from "fingersytle guitar" and more and more over to "currystyle guitar"..

Grieg finally has the orchestration he deserves.
I'm not too familiar with Grieg. His only piece that I would recognize if I heard it is "In the Hall of the Mountain King". He composed wonderful melodies, but they are so forgettable because he orchestrated them all poorly. A great melody played on the wrong instrument is only a mediocre melody. I don't recognize the Grieg theme that you're playing, but I imagine you've given Grieg the orchestration/instrumentation he deserves. Your guitar has KILLER tone (way brighter and louder than most nylon strings), and your technique is absolutely flawless. I bow to your skill and acknowledge the soul from whence the music flows.

Peer Gynt's Morning Blues
Man, you really take this tune ("Morning" from Peer Gynt) and make it your own... this is, as you describe, a cross between Greieg and the blues.

The timing is interesting, because I just bought a two-volume collection of Grieg's piano music two nights ago -- I was in Costco (a bulk superstore), and for the first time ever that I've seen, they had some sheet-music collections mixed among their books, and I saw the Grieg and thought, 'cool! Maybe I'll try to learn some of these!"

Well, Johannes, this was very nice. I have been listening as I typed and it just ended. Very creative and passionate playing, once again!

Thank you so much Clark for your enduring support!

And now I also got the name of the theme - "Morning" from Peer Gynt! Thank you for that too .. will include it in the song presentation from now on!

Mr. Grieg...
...is one of my favorite composers.

And you did it right here, Johannes. The way you slip between major and minor is extremely effective.

I'm also really impressed with your shifts from finger picking to strum and back again. Great playing. Wonderful improv.

They discontinued that AG Stomp. Really like it. Fine sound out of that guitar, sir.

Thank you guitapick for a very intresting comment. I wasn't aware of "sliping between major and minor" .. will have to listen again see if I can hear what you mean ..

Neither was I aware of shifting from finger picking to strum and back again, but that is easier to introspect .. of corse these shifts are, just never thougt of them ..

And the AG Stomp .. yes .. I know people are sad because they discontinued, but I saw recently that the new Magicstomp is now in an acoustic guitar version:

Looks very interesting..

the transitions between the different moods are so natural.

i applaud your sensitivity, your bravery, your rhythm, and every finger you own.

thank you, johannes!

Top of the pile!
Curry, you are such a fantastic player - we all know and appreciate that - but you also have the best acoustic recording skills of anyone around. As Roxylee said, you make the strings sing, but you also capture them doing it - a very difficult thing to do indeed. You also seem to capture your enthusiasm for your instrument and the music - every time!! Strangely, I hear Leo Kottke in there sometimes - despite you "only" having 6 nylon strings!
Thanks for this one and all the others.

Grieg
Johannes,
I wasn't sure where you were going with this at the beginning and I was a little worried because it was so tentative... And then you just burst out into song! What a marvelous treat. Your skill is just wonderful and your inventive "take" on the Grieg would probably have made the old man smile up there in his little studio on the Norwegian fjords. I loved the exuberance in this song and am so glad to have found this little gem here. Way to go.

I love your raw improvisations...
...and I also love and enjoy your improvisations that are "variations and improvisations on a theme"...

I actually went my whole, long day at the office yesterday with you on the stereo. I didn't want music with words, because I had to write reports and do clinical billing/noting, so I put my Collected Cori Ander playlist on Shuffle, and just had your tunes playing all day long...

I enjoy the sense in your music that you both know your instrument and enjoy exploring its bounds, and the sense that you do so without a lot of ego and self-importance. You never sound flashy, contrived and show-off-y. You always sound as if you are approaching whatever you are playing with a good heart and with a sense of curiosity...

I like the sound you are getting here from the nylon string guitar. The combination of this guitar and the AG stomp really works for you. I continue to be envious...

It's always a pleasure to see a new song from you, Johannes...

THANK YOU Ed for a most comforting comment.. Some comments are so great I just don't know what to reply .. .. ..

What you say here exists at the very core of my own artistical ideals, and your comment gave me like a breathe out .. like: ah yes, it is percievable, it is recieved ..

Being at MJ has showed me so much, for exeample that music is so much a communication thing .. music can be self comfort for a while, but not for long .. only when music is give-and-recieve recieve-and-give it is complete and in its full meaning..

At first I expected a strict guitar version of 'morgenstemning'... But this jazzy Grieg version lives its own life, choosing unexpected paths. With so much altered and added I think it is more like a new song that includes some hook-lines from the old master.

Great playing Johannes. I had to pick up my guitar and try figure out how this tune really goes:)

Did you tune your guitar one note up from traditional tuning, or is your guitar tuned in an open F major?

Of two minds
On the one hand this is a nifty bit of finger picking. Well played, good sounding, all that.

On the other hand, if you want to do the absolute minimum justice to Grieg's piece, I think you really have to catche the I-vi-I harmony, not turn it in into I-IV-I.

Is what I think.

But you're a great player, and ignoring Grieg I enjoyed listening to this.

Grieg Revisited
My great grandparents rented a paddle boat, and left a beautiful little cottage back in Sweden, and so I listened to this song. I love Grieg, and I love Scandinavia, but I enjoyed what I've heard here simply because I love being human. Who on this earth can not enjoy this? I feel so guilty for downloading it! Where, on this MacIntosh, do I insert my quarter? Please give us more!
