Sirens

Description
This is my first rough draft/mix/meld of a proper tune.

The scene is some dark, night-time swamp, where the wild life is just waking up for some night action.

The sirens are Jack O' Lantern's vocal accompaniment.

Imagine a predator drone moving just above the waters surface with this noise as the sound track whilst filming the mists, fogs, flashes and the jumping, slithering residents.

(To be played with the volume very low or almost subliminally).

It's just an idea.

We'll see if I develop it at all, or shelve it with the others.

The term 'Jack O'Lantern, in American, means Halloween pumpkin, but I meant it in the English, for Bog Light or Will O' the Wisp, where marsh/natural gas is released and maybe alights spontaneously, just so there's no confusion in terminology.

not the visual I was thinking
I read your description first, and then listened. I gotta tell ya -- This was a pretty cool backdrop to some daydreaming. I started listening, and then I received an email from my dad with a very old picuture of me attached. (He must be busy finishing the daunting task of scanning and saving all our old family photos). Anyhow, he sent me a picture that must be 26 years old and as I looked at it and your song played, i got this strange nostalgic feeling. It was bittersweet. It prompted a bunch of other feelings stemming way back into my childhood. And Paul, the music perfectly fit the mood. It was really neat. Of course i hear your 'alien' decription, but I think this can be interpreted a few different ways. The choral melody is very sweet -- almost angelic, and it's a very cool juxtaposition to the sound effects. I love stuff like that. KInda like my Fireflies song.

I don't know if I can imagine this expanded. I, for one, would love to hear what you do with it. I like this, though. I like the minimalist and sweet/salty flavor. Nice, nice job.

This picture I paint with music.....
The particular pictures I paint with my music are visible in a unique way to each listener and everyone (hopefully) sees something that is theirs alone to own and take with them.

I'm happy you experienced your own picture, evoked by the tapestry of sounds that Sirens is. It effects me in a sad sort of way, but without any touch of nostalgia. Something lost but not forgotten.

We had floods here in Sheffield earlier this week, whilst I was working on this. I myself had to abandon my car after 5 hours of trying to get home. I eventually arrived 33 hours after I left, having managed to walk over to my parents from my car and stay overnight, during a power cut that lasted (for my parents) 28 hours.

Personally I can't compare this tune with your 'Fireflies'. I have visited, downloaded, listened (many times) to your tune and left my experience below your tunes' details. It plays now as I write this, for the umpteenth replay. Quite simply infectious.

If my mix is reworked at any time it would only be from the point of view of remelding/producing a more cinematic track, so it could be a while, or two. As the mix is, it stands well enough to leave I think.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the re-vision of your past.

Paul.

Cool, dreamy
As Miss C. says, this is a cool backdrop for daydreaming, free association, etc. A soundscape that conjures up not only images along the lines of your description of spookiness, but also, for me, spacey, dreamy images.

I don't really have any thoughts or suggestions for how to develop this further; it feels pretty complete as it is, but I'm sure if someone wante to do a collaboration, this could be taken in new and cool directions.

Nice work (improvised?)!

Thanks for stopping by and listening..
The piece was basically a 'doodle' and was made from 'interesting' sounds found on a soft synth.

The piece made itself, more or less, based on me programming the synth on the fly, so you could, loosely, say it was improvised but I didn't think of it that way. I followed where the music lead me.

Take care.

Paul.

This is very
cool. The sounds are effective, mesmerising and haunting. I found myself drawn in, hooked there and suspended. I tried to follow your suggestion of playing it at a low volume, but felt obliged to turn it up - all the better to be submerged in it. I liked your description of possible imagery for the music, but I felt more of a "space" vibe. Something wicked this way comes - and it's alien! I can see how you might want to do something more with this, but to be honest, I think it has a kind of power as is. Nice work. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

Thanks for your comments.....
I know exactly what you mean as far as sounds and ideas are concerned but I did try playing this at high volumes and it lost meaning in a way I didn't expect so that's why I used a suggestion from one of Brian Eno's albums, Discreet Music I think, where he tells about a time in hospital where he listened to music on one speaker, at a very low volume and thought that there was something in listening to music in an almost subliminal way. It seemed to work (for me) on this piece. It's the first piece of music I've done where this seemed applicable.

I'm happy though that you enjoyed the piece in your own way of listening. That's the beauty of music in that listeners can get out of the music different experiences entirely to those of the composer.

From another point of view, my dad thought that the idea of turning the volume down to zero was excellent for this particular piece of music. You can't please everyone!!

Take care.

Paul.

Experimental music is any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is. There is an overlap with avant-garde music. John Cage was a pioneer in experimental music and defined and gave credibility to the form. As with other edge
