Solo Star

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
An idea in search of bass and drum talent. I am also interested in any other solos if you think you could add something. The bass player should be prepared to add a bass break at some point in the mix. The drummer could play something like this GB loop or even something simpler, what I want is the well timed extra fills and cymbals that a live drummer knows when to add.

Finally an open question. What genre is this?

PS The title is from the dominant instrument. The photo is what comes up when you google "solo star", who knew!?

Solo Star
incredible hammond sound ...in the very
first line then the "moog?" sound give
extra flav ...ye I can see your idea about
the bass slaps and fillins .. but so far
its a cool song as it is now ...!

Good to hear from you. The organ and synth solos could easily be tightened up to make room other jams, to give the song more variety. Trying to come up with a sort of planned spontaneity.

I think the additions
that you hopefully get will determine the genre. Couldn't you just see Frank Axtell adding a nice solo to this? Nice bed and nice solo stabs.

Cool idea, Frank could make anything sound great! Thanks for the encouragement, we'll see where this goes with some real bass and drum...

Stinch of a funk...
You seem to be doing just fine w/ the drums, I think. Nice groove. Talk to Thoddi, 'bout the bass action. He may be interested. Or maybe even closer to what you may be looking for is, Hectorious. He'd slip right into this stinky little funk.

Any how, nice choice for everything, so far. Dign' it! Nice job. Macca

I'll check into your suggestions. Hectorious and Thoddi do do collabs. Funk? Hmmmm.... Lots to think about. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Great instrumental. I love it. Personally I wouldn't bother with real bass players or drummers - the bass is fantasic already, and if anything I'd make the drums more machine-like and manufactured.

Be interesting to hear a new version if you get it together though.

As for genre how about "post industrial metro-acid funk"? Not sure that's in the drop-down though :-))

You are making me rethink this thing. I really did not think it was very "done", but maybe if I follow some of these genre suggestions and come up with a more interesting drum part....is there a "post industrial metro-acid funk" loop out there somewhere?

Thanks for listening and commenting!

cool mixture
of bass funk and the organ. You marry the very nicely the funky bass and the synth jam. Cool staccato like synth pecks and the organ - cool and hypnotizing with dance fun:)

The staccato is really fun to do and is a bit different from conventional keyboarding, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.

Way cooooool!
I like the repetition of the melody by the organ and bass. I wish I could play the drums, which would benefit from a live recording by a talented player...genre? mmmmhhh! not sure either, but it has a hypnotic trance intrinsec to its rythm....which Clavinova do you have?

This is kind of trance like isn't it. I definitley want to do something with the drums here...still thinking about it.

My Clavinova is the the CLP-360. A no frills 88 key model I brought used in 1995. Key action is still great. Looks like you have a very nice one that's newer. Other than the voices, are there any fundamental improvements to the key action?

I'm digging the bass you have here now
but I see how this would be cool to take in a live direction. There's a little ELP in this number during the Hammond runs in the middle. Cool track.

I'm warming to the bass, but a little live action with some variety would help.

Keith Emerson's work with the Hammond for ELP often runs though my head :)

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Cool tune...
...the delay is perfect for your timing on the piece. Not too much, but just right.

Lots of space and "room to roam". Like very much, peacep

Good Production
I like the sounds of the keyboards. Very well done.

Overall this is kind of a funk jam. Not quite Jazz, but a song with lots of room for improvisation. It does repeat a lot and might benefit from a bridge or some kind of break.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am still working on this one. I also feel it definitely needs something. I have been scouring my old ideas for something compatible to provide a break in the song. Something will come up.

perfect
This is in such sync. I wish I had the ear for things like this. It sounds like more than just 3 instruments here (or maybe 2 with one in a different octave). Its the complexity of the melody that does it for me. Well made.

Only three instruments plus the drum beat. The "solo star" makes a quite a different sound depending on attack speed and the length you hold the notes. Glad you enjoyed it.

Some strat might sound pretty cool. I'm serious about other drum options too. Right now I am playing around with some of the funk loops from the Rhythm Jam Pack. Glad you dig the sound.

The pic, some kind of food processor?! It looks like it can do a lot.

I like the bass, too. You could try switching up the bassline after the break?

It's good as is or different. Does that help?

That helps, I think. I'm not really sure what the appliance does, but it has an odd look about it and this is a sort of odd song.

Early Nice with added funk
That Hammond is pure Emerson.

Needs some variation in the solos (as you hint at) but a good solid piece of retro funk.

Cheers

Always good to hear from you. I don't currently have a copy of "The Nice" but I remember it well :) Work is being done on this as we speak, I just work really slow.

Diggin hat hammond sound. Lots of tastful riffin and the soundbed is funky as all get out. The stuttering synth is perfectly sync'd for maximum funk thru out.

Thanks, I'm still getting the feel for the Hammond down. I'm not sure if it is the gb simulator or my touchy keyboard, but I find it pretty hard to get the Hammond sound out of garageband. Thanks for the plug on the synth, that is a fun part to play :)
