Lyrics
The minstrel boy to the war is gone
In the ranks of death you'll find him
His father's sword he hath girded on
And his wild harp slung behind him
"Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard
"Tho' all the world betrays thee
One sword, at least, thy right shall guard
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again
For he tore its chords asunder
And said "No chains shall sully thee
Thou soul of love and brav'ry
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!

The minstrel boy to the war is gone
In the ranks of death you'll find him
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!

Easy beats
I like the infectuous groove you have going here. This minstrel may be going off to war, but I feel he's initially at least whistling while marching down the road. Halfway, the mood turns it bit more ominous with the somewhat military drums. Having the beat drop out under the final lines is a good way of emphasizing them. Here really less is more.

Your processing on Richard's vocals is perfect for this arrangement. The fact that the vocal is not all the way in the front of the mix gives a strange character to the song, as if life (and even death) are not all that serious. Intriguing.

Cool work.

:)
Thank you very much :) I went through a lot of edits on this song before it came to be what everyone hears now. Sometimes when I'm making music I feel like I wanna cover all the bases, but I agree with you on the point that in this song less is more.
Again thanks a bunch! :)

Nice one
redmond. I am impressed that the beats fit so perfectly with the vocals. The guitar work (sounds real?) also fits well.
Cheers

Thanks!
When the song starts out, it may not sound greatly in sync, I hope I was able to pull it off :)

amazing
what a magic it is, listen to the song with earphones. for sure nothing new to you guys, but very much to me. i like, when the music is as loud, that all windows are shaking. but my lad is still sleeping, thats why earphones today. it is a magic all those different places the music is coming from to you. i like very much that heavy part in the middle, thats truly brilliant. i really have to praise rich, this tune is sang SO beautifully. in tune, strong, clean, melodic, in rhythm. it is a music its self.
i like the way you arranged it red. very nice.

Thanks and you know..
I agree this song seems to have a difference when it comes to speakers vs headphones (especially the ending I think). I'm really glad you enjoyed it :)
Also Im not sure if the song went on too long. I look at it and even though 4:42 is considered somewhat long, the song sounds short. ? No idea how that happens haha
I'm glad you enjoyed it - wake up your lad and have him listen too haha kidding

Definitely one of the more intriguing
arrangements I've heard so far. VicDiesel described my thoughts very well - so I won't repeat. I like the way Richard's voice seems to be coming from the past in the left speaker to meet the present in the right. Cool track.

Hey :)
Thanks I'm really happy you enjoyed it, it took some time to decide which vocal effects to use and when to use them, hopefully I got it right! haha

What a ..
very original treatment. The vocal tricks are great and really give interest. I can almost see him striding out to that beat, M

When I first heard his singing, a drumbeat just entered my mind, so I went from there :) I'm glad you enjoyed it!

another nail
You nailed it. I love the way you married your beat and my vox track. What an incredible soundspace. Moving across the stage of life and death. Passages through time and space. Almost approaches the magic of a Beatles concept album.

Thanks Schletty!
I'm especially glad you enjoyed it since they were your outstanding vocals! Hopefully this song did some kind of justice to your singing haha

Thanks :)
Sometimes I want my songs to have a certain symbolic theme to them, other times I just put in what sounds good.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Very nice
I like this alot (very orb-ish). The beats are brilliant and very well constructed. The melody is nice and hypnotic. The vocal has been mixed very well, I like the fact the it pans from speaker to speaker with a little bit of delay and echo. Well done very nice.

thanks!
and now after listening to it so many times, i wish i made a better transition toward the ending, it seems too abrupt - but hey if it's getting all this praise then I'm not gonna change it :)

very cool take!
i like the whole thing! killer beats!
i even like the way you lowered (compressed) rich's voice!
great job!
JohnnyCalling said 851 days ago (July 29th, 2007)
the compressed effect
is somethin i used in other songs and it's always been successful so i thought it'd be cool to put it in this song. then the ending guitar used the panning effect, which kinda bothered my ears a bit but oh well - its a hit! hahaha

yeah and with that feeling present, i just wanted to leave the song off with a striding beat, i think it serves as sort of an introduction to its sequel or other songs.

Contemporary, and yet...
timeless. It seems '60s... and yet not. 70s? Perfectly. And yet not. Today? The sounds evoke different eras and states of mind, and yet it's enitely its own master.

This is one of the best marriages of the vocal with a rhythmic music beat, no easy job but wow, they sound made for each other. Bonus? Creative and unexpected surprises as well!

Nice work.
JohnnyCalling said 851 days ago (July 29th, 2007)
when i was making the song
i felt the tune that comes in at 1:33 sounded like somewhere between Starry Eyed Surprise (Paul Oakenfold) and Everybody's Talkin' (Harry Nilsson) - two songs I like :)
I'm also working on a song that is 60's ish, it might introduce yet another artist under the Redmond umbrella :P

I'm really glad you enjoyed this song though! :)
