Lyrics
Piano

i remember
when you were just a little girl
my sister... playin' the piano
every day after school

life was simply
school buses
passing notes in math class
lunch hour
recess

times were different then
simpler then

and i can still remember... those days
after school...
my sister... playin' the piano

those days have morphed... before my eyes
you're a woman now
with a daughter
playin' the piano

I love the space you placed the piano in
it transported the song. The additional orchestration works really well too - along with the decomposing of the steady flow into a contemporary feel. Very cool movie.

there are two layers of reverb in that piano solo. you can hear it pretty clearly on headphones. the first layer is an AU Matrix Reverb of a "medium room" - meant to sound like a piano in the living room. the second layer (more obvious in the higher register) is a huge space - meant to evoke the idea of recalling a memory.

thanks

A wonderful song
about the circle of life. Thoughtful and original composition as always from you and one that is flawlessly produced.

i used differing instruments to imply time. the opening is medieval lute. it then becomes piano, then grand piano, then electronic instruments.

see my reply to Bud about the reverb on the piano section.

Something different
Really nice to hear something so different and refreshing. Very moving and atmospheric. I found the second half quite meditative. Beautiful.

Hi Smokey
Took my time on this one. Very personal, but still easy to get into. I like the layers of Bach you are using here. You match the tempo of your voice to the melody well.

Thanks

i needed to break up Bach's 6/8 time signature into 4/4 to create the transition from the past to the present. so i treated all the 6/8 rhythm as triplets in 4/4. during the early part of the "those days have morphed..." loop i shifted the timing of the bass line from 1/4 triplets into 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4.

i made the looped words accent the rhythm of the 4/4 beat. i faded in the loop in advance of the bass change to try to smooth over the transition.

thanks

forgot to mention: the ref to "math class" is because i always felt that Bach is very mathematical

Bach
I remember reading a book called "Godel, Escher, Bach" the author (Hofstadter??) thought Bach was the epitome of well thought out, mathematical music.

yeah... i've read that a few times - an excellent thought provoking book - perhaps that's where i got the math idea from...

thanks again

Those days have morphed...
...before my ears...

Nice evocation of piano practice...and life...and everything... Like Laurie Anderson with more heart...

Neat...

i must 'fess up - to you and PeacePiano - that i don't actually have a sister. but something about the interplay of the roles of sister/mother/daughter seemed to require a sister here.

i used the voice loop (those days have morphed...) to drive the morph of 6/8 treated as triplets into the closing 4/4 time sig.

thanks

hypnotic
Really effective in taking me back to my childhood, when everything was there just for enjoyment. After kindergarten, reality set in.

i realized after the fact that i chose "all the wrong things" to remember about school: not the academic aspects, but the social aspects of school. i'm not quite sure why i did that, but golly, it works nicely.

thanks

This hits...
...a very familiar theme, lately, in my life. The passing of time...like it was 2 weeks ago..."morphed, before my eyes" puts it perfectly.

Powerful tune...great builds and instrumentation. Kudos...

me too. i felt that way when our kids grew up and moved away...

and i'm feeling it again even more strongly now that they have kids of their own...

seeing how my grandson and granddaughter get along so well somehow prompted me to imagine him seeing his sister in this light some day not so long from now...

thanks

oddly enough, this song is an imaginary memory for me personally. never had a sister, and my actual brothers don't play the piano.

Yes, darlin' :-)
And I never could get the hang of reading the music - so I just memorized the pieces, which worked for "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", but not for Pachabel's Canon in D. :-) My daughter is the pianist in our family - she's very good thanks to her father's talents in that area. Peace and Love and happy memories Big Brother. :-)

memory music...
taking one back... to your memories and to the listener's. Great concept here and well performed. I really like how the sparse intro grows to the fuller orchestral set... lovely.
