The Butterfly

Description
This is an arrangement of a Tommy Potts tune called "The Butterfly." It was originally written as a jig but I thought I'd try slowing it down and adding some strings to give it a kind of "epic" feel, one could say. I was pleased with the outcome. This was a product of a project my roomate and I did for a Celtic Music course.

The guitar was recorded live with the microphone of a Sony Handycam (ah improvisation) and the rest was done in Garageband with the keyboard of my MacBook.

Hope you enjoy, comments are appreciated!

Addendum
I forgot to mention, the melody lines were actually inputed through notation manually then processed by the piccolo flutes in Jam Pack 4. I'm not that crazy on a MacBook keyboard, lol.

very nice work...
not familiar with the original tune, but this is a very pretty instrumental choice, and very nicely arranged... very pretty guitar playing too (I usually have trouble with video-camera mics picking up motor-hum, this sounds clean.) The ending was a bit abrupt, probably could have some drums build and on the last hit, hold the ending chord. Great bit of orchestration here, welcome to Macjams, from another note-by-note composer!

Ending was a problem
Well thank you, great to be here. This is a seriously great site. And yeah, I definitely agree, the ending is very abrupt. This is mainly because this was the last tune I had to arrange for the project and by that point I was getting a bit tired. The abrupt end was the best I could do at the time. I'd like to go back and fix it up, I'll keep the suggestions in mind.

A superise
I didn't expect to hear such a dainty-fine guitar fantasy here. Nice and enjoy the subtle bass. Sounds so fairy-celtic with that nice touch on the guitar. But the added instruments is very pleasant. Maybe one of the best celtic type pieces i've heard here at MJ. The addition of the percussion is terrific especially how everything builds up and is not overdone.

Way to go.

Impressed !

Best Celtic Piece
The best Celtic-type piece you've heard here? I couldn't ask for more than that! Thank you, sir. The guitar is very fairy isn't it? I like it.

Very pretty slowed down!
I especially like hearing the bass notes coming in and out, and the richness of sound towards the end.

Well observed
Those two are probably my favorite features. I was using our bass player's 5-string Samick which allowed for those deep, rich bass tones. The strings came together quite well too. I don't like a lot of high end, but just enough to balance and add clarity to the lows and mids.

Butterfly.

I like this very much, I can just imagine a beautiful Butterfly flitting and fluttering Its wings in a field of green. With all manner of beautiful flowers. Not sure if I put that quite right? Anyhow fantastic melody.

Sounds good
Sounds like a pretty picture to me, and yes, it is quite a beautiful melody -that's one of the reasons I picked it, that and it was in A Dorian, I believe.

This got my attention right way
love the whimsical way about this tune. Each part of this tune sounds very nice. It's almost like it should be called celtic fantasy. I am not sure if i've heard better sounds in this type of genre. Each introduction of instruments seem to flow and fit in quite nicely. Love how the midway through you get real expressive with the cymbals and string orchestra. Very nicely done. Your really add a lot of suspense there. The delicacy of the plucked instruments is terrific. It's almost like a bolero for celtic orchestra. Nice when I hear the low cello and the plucked strings and the end.

This is terriic!

Enjoyed and truly one of the best of this genre I've heard here.

Thanks so much
Great comments, especially coming from you. I've really been enjoying your tunes and the high quality of your guitar playing. The input is really appreciated.

I would also like to take this opportunity to get a word in from our drummer. He would like it to be known that the drums in the large parts were actually done on his floor tom, using plastic serving spoons covered in socks. He's proud.
