Description
One of the great things about Macjams is the wealth of information that's shared. I've learned so much in the year or more that I've been here, in terms of recording my tunes. Thanks so much...
I've been re-mastering some of my earlier songs lately, using the techniques I've learned. "Butterflies and Dragonflies" was my first submission here. It was recorded weeks after my daughter and I performed it at my in-law's 50th wedding anniversary. They're both poets/writers. That's going on 2 years ago.
We only did one take with one track. Minimal editing/effects. I've been able to make some subtle but (imho) effective changes since then and am offering it to you for your comments.
Some points to be made:
1) Because it was only one take/one track, I can't adjust the guitar or vocal
volumes separately. Too bad, as the guit's a bit heavy over parts of Ava's vox.
I can, however, live with that, as I've heard it all before: "Turn that freakin' guitar
DOWN"!
2) We could record it again, but, as I said: we did this weeks after the event for
which the piece was written. It's "fresh"...and this is what she and I sounded like
at the time. That's important to me.
3) When I first uploaded it, some people mentioned shortening the intro a bit.
I've decided not to for the same reason cited above and...well...I
like it like this. So there....
All thanks in the world to Ava (can hear her stuff at http://www.macjams.com/artist/garner_smake). Both for her vocals and spurring on the lyrics (it was going to be an instrumental before she "interceded") and to Jim Baker for doing the recording.
BTW: this is the same guitar you can hear on "Hayseed"...the versatility just blows me away. Just angle the mic and/or picking hand differently and sail on...

Lyrics
"Butterflies and Dragonflies"
Lyrics by Bob Prince and Ava Prince
There's a girl on the shore of the ocean
singing, but nobody hears her.
So she sings to the sky
and the land breeze
carries her words out to sea.
And her thoughts travel like butterflies
blown by the winds of summer skies
yet sure to reach their partner
in the end.
There'll be friends and books and poetry
a son and daughter family
and grandchildren to smile at you today.
Near a dock in the cool rays of morning
a boy takes his boat out to sea.
And he raises his sail to the sunrise
catching her clear melody.
And the ship moves like a dragonfly
that travels on the passing time
to meet it's destination
on the shore.
There'll be friends and books and poetry
a son and daughter family
a granddaughter to sing this song to you.
