Description
When I sat down to record this one Friday afternoon, I reckoned I could get it done by dinnertime. I'd record all the basic tracks, maybe do a few punch-ins and comping the following day, and then just spend some time mixing and mastering, maybe post it on Monday.
That was about two months ago...
The basic song was pretty straightforward, or so I thought. But when I started recording, I struggled to get it to sound right. Some of the lyrics needed to be changed. I couldn't sing part of the chorus. I found it hard to get the right instrumental color. The arrangement didn't feel right. The middle eight was awkward....and on and on...It became a long drawn out process.
I managed to address most of these issues through trial and error (and a healthy dose of sheer luck) but one aspect I could not get right was the lead guitar. It just stumped me. Everything I tried was either jarring or uninteresting or....what's the word I'm looking for...oh yeah, bad!
So I asked Ed (Ejh) if he would give it a shot. Not only did he graciously agree, he devoted a chunk of time and energy to it, and in very short order! And he absolutely nailed it! His melodic playing and lovely clear sound were just what was needed. Now I cannot imagine the song without his guitar.
Thanks and deep bows, Ed. I appreciate all the time and creativity you put into this. It was just a pleasure to collaborate with you.

Lyrics
Turn Away Slowly
What kind of accident does that?
What kind of monster do you love?
When did the lie turn into a fact?
When did the push become a shove?
You want to go but you don’t want to leave
You say you know and then you say you just can’t believe it
Now the facade has disappeared
Now that the mask has dropped away
What is it keeps you standing here?
What is it makes you want to stay?
You say you know it’s a pitiful romance
You say you’ll go but you want to give it just one more chance
Turn away slowly
Walk quickly to the door
Don’t look back
Step out into the world
Gather your forces to your side
Gather your strength for what’s to come
Lean on the ones who love you right
You don’t have to face this night alone
I know you know the sun will shine again
It’s time to go and bring this tragedy to an end
Time to show the face you hide
Time to trust yourself and say goodbye
What kind of accident does that?
What kind of monster do you love?
When did the lie turn into a fact?
When did the push become a shove?
You want to go but you don’t want to leave
You say you know and then you say you just can’t believe it
Now the facade has disappeared
Now that the mask has dropped away
What is it keeps you standing here?
What is it makes you want to stay?
You say you know it’s a pitiful romance
You say you’ll go but you want to give it just one more chance
Turn away slowly
Walk quickly to the door

Gather your forces to your side
Gather your strength for what’s to come
