Boy Candy (CBGB w/gregd)

[Explicit]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Debbie Harry meets Lou Reed and does him up against the wall while Gang of Four plays in the background.

Greg did all the music and production. He rules!

The first song I've ever posted here with an explicit label on it. Damn punks!

Lyrics
Old raincoat,
dead hairdo,
a pocket full of rubbers
and a box of cigarettes,
last night's party running down her face,
lost one of her stilettos.

Been raining for an hour,
doesn't really matter.
It's the story of her life.
No one in this town,
uses a fucking umbrella.

Boy candy,
boy candy
boy candy
body candy,
chew her up
and spit her out
but save the paper
for later

Her roomate Benny,
he's a dancer,
looks in the mirror every day,
takes the measure of his body,
watches his face turning gray.

Boy candy
boy candy
boy candy
boy candy
chew him up
and spit him out
but save the paper
for later.

(instrumental bridge)

CHORUS

And I'm walking on
some kind of street like that,
cracks in the pavement
waiting to pull
me down to the ground.

awww why
Why the F bomb....With all the talent you have, I would never have thought you needed to go there. I just hate it when we can't think of something more creative than that word to put in a song, or use period. I'm sure everyone will probably love it, so what do I know? All the best to you.

why NOT the F bomb?
It's just a word. Don't give it any more power than that by making it so. Sometimes, it's the only word that works.

Thanks, Gail
First Gail, let me thank you for being honest in your reaction to the song. I consider you a musical friend and I really want to make it clear that I don't see what you said as anything negative towards me, but as a sign that you feel comfortable enough with me to speak your mind. Thanks for that.

I did consciously choose to use that word and it was a creative choice, not that I had run out of ideas. It was actually something that I considered carefully, because I know that it's a powerful word and has the power to disrupt the flow of the lyrics and the listening experience. It's kind of like the cayenne pepper of words. You really only want to use it sparingly and in a considered way.

I chose to use it because these characters are just plain not "gosh darn" kinds of people and it's a word that would be used freely in their world and a word that I chose to use to convey the disappointment, anger and disgust of the character in the first verse. Another reason I chose that expletive in particular, rather than a different one, was because of the assonance created with the U in fucking and the U in umbrella. Musically, it sounded good.

Thank you Lisa
I appreciate your response. To be honest, If I had thought a little longer I probably would not have replied at all and you would have never known my opinion one way or another. I have always enjoyed your music and this was just more shock value than I cared to listen to. I should have paid attention to the explicit warning that I somehow missed. I am old fashioned in the sense that I consider cussing such a waste of time and the nastier the word is, the more I detest it. That one word is my absolute least favorite that I feel is very over rated and entirely over used! You are so right in knowing that it was not a personal remark towards you, only that I was disappointed that it was used. All of this is only my opinion just like you have yours...That is what makes the world go around. I still love your music, that has not changed.

I love VU and I had a very, very bad cold (which is STILL lingering) for most of the week before the deadline and I was really struggling. Thank goodness for Lou and his example. If it weren't for me feeling I could copy his vocal stylin's, I'd have been dead in the water because I had no voice this week.

Nice
I personally dont mind you using the words 'fucking umbrella' in your song and I don't think that just because you are talented it should preclude you from using language in any form at all. The word 'fuck' in a song can be as musical and creative as any other (or as non musical and non creative depending on the perpetrator)

I found this to be an interesting track musically and vocally and it seems to be a bit of a departure for you.

Is there more stuff like this on the horizon?

Ta, Bryn
It was a departure for me, but I have wanted to do something like this for a long time. Debbie Harry is a massive heroine of mine and has been since I was a little girl. So, doing this song was very fulfilling for me, though I do so wish I hadn't had a cold at the time. Greg's a wonderful musician and I'd definitely work with him again one day. That'd be swell.

Lisa, great track. Creative, edgy, and fits the challenge perfectly. Kudo's to you both.

I thought your vocal captured that sullen, street smart, give a f*ck attitude, in a big way.

Greg: the backing tracks are waaaay cool. The dissonant jazzy piano and thrash guitars just go unbelievable well together. Completely different, and I love it.

Time stops...
...I'm in a bus station, rainy crappy grey day with watercolor smears on the dirty glass, warming myself with a cup of bad coffee when I see her walking by outside for just a moment. Cheap raincoat. Dead hair. Nobody glances at her - she might as well be part of the sidewalk, the buildings, the stained walls with cheap fliers decorated with garish images of nobody punk bands...

And I think... she has a mouth that could sing bitter words with such poetic sweetness that a single, elegant profanity would pass for a lover's kiss.

And then she's gone... And my coffee tastes even worse.
Rebsie said 570 days ago (May 5th, 2008)
Nice work
Great collab chaps! The music bed is dark and unsettling in all the right ways and the vocal flows into all the cracks and crevices. Excellent lyrics and solid performances all round.

I second what Bryn says about the use of the word "fucking". Such words exist to give a specific nuance of expression and are as valid a part of the language as any other word. It's used here in an appropriate context and does exactly what it's meant to do.

Like the edgy quality you captured with both the lyrics and the both punctual and sporadic drum hits. The guitar/piano sound has a Steely Dan flavor to it of sorts.

Nice combinations bring this song a unique but reminiscent toughness made effective with your soft pleasant voice.

So different from the other stuff I've heard of yours, and I like that you're going for it! The music is great! I had to count it off to see if it was in 5/4 time, but it's not. It's just a very interesting 4/4. Way cool and complex rhythm and instrumentation.

Cool voice from Lisa, as usual, and I like Greg's interesting musical backing... sometimes it feels jangly and sometimes super smooth. It's new territory as backing music for Lisa. What a great collaboration
there's a wonderful contrast and harmony all at the same time. Lisa - your voice / performance of the song is really spot on for this sort of thing and greg's arrangement / playing is the perfect blend of smarty pants punk jazz. This is such an authentic NY Lower East Side avant garde sound - it's just great. Well done. Maybe more suited to the Mudd Club than CBGB - but I'm not complaining.

Love the picture the lyrics paint (more of a movie, actually...) and the vocal performance is perfect - a little vampish, a little cynical, a little rebellious. Sweet. You know
I was kind of forced into the spoken thing because my voice was really shredded, but I think it did end up working with Greg's music. It is true that this one is darker than what I usually do and I think that's what people must mean when they've been saying it's a change of pace for me, since I've never been much of a belter, anyway.

Thanks Allen!

Cool description. You even sounded like Debbie Harry at points here.

Maybe on purpose or maybe not, but the way the drums are mixed in here, making it clear to the listener that this is not real drums is the cool way to do them. Trying to make boxed midi drums sound like real seldom works. Good choice!

I can dig the laid back way you sing this Lisa. Suits the rough edge of the song and you sound confident.

Very good lyrics to match the rock'n roll touch in the guitars and overall feel of this tune.

The Peanut Gallery's Two Cents
I liked your lyrics especially "last night's party running down her face." and the pocket full of rubbers and box of cigarettes.

In your arrangement had you thought about a simple beat and guitar? It seemed to me that a simpler arrangement would have made the lyrics and your vocal stand out more which in turn would have emphasized the desperation of the narrator. Something more like Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side." Seems as though you could have built to a musical climax by starting slower and simpler and ending with the accented guitar and drums.

It is still a fine effort.

Sweet as candy.
I enjoy songs that contain 'fuck' even those with basic lyrics that go along the lines of 'fuck,fuck.fuck.fuckitty fuck' - providing the melody has sufficient intrigue and singability and this wee choon is no exception. As has been mentioned the Steelyesque quality in the music together with the breathy delivery sure hits the spot. A quality listen and a sexy vibe.

To a certain extent it put me in mind of Pretty Girls Make Graves. One of my favourite bands. I see comments about the use of the F word. I've no idea why this word is considered so bad. ...so, so late on this! But it's worth the wait. Genuinely a great track and fantastic to hear you going out on a limb like this. I love it from start to finish; the fidgety drums, the hopelessly out of time guitar, the trebly sound mix, the sexy vocal. Straight off a Blondie rehearsal studio cassette. Great. And coming, as I do, from northern England, where swearing is actively encouraged (if not compulsary) - the more swearing the better, as far as I'm concerned:-)) Love it!

F* yeh!
I'm not exactly sure how to articulate this, but bare with me... Sometimes I come across MacJams songs that seem to transcend the posting of songs on a Macintosh-made music sharing website. This is one of them. The sound, the style, the concept - it just strikes me as being a little "more" than I would normally find here. Maybe it's the edginess, or the crazy arrangement, but it's exciting to listen to songs like this.

Cool lyrics, Lisa. I love "last night's party running down her face". Very nice. And your breathy vocals are perfect against that arrangement. Great work.
