Lyrics
Whatever Works
There's a kid jumpin up and down with a stick in his hand
he’s gonna poke an eye out and he doesn’t understand
Make the best of “it”, but what “it” is he don’t know
what makes it go around, what floats that boat?
It’s all a jumble, He scratches his head
He’s followin’ his compulsion and this is where it led...
Whatever Works for You Works for Me...

I’m seated with the artistes at a table off to the side
all want to sell out but nobody wants to buy
in the clamor for justice, for their voices to be heard
all this noise comes down to one word
is it yea or nay, as the dogs must be fed
let’s break for dinner, so voted Fred...
Whatever Works for You Works for Me...

Definitely maybe where there’s a will there’s a way
when confronted by worry,
in this thought,there’s some cachet

Buddha was sittin in the shade of the baobab tree
relaxin and ruminating sippin on a long island ice tea
lookin at the people there all holding out their hands
all strainin’ their ears for somethin to understand
He cleared his throat and raised his head
in a voice that poured out like water this is what he said
Whatever Works for You Works for Me...

This is Definitely Working
The Vibe is definitely working for me.
The Tone and Character of the vocal performance is working for me.
The stories in the lyrics are working for me.
And I am definitely feeling the phrase:
"Buddha was sittin in the shade of the baobab tree
relaxin and ruminating sippin on a long island ice tea"
That is sooo working for me.

This song is Working For Me!"

So cool...love the harmonica in the background. Great lyrics. Nice low-key groove and your voice is perfect. Fun little tune. I really like the harmonies too. Thanks!

It works for me.
There's a slow, relentless built up to this song which is wonderfully hypnotic, and engaging.

Every
element of a fine blues tune is here, well done. Love the bursts of harp on the lazy backbeat. Wow so much more. Thanks, Russ

Authentic
Great line:

"I%u2019m seated with the artistes at a table off to the side
all want to sell out but nobody wants to buy."

I can related to that. You always include something that makes me think, that makes me nod or shake my head or smile or sigh. In your quiet confident pacing, you're able to say so many things without ever posing or pretending; everything remains so authentic, honest. Was this live, or is that a virtually sampled crowd? If its live, how did you filter out the crowd and weave in MIDI instruments? If its a virtual crowd, is it one more layer of irony? (I always imagine you are thinking of many layers underneath your deceptively simple exterior.)

Busted! That is a virtual crowd! This was a crowd favorite when I used to do it live in 1995-98, and I was going for a sound that was sort of like what I used to do when I used to gig a lot at coffeehouses like Club Passim, but up-to-dated with a sound like what I would do if I played this with my buddies in Session Americana now. http://www.sessionamericana.com/ There is one laugh in the end sample that sounds just like my friend Sean Staples, and always when we were playing together, he would laugh like that when we finished one of my songs. I do intend this song to be fun for people to listen to and I wanted it to be clear that was the intention.
Most of the instruments are real instruments here, I think the drums are Drums on Demand loops, but the rest is real instruments in my one-man band multitrack way.

and also
I thought of this as sort of a failed audition for CBGBs, like I was an actual Country-BlueGrass and Blues player from right out of the sticks that thought it might be appropriate for me to try and play at a club in the big city named after my favorite music, and the laughter is how inappropriate a place a rube like me found myself in, but all in good fun, since it's fund to laugh at a rube.

Works for me!
Makes me think of Bruce Cockburn lyrically - a good thing. Very smooth delivery, beautiful production, and that one man band is certainly working well together.

Another great post Jim.

Cheers from Oz,
