Jack:
I came up with the chords and melody about three years ago. When Rich pulled up stakes at MJ (of course he returned... heheh), I decided to pull out the song sketch and write some lyrics to capture something of what I thought was going on for him. Rich then added some more lyrics, including those in the bridge, and then Warren jumped in with some lines that became verse 5. This is a song for Richard (he makes it his own with his energy and vocals for sure)... kind of his song, his time. that being said, it's a song for anyone who has yearned to break loose from the past and chart a new course.
And special thanks to the Neil "jiguma" Porter for sitting in with his bass guitar. It was worth the cost of the round trip airfare to have him with us in studio... ;) , even if he did charge extra for the modulation. ;) ;)
Jack: music, lyrics, vocals, rhythm guitar
Richard: lyrics, vocals, harmonica, percussion (loops), mixing
Warren Smith: lyrics, solo guitar
Neil Porter: bass guitar

Lyrics
Hittin' the Road
v1 - Jack:
I'm packing my bags, grabbing my hat. I'm hitting the road.
I'm leaving behind my second thoughts. I'm dropping the load.
Got my guitar. I've got my songs. Ready to roll.
I'm Hitting the Road!
v2 - Rich:
Some say think twice, better get back, wouldn't be right.
Just dream a dream but don't step out, stay out of sight.
I'm telling you now I'm making my way, shining a light.
I'm Hitting the Road!
[bridge]
Jack & Rich:
Comes a time to grab the wheel,
turn the key, make it start.
My timing's set, this moment's real.
A new song straight from my heart!
[Instrumental]
v3 - Rich:
I'm taking a chance, spinning the wheel, throwing the dice.
I'm telling a tale, prayin' a prayer, makin' it nice.
I'm gettin' in tune, thinking it once, singing it twice.
I'm hittin' the road!
[bridge] – Jack & Rich
v4 - Jack:
I'm gearing it up, rarin' to go, reading the signs.
No stick in the mud, no rock in the road gonna break my spine.
I'm takin' the highway, doing it my way, draggin' the line.
I'm hittin' the road! .... (Modulation to Key of E)
v5 - Rich:
I'm chasing rainbows, following dreams, I'm going for broke
Some rain might fall, four winds may blow, that ain't no joke
Oh, can't you see, I gotta be free, that's why for me
I'm hitting the road!
