Description
This is a song written by my 12 year old son Ryan who is learning guitar. The drums are done by his good friend Kody.

This is the first time really they've played together and they hashed out this short little song.

Wish I was this good when I was 12! I added the bass for them and did a little clean up on the guitar and drums.

It's a short simple little song but the start of hopefully a long relationship in creating music for the both of them.

They call their band "The Kodans"

I wish them lots of luck. I plan to record more of their stuff as they progress. This is just the very first one.

the technology these days! i wish i was able to capture some of my first songs and first bands on tape/hd/whatever. excellent first effort. love the simple mix, gave it an almost beatles-esque vibe. keep at it guys! get a bass player and singer and start making some noise! :)

Mr Parsecs!
You made Ryan and Kody's day! You should have seen them running around here saying, "Some one commented!!!"

Thanks so much for the support! I think I will create a profile for Ryan and start posting his stuff under his own "label" so to speak.

He has a ways to go but considering how quickly they put that little piece together I think soon I'll be asking him for advice on tracks!

Hey Vic!
Thanks so much for stopping in, listening and commenting! Like I said above, you made their day!

Ryan was poking around on this page and clicked on your name, went to your page with all your guitars and he almost fell over backwards! He came running upstairs yelling "Dad this one guy that commented on our song has like 200 guitars!"

You blew him away. I said, Ryan, go listen to some of Vic's music. He is one of the truly great masters here on MJ. So he started to poke around your works and I think he got some ideas... We might have the Vic Holman Imitation Sound project underway soon!!!

And my friend, I would bet that plastic guitar created some amazing riffs in your able hands! Wish we had some old recordings of Vic at 12 with his plastic guitar! What a trip that would be!

i love that father, son and friend vibe. you're a lucky man. my daughter isn't even 2, but we sit down and have music time every day at the piano (she really likes a waltz). your son will treasure this forever. thanks for posting.

Hi Micheal
Thanks so much for coming on in and leaving a note!

I think Ryan and Kody had a ball with this and if it gives them even one little bit of resolve to move forward then it is worth every second.

Now you and your daughter... wow... I'm a sucker for the female voice so I hope some day we hear a father/daughter vocal. We all know about the Micheal2 vocals!

I'm glad to hear you are starting her so early. Keep it up!

Ya I was pretty amazed at how quickly they created this little song. Ryan wrote the cords and they worked a couple hours and then laid it down live!

Thanks Russ...
Well over the last year I taught him stairway to heaven, house of the rising son and helped with a few other chords and breaks. He built this all on his own.

He found out his friend Kody played pretty good drums and they played together for about an hour then laid this down, 1 take.

I need to work with him more on strum technique, variations for bridges and choruses, etc... but still this is better than I could have done for 12 years old and less than a year of guitar!

Ya I plan to keep nudging them along. I would like nothing more than to have a teen band jamming away in the house on the weekends.

It would drive my wife nuts but what the heck? Soon college and then it will be sorta quiet.

lovely to hear this Marc,
It's great to watch and listen to things forming. The Kodans, - this is a sort of Doo Wop group type name I think - probably 'cos it reminds me of the Kodaks, a band from your side of the pond famous in 1958 for -Runaround Baby -[ not a hit as far as I remember but a great single that I really loved and still have! - well it's time for the Kodans to try now and I wish them all the best. You never know they could be the band that takes over where the Beatles left off. Hope they'll do one of my songs.

Best wishes,

John.

Hey John
Thanks so much for the listen and support. The boys are thrilled. They came up with the tune, the name, the drums completely 100% them.

I added the bass to give it a little background but tried hard not to get too fancy as I wanted them in the fore front.

Hi Mr. Gold!
Well I will encourage them for sure. My best years were the band years. Playing guitar and piano for hours on end. I had little time for anything else. I could wish a lot worse for Ryan and Kody!

That is a sign of old age and you are not supposed to have that yet!!! :)

Perhaps in your case too much great music in the head so you are a bit overloaded.

Thanks for giving the guys encouragement. I'm gonna keep nudging them along.

Tell your son Ryan and his drummer friend Kody they have ptotential! Tell them to keep it up, and never give up and I'll be listening here and there. The mix is simple and straightfoward, they need to build it into something to reach a climax and then come back down . . . but they're onto something here!
MarkHolbrook said 479 days ago (August 4th, 2008)
Thanks PG!
Ya I will keep encouraging the boys along. I think with some work they could really be a cool little teen band!

i can remember
being 12, wishing i could do more than record into an old cassette recorder. this is the kind of thing that makes parents believe in it all being worth it. late nights up sick with them, teething, first heartbreaks, puberty, and them growing to be young adults. all totally worth it.
from a production standpoint, the song needs vocals. maybe a female? give the group some spice?
i liked where they are going with the tune. it is catchy, and has pre-teen angst and intensity...
loved it.

You bet!
This is what makes it worth it!

The song needs a lot. They know it. This was just a first hack and I think they know that a singer, a bass, perhaps another guitar and LOTS of practice are in the works.

Thanks for coming by and commenting! All this activity makes the boys very proud!
