Transgenre Express #1

Description
This mix an experiment in mixing things, genre-wise, hence the title of the tune.

I noticed (and listened to) morning Light's 'The Rush of Falling Water' and realised that I was working on similar lines, trying to come up with something a little different whilst using my new, more powerful laptop. This is one of the fifteen or so takes that I've completed in roughly 35 hours.

The mix is all done in one take and involves MIDI and algorithmic processes coupled with effects to glue all of the parts together.

Hopefully another one or two takes will materialise on here later in the week.

Please let me know what you think.

Very impressive...i am very interested in your "algorithmic processes", but without understanding mentally, I think I have felt the experience..... this WHOLE song has incredible continuity, and movement, (great title):) , and the best part is that this movement flows within itself. Such a great mix that you can call it "Express" because of its continuity! Thank You for sharing this!

Hi ML......
Thnks for your lovely feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts.

I'm putting an article (or two) up on the net for people who wish to see how I go about doing some of my mixes. The first one will not explain the algorithmic side of things but another one just might!!

One alternate way to describe an algorithmic-type example would be to enter all the notes for a phrase of music, then use these notes to trigger a soft synth, so as to basically use the notes as a springboard and then play with the settings on the soft synth to make something come out that is so different to the original theme that you would think it was something else if you didn't know the truth. The original notes would be acting as the 'algorithm' for the newly-developed theme.

Take care.

Hi Bryn....
When I put something together such as this I start with the same silence as always, waiting for some idea or reaction to spark something off for me to work at. This one came out of thinking about, of all things, Bohemian Rhapsody, as a concept piece, and the effect it had on me at the time. (I saw Queen live in Sheffield when the came on their only visit).

Then I coupled the idea with the soft synths and effects that I have currently installed on my new toy, and gradually the piece came together. I then went through my algorithms to see what came out with each combination. This particular one was my own favourite, hence it was the first one uploaded.

The main, underlying them of this was the occasional rhythm sequence that kicked in. This was done via a new free ROMpler (CMplayer) that I had just installed. It is free with the Computer Music magazine and is one of their regular freebies. The MIDI-out was fed to this plugin and what you hear is what came out.

The differing genres all seemed, from one point of view, to melt together (to me).

Take care.

Unmaterialize this mate...
Resist the solidified state - stay in your nether-genrefication!

Hi Daniel.......
I don't think that I could ever get locked into one thing..... I enjoy fluidity. Another reason why things slowly evolve with me is that I forget!!

It's good to hear from you again.

Take care.
