Description:
Age and Greg consented to let me have my way with their dark and excellent song (which can be heard here), and I have done so.
This is really not finished, but my ambitions far exceeded my ability. So, I thought I'd go ahead and post it because by the time I'm able to write the lush Barry White-esque string section I can hear in my head, the continents will have drifted back together..... (Maybe by then I will have replaced the out-of-the-box drum and bass loops with something a little less standard, as well).
Thank you, Age and Greg. I....er.....hope you like it.

Lyrics:
-KNIFE'S EDGE-by Sons of Hypnos
on knife's edge, shivering
lose yourself in the toxin
chrome death box delivery
till the whole world is empty
on knife's edge tonight
out on the steel where the blade gleams bright
chloroformed and euthanized
lay your pennies on his eyes
(you can try to run, you can try to hide)
in the clutch where madness burns
grinding gears the castles turn
velvet touch techniques learned
cruel devices nothings earned
on knife's edge tonight
out on the steel where the blade gleams bright
chloroformed and euthanized
lay your pennies on his eyes
(you can try to run, you can try to hide) X2
once dead and trapped inside, now awake and fully alive X4
(you can try to run, you can try to hide) X2
it's gonna getcha X14
it's gonna...
on knife's edge, shivering
lose yourself in the toxin
chrome death box delivery
till the whole world is empty
on knife's edge tonight
out on the steel where the blade gleams bright
chloroformed and euthanized
lay your pennies on his eyes
(you can try to run, you can try to hide) X4
on knife's edge tonight X4

This is my favorite entry to the contest !
Fabulous!
sonnyjim
I thank you.
BTW, nice to see you back: I was very disappointed when you deleted all your strange songs not long after you'd started posting here. I will be stopping by.
Best,

This is very nice entry. A lot, but not too much, going on.
Great production and overall sound.

i give this a BIG thumbs up! a very different interpretation, yet still capturing the feel of the original.....now THIS is how a cover should be done! true to the original, yet smothered in your own style and flavor! bravo my friend, i for one feel as you have done us proud...thank you!
sincerely,
age
p.s. fav'd and downloaded!!!
sonnyjim
I'm relieved to hear it!
The song is, of course, HUGE; and Greg's 'take-no-prisoners' vocals are unbeatable, so I decided to go in the other direction......
Glad you like it. It was a real pleasure to cover your song.

This is very cool. I'm not familiar with the original, but I'll be checking it out after this out. I like the vocal on this a lot, especially the overlapping voices. Great lyrics - kudos to ageofthedeathtree, and brilliantly performed. Great keyboard arepggio, and nice sound on those chords. Now you mention Barry White strings, I'm dying to hear them! Very cool. Nicely done. If you do more with it, I'd love to hear it. Peace.
sonnyjim
Veddy difficult for me, those strings; veddy time-consuming, too.
Thank you for your kind words. I will certainly let you know if something else happens to this one.
Best,
Feter

This is good. Really good. The bassline is catchy and the singing is nice. Great job. Wow (did I already say that?). All around solid.
egobandit
do you get that strange 70s cop show synth. I like the vocals sounds like a bunch of peopletook turns saying try to run excellent execution off composition. nice git at the end Tops in my book!

I used the clavinet instrument plugin in Logic, but you can download a free AU clav plugin here:

And I have to confess that the 'guitar' at the end is me screaming and whistling into a mic run through an amp emulator....... Hope you're not too disappointed!
Thanks for the props, Tim; they make it all worthwhile.
Best,

your voice reminds me a bit of the great Robert Wyatt from Soft Machine. You really did a great job with this - please excuse comparisons - but they are all faves of mine. There's a little TV on the Radio and Gorillaz working here too. The use of electronics and analogue together is so sweet - and the vocal tweaks are excellent.
sonnyjim
Simply put, I love Robert Wyatt. He's consistently and hugely creative, and does it all with the thinnest of natural gifts(!); if I can generate even a little similar warmth, I am happy. Have you heard his "Cuckooland"? Just brilliant.
Thank you very much for the listen and the kind words, Kevin.

Consider me grooved to pieces. The Motown smoothness, the funky-assed klav, the walking basslines, the smoother than my baby's-bottom Pips harmonies and raise your hands gospel shouts performed by aliens. What an awesome entry into the challenge, you are always up-ing the bar my friend.

Thank you very much. This one was fun to do. I think it needs some adjustments beyond what I am able to do. I really wanted that first part to sound all thick and smoove and Motown-y; and then the gospel part to sound like it was recorded in a cinderblock room in Alabama. Perhaps you know someone who has those production skills....?

by the depth of the mix and performance. The tribal drive to this and the vocal harmonies are great. That clavinet puts just the right amount of funk in there.
PickQuickRecords
What a great rendition of the original. Sounds like you guys planned this one from the start.
Diggin' it.

this is a great tune
I too hear some drums that aren't there...
there is a good drummer on icomp you could hook up with, I'll send you his link if you want.
The groove is very happening regardless and when you turned up the interest with that first keyboard solo, man the drums didn't matter.
I was groovin on the two solos, BIG time! Nice touches.
The vocal parts are very creative and hip.
You have so many sides to you voice and you displayed them nicely mixing it up and peaking interest.
I like this tune
gonna keep it on my chain
peace out

overlapping chorus; is that all you? Wild ride in the amusement park called life. Really quite unique. Enjoyed the song and the performance. Thanks.
