Description
This is another really old song from a cassette. This one was recorded in a real studio called My Other Hat Studio by Brian Doser, on 2" reel-to-reel tape, but we only recorded on one inch of it so we could turn it over and record the other 8 tracks on the other side of it. The drums were played by Phil Antoniades, but after I recorded the acoustic guitar track not to a click track, so Phil did a great job following me. I overdubbed the electric slide guitar using a little tiny battery operated amp and a MXR Blue Box pedal. There is no bass.
I released this as cassette-only at the time, and after I had released one version of it, my brother Albert decided he could remix it to make it sound better, and this is his remix, but of all the songs, this one is the least changed from the original mix.
I recorded this into my Mac and cleaned it up a little with Sound Soap and Peak and here it is, another from the archives circa 1994-1995.

Making "do" = paying dues
Jim, Great song. The description is like a big Easter egg - "only" 1" tape (beats our old cassette multitrakers by about 5/8").... the "amp" you used for slide... drummer working with non-clicked tracks...

Shows that talent is 95% human, 5% gear.

Great vocals
The singing is great, and really starts cooking inn the second half.

Guitar rolls along with a smooth purpose and complements the vox nicely.

nice
some nice things in here jim....the first 60 seconds are heaven...you can feel the un-digital in this.

I gotta say tho...the slide part has some real intonation problems that distracted from the listen. I think the track looses it appeal with the introduction of the uber distorted guitar at the end...maybe one track of guitar there instead of two. But for my money, leave that slide part out all together. You can tell you recorded it thru a tiny amp...the sound is tiny and irritating.

other than that...i really like this alot. The vocal is heartfelt and passionate, very truthful...acoustic guitar was magnificent....and the drum track is outstanding....since i started recording my band, i have listened a lot more to the drum sounds on every cd i listen to....this drum track was not only very well played, it was recorded very well indeed.

overall a great song, great recording....

thanks for the listen

Thanks!
Well I can't remix it, as I don't have a 2" tape machine or an ADAT machine (when my brother Albert remixed it, he had me transfer the 2" tape to ADAT). So it sort of is what it is as Belichek would say. I cringe a little bit at the slide parts. I didn't really have that much of a hand in mixing this version and I must admit I wasn't that happy with it when I got it from my brother, but hey he's my brother so what can I say. I don't mind the thin transistor sound of the electric, I wasn't trying to imitate a big guitar, but more like flies buzzing, but using both tracks was Albert's idea. This one's filed under history; there's some catchiness to the melody and words and a sort of loose limbed performance, but there's definitely not a lot of perfection to be found here. I'm okay with that. Thanks for your perceptive comments!

what a wonderful song...
I've been listening around a bit more recently and as usual you come across a lot of good music around here, but the songwriting on this song is quite outstanding. Feels totally natural and flows extremely well. And when listening more carefully, the individual parts (especially the accoustic guitar riff and drums) reveal themselves as just being full of fresh, creative energy, blending perfectly. Sure the mix/recording could maybe be cleaned up a little bit, but reading the description it's remarkable that the timing of all the instruments is near perfect. Besides a good song is a good song and this one sounds genuine and really touches you. Like somebody said, wouldn't change a thing. Is that you singing?!

I sung the thing, I must admit. Thanks for the comment. I really should transcribe the words, as there's some funny lines in this.

What a great piece of writing. Both the lyrics and the music stand out. I love the way this flows. Some fantastic, subtle chord change surprises. Good on you for digitalizing it!
