Gentle Breezes

Description
This is a simple reverie that was written for clarinet, flute and harp. It actually kind of reminds me of phone waiting music. Still, while it may not have much of a 'line' for straight listening, it would be good for background music, I think. I'm working on trying to complete at least one piece every fortnight, so we'll see how that works to get me 'jump started' on completing compositions.

it is gentle...
but I don't hear "on-hold" music, it has more character than that. Perhaps the clarinet and flute melodies are too similar to be counter-melodies to each other in spots, they sometimes sound like they're competing for the main melody line... you may want to make one more subordinate while the other soars over it (drop to 1/2 notes and lower or higher octave than the main melody in the other instrument, for example?) But there were just a few spots where that happened, mostly it is a very gentle touching piece. I really like it!

Drakonis

Hi, Drak!
Thanks for listening, and for your tips, which are very helpful. I probably should do a few tweaks with volume and 'breathing' yet on this. Actually, I'm looking at doing another clarinet, bassoon, guitar setting of it - in the process actually - to provide our little family group with some more repertoire. Some of the ideas you posed will be integrated in that setting, for sure. I appreciate your careful listening and gracious sharing of musical ideas!

Hi Kristy
very serene melody. I like the conversation between the flute and clarinete. The warm guitar background is beautiful.

Oh, so gentle
Kristy Jo,
I think I'd actually enjoy waiting on hold if I could listen to this gentle little composition!!! I agree with Eduard about the competition between the solo instruments in that neither really gets to shine as the star. Since both are solo instruments (usually), that makes it difficult for one to take a melody. You might consider just using one of them. In my head I am hearing an alto flute...with a bed of strings to lie in. The harp is simply beautiful and you play it with such restraint, never letting it get too flowery. ... And I love "fortnight," a word from the (way) past that is as quaint as it is valuable. Good luck on writing so often. The blank page is always our greatest fear.
Peace.
Paul

Paul -
Your comments are always valuable to me. I am taking this song in a different direction, using clarinet, bassoon & guitar, so I'll use your suggestions as I work on that. I am going to continue to use the word fortnight, and hope it catches on, since it is so much more elegant and efficient than 'every couple of weeks' or 'twice a month'. :)

Gentle
Very enjoyable piece. I particularly like the way you work the flute and clarinet lines.

A piece every fortnight. I will be looking forward to hearing from you more often then :)

Thanks
Bill

Now, now...
...let's not knock phone waiting music, Kristy. This would make me very, very upset when the person I'm waiting for cut in to answer the call...

I used to play the clarinet. Wonderful sound.

Lovely piece. Really lovely.

Well, if this was on someone's phone...
...I'd say, "Hey, put me back on hold for a couple minutes...I'm not done listening..."

You have a gift for parts and space, I think, kristyjo... When I win a huge lottery prize, I'm going to send you best, most totally realistic orchestral instruments samples on the market...I think that the writing would sound its best if all the air and subtlety and grit was in there in the intertwining lines...

Even so, this sounds very good indeed...

Ed

Terrific
texture in the tonalities of all the instruments it seems. They play all together quite well. Like a pretty sunrise.
Enjoy the harp sound and how it sets a great structure for the flute etc. That would be terrific for the classical guitar as well.

Way to Go !

The sound is very good and the melody would be a great "on the road again" companion with a medieval storytelling...
