Description
This past August, as I walked around the State Fair, wondering which deep-fried delicacy I would try next, the germ of this song came into my head, emerging from nowhere. If you're not familiar with State Fairs, just imagine tens of thousands of people walking around all day pulling their kids behind them in wagons, eating delicious but coronary-inducing food on a stick, listening to music, marveling at giant pumpkins and humongous pigs, going on head-spinning rides (because your kids dare you to), and watching fireworks - all in the sticky heat of late Summer. It's more fun than it sounds, actually. How all that led to this, I'll never know. But there it is.

It took a while to mould it into this, but one thing I knew it needed early on was a roof-lifting guitar solo, the kind that I can't really do! Then Micheal and I were talking about working on something, and a bell went off in my head. A matter of a couple of days later (man, that guy works fast!) I got this solo back, and it knocked my socks off. What excited me most about it (apart from the beautifully searing tone, the rocking dynamics, and the magnificent playing!) was the fact that it was exactly what I had in mind. Now, that's magic!

Thanks, again, Mike for doing this, and kudos. As I knew you would, you knocked it out of the park.

Enjoy.

Peace.

David

Lyrics
Trapdoor

I don’t know how it started but I ended up standing
At the foot of a staircase in the back of my room
I ascended with caution to the star-speckled ceiling
I opened the trap door and climbed out of my life

I found myself standing on the roof of my world
On a street in a city where I’d never been
And I was surrounded by a pitiful chorus singing
‘This is the life’
As they wandered dumbfounded by sorrow and pain

The sky was an answer and my hand was a key
And the faces were questions and all looking at me
I laid in the penthouse and I lied in the street
Ignoring the old ones as they cried

Maybe you know what I mean when I say
Man, I think I’ve seen the road that lies ahead
And maybe it’s an everyday parade to you
But I’ve gotta say it almost wrecked my head

Well there might be a star in the palm of my hand
A spirit in dreamtime making a man
There might be a turtle swimming through space
A world on his back and a smile on his face
A chorus of angels dreaming of sin
Dancing a jig on the head of a pin
There might be an old man counting us down
Or maybe just counting us out
And maybe the stars are just holes in the sky
The rest of the world just a ghost in your eye
And maybe the mind is a fever gone wild
A chemical ego on trial
Well, I stood on the roof in the cold light of noon
Counting the stars and the suns and the moons
And I suddenly knew I was ready to go
‘Cos honey I’d rather not know

I descended with caution and I got my feet on the floor
I gathered my spirits and I walked to the door
And I found myself standing in the heart of my world
On a street in a city where I’ve never been

You are way too kind, but I'm happy you like it! I think 'soaring' is a good word to describe the solo! Thanks for checking this one out. I really enjoyed your latest punk track - very cool! Cheers. Peace.

setting traps
very nicely done gents. of course nicely recorded.

what makes this really cool that it has shades of Ziggy & the Spiders from Mars, like lady stardust, etc. nice blend of acoustics and electric guitars.

Which brings up the question, was Mike wearing platform shoes while recording the solo?

Well...not quite gentlemen...
The truth of the matter is that I gave my platform shoes to the Salvation Army years ago. However, I WAS standing on tiptoe while playing so you were close! lol

Peace!

Ha ha!
You kept my solo but misspelled my name! Micheal NOT Michael (he's that other guy...)! lol

What a beautiful tune David. I still can't figure out why you chose me for the solo. NEVERTHELESS I am both proud and grateful to have played even a small part in this one.

Wonderful lyrics delivered with conviction and style. One of your very best my friend! LOVE IT!

Be well!
dajama said 406 days ago (October 16th, 2008)
Oops!
Sorry about the misspelling! Duly noted and corrected. Thanks for the nod on the vocals; I'm very happy you enjoyed the song. As for why I thought of you for the solo, I think the reason is there for all to hear! Just what the song needed, my friend, and you nailed it. You rock. Thanks again, man. Peace.

Absolutely unbelievable David
This is a fantastic (no pun) song. Great lyrics, very well sung, and full if imagery and imagination.

And you are right about Micheal's guitar part, he did hit it out of the park, as did you with the rest of the backtracks. The mix is spot on and the production is perfect as well.

This one goes straight to the iPod my friend, it's gonna be a classic Rock song one of these days. It already is for me.

Bravo to both of you for a job very, very well done.
Be well and be cool, guys

Maybe not, but if people enjoy it, then I'm happy. That solo is rather cool, isn't it? Thanks for checking this out, my friend. Much appreciated as always. Cheers. Peace.

Great sound
Loved how the guitars came to life. And the build up was perfect. I can hear the Bowie/Lennon influence.

Solo had great emotion.

Super job,

Dave

Glad you enjoyed this one. I'm happy you liked the build-up; in one its earliest incarnations, the song just kicked in and kept going, but I realized I've been doing a lot of those lately, so I went for a different approach. Emotion in the solo - I think you've put your finger on it. Feeling combined with style - what else could you ask for?! Thanks for checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

great
I was expecting big things when I saw that two of my favourite Macjammers had collaborated.
No disapointment! It's a superbly crafted recording. I can't even find the smallest thing to nit pick - it's so good and then some! Lyrics, singing, playing and production are all excellent. That trade mark acoustic sound and the searing lead sound great.
Regards
Steve

Great work you two... I like the unusual but catchy song structure, sort of breathless but apropos... great guitar work, cool lyrics, well mixed and beautifully sung! Love those thought-provoking lyrics.

Really happy you stopped by to check this out, and glad you like it. The structure is a little different from my normal approach (which can be very normal!) but I resisted the temptation to make it more standard, and I'm glad I did; it's encouraging that you think it worked. Thanks again for listening - much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

I love your voice, David.
What poetic lyrics. I was hearing Harry Chapin a bit. Oh and Michael Wark has a way with that guitar. So very enjoyable. I Love this place and you two are geniuses. I'll have to listen several times more. It seems I am calling it FolkyRock. Rockabilly? Genuinely a worthy. song. Excellent. Thanks for working so well together.
Thanks. :)
