Let 'Em Fly

Description
This is another really old song from my Bucket tape. A song of hope, I guess. This shows my Bruce Cockburn influence here mostly in the lyrics, and it was my attempt to write a story song but it turns into my typical metaphysical meditation. I think there's just one track of guitar but it sounds like 2. My friend Brian Doser recorded this and I could swear there was just one guitar part, and I think it's probably due to Brian's creative mic placement and the sound of his studio. I played the acoustic guitar and bass, Phil Antoniades plays the great drums, and the dear departed Alexis Gewertz Shepard sings the wonderful harmony part. I miss Alexis a lot but it's great to have this reminder of her.
In that context, it's funny that this is a song about prayer, I guess.

Lyrics
So if I'm gonna paint a scene lets paint it dark
now and then a cool breeze
quiet evening and a clears sky up above
drifting in thought of what might be
hoping for a break in my fortune
turning around in front of me

So I'm walking here with Gray in this dark
a spark streaks across the sky
maybe like the future is a measure
of dreams burning away away barely bright
or maybe like the matter of dreams
coming into sight

if there's a prayer in this world there's a glimmer of this night
I'm going to tie my hopes
to that shooting star
I'm gonna let 'em fly

So much rain so much darkness to out days
I want to make my little corner bright
passing a brother on the street face turned in fear
with a hard look in his eye
but I know there's a speck of hope
buried deep inside

if there's a prayer in this world there's a glimmer of this night
I'm going to tie my hopes
to that shooting star
I'm gonna let 'em fly

we could be trapped behind this mask of bitterness that covers this world
blows up out of this bitter black wind
causes us to loosen our grip on that which we need to begin
to love

so I'm painting this scene in the dark
and this spark streaks across the sky
maybe it's just a rocket reaching obsolescence
burning away barely bright
or under this dome of dark another connection
mythic and mystical for me to hold tight.

if there's a prayer in this world there's a glimmer of this night
I'm going tie my hopes
to that shooting star
I'm gonna let 'em fly

uh, I don't know the rest. A 2" tape machine or something was involved. I wasn't in charge of that stuff.
Software:
Peak and Sound Soap to clean up the tape.

Great sound, Jim...
...and a catchy tune. I really like the variations within the time signatures.

so sweet
another track that showcases all your considerable talent to great effect.
The guitar is truly embedded in the mix in a wonderfully warm way. Got a sweet easy vibe all the way thru. Master MIX. You always get that up front sound.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of Alexis. I did not know her, but reading what was available on the net, made me feel the world is a little less whole in her absence. She was obviously very gifted.

Man ... it sounds like it was all flowing outta ya when you put this together. It is seemless and follows such as soulful groove
So, how do you get good with mics eh?? I have garageband, G4 powerbook, presonic 24bit firewire interface, 2 behringer condenser mics for the guitar and a Nady uni-directional condenser mic for vocals.... id be sure grateful for your advice as your recording are so well put together!

Thank you too for taking to comment on my tune, i really do appreciate it!

Thanks man, keep up the talent!!

Wonderful
Sounds like a super-contemporary alt-country classic.

Agree about the harmony vocals - they are simply beautiful, and the guitar(s) is/are sharp and clean.

Really enjoyed this.

Phil

p.s I echo Andy's comments about mics/mic placement - any advice?
