Description

A 'prototype' of a song i wrote today. Not to sound tooooo cliche (and depressing), but it's about losing someone close to you. Again, i realise this isn't pitch perfect, and i recorded it without a click so my singing goes out of time frequently. But i put it up anyway as another 'demo version'

	wow I can't really imagine changing anything about this. I think the production and lack of a click track add to the overall emotion of the piece. Beautiful, sad, heartbreaking. pleased you liked the lyrics, i find i'm getting stroger (song-writing wise) with each post i upload. I have ONLY Macjams and the people here to thank for that, otherwise i'd be doing nothing but watching tv and reciting Chopin Nocturnes lol

Good Shtuff
I don't think anything needs changed and at all. I think the Vocal was great and so was the Piano piece. I really admired the piano piece actually. It sounds just as good as any pop pianist group out there (aka Ben Folds, The Fray, Coldplay, etc.). As for Click Tracks I'm not fan. I like it to be as natural as possible. I understand some people need that timing but this was great.

I agree with Len, one of the things that's so amazing about you is that you don't seem to realize how gifted you are. I will truly be shocked if you don't end up very famous and critically respected very soon. I get so excited when I see you've posted a new track.

This is a lovely recording of a beautiful, beautiful song. I have found listening to your demos in the past that they're so good I usually don't think they need to be touched and that's the case here, but I alway enjoy the later versions so much and realize that your vision for the song is bigger than the demo.

I love the lyrics on this song, in particular.

ahem..
not quite sure how to reply to such a wonderful comment. Like i said to Len, i have ONLY this place and the people here to thank for this. Ever since i started singing all those years ago (around 10), i have NEVER i repeat NEVER sung in front of ANYONE. Not my parents, not my friends, no-one. This was mainly due to some dreadful singing experiences as a child, which completely destroyed any confidence i had. SO, i decided i'd join a website with some complete strangers whom i'll probably never meet and see what they think. And so, alas, here i am. I would have never though i could have learnt so much, actually make friends with people i've never met before, and write and record so much music all because of one site! No other site does that!
I'm glad you liked those lyrics, not sure it applies with everyone else, but when i was very young, my parents told me that my grandad and grandma have turned into stars, and i really liked that idea, so i used. (Sorry if i've just ruined any other interpretation you might have had!)
Also, you're right, i do usually have a much larger vision for many of my songs (eventually), but for this one i'd probably keep it the same, but re-record it somewhere good on a real piano and much more polished. I guess i kind of like the piano/voice thing.

Ahead of your time, maybe... I totally loved this tune. I was almost discouraged when I read your Warning Label, but man, are you wrong.

I hear an amazing song in my headphones.

Somewhere between Coldplay and Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright.... I'd probably pay $50 to see you in concert as long as you let me and my wife come hang out backstage. They still have plenty of food and drinks back stage, right?

i have a job thats i can live off whilst giving me enough time to do my music i will be happy! BUT you're more than welcome to be my agent! I'm glad you enjoy my music, i feel like i get a little better with each post, a bit like a piano exam, Macjams gives me something to work and focus on. I LOVE it!

wow.
wow again dood. is this your upright? if is a virtual piano - let me know immediately... i must buy it. if not, fantastic job micing it - and compressing it. sounds very natural.

i like the free time... this one wouldn't work nearly as well with a click, imo. and with how full that piano sounds, don't add any other instruments. it's great as-is. one of those solo'ish tracks on an album. very cool.

only thing i might say, production wise, is maybe back some of the high end off the vocal, and a little less reverb on the voice during the 'verses'. (but just this more 'exposed' tune... the eq you have on the vocal works really well with your other tunes.)

you don't know how pleased it makes me that you picked up on the piano sound. It's actually not the Kirkman, but my Roland RD700SX' own superior grand sound. All i did to it (as you noticed) is add a slight compressor on it so it sounded more like a live recording from a real piano. I've been really exploring the sounds on the piano and have found them to be much higher quality than the garageband presets. Anywho, i will take heed of your suggestion with the eq'ing, like i said before, i'm still learning about the whole production side of things, and so need musicians like yourself to help me out. Glad you enjoyed it!

spot on...
what a pretty tune...hard to believe you didn't record the vocals as you played, because the phrasing seems spot on to me. You have a great voice - you sound familiar and 'now' but not derivitive of any one singer. I agree with those who commented that they can imagine you belting this out in an arena - me too.

The feel reminds me very much of a version of Peter Gabriel's 'Here Comes The Flood' that he sang on Robert Fripp's album 'Exposure', a stripped version that I really love.

Seriously, this is the good stuff, and I would buy it. It doesn't even feel particularly loose. It feels right and natural.

Seems I've been missing something... THAT won't happen again...

This is a powerful song with a slow build. At first, it took a little for me to get into the mood of the piece, partly because it is a slow pace (which is the right speed, BTW) and partly because the placement of lyrics on the melody lines were unusual in places. However, bot of these things actually turned to your favor and made this song stand out as gripping and powerful by the second stanza after the chorus. The chorus is great, and the last version of it, moving your voice up a notch, really worked. Awesome passionate singing. Loved the little dissonant chords sprinkled in. Nice metaphorical lyrics. I could see this played as an elegy. I need to keep strolling through your other pieces too, very nice work!

If this is what came about when you just decided to try something out, you can color me impressed. I especially like the little twist you give to the chords at 1:50 and 4 minutes. I agree with the general feeling that this doesn't need a click track. Your voice is consistently strong throughout the whole range you're using, which is pretty wide.

You will indeed become something special in your future. This is absolutely amazing Did the inspiration for the lyrics come from something specifically? Great Lyrics.

But on to some little constructive criticism. You could try to incorporate some strings into this at some point. That might add some edge to it. You could also record your voice again over the original track in harmony. That would be killerific!

Anyway, beautiful song. Off to check out your other songs!
