Description
This is a somewhat darker reinterpretation of an earlier song which more or less dropped dead here on MJs (undeservedly, of course). I added a new vocal, drum kit, and guitar parts to improve on the previous version. Etienne Verheem makes an appearance on harmonica and Erwin Steenbergen takes care of electric piano and Hammond organ. I consider this to be progressive blues, but that appears to be a currently nonexisting category...

Lyrics
Everybody knows that Memphis
holds the greatest memories
but you’ve got to admit that Memphis now
is not a place you want to be
America’s tortured image
stares you in the face:
poverty, distributed by race
Lord, save this city - save this city from its doom
‘cause it’s the least that you can do
I went out of downtown Memphis
because I couldn’t stand the smell
to watch the people cry
for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll
I passed 47 churches - more than any Lord could need -
and Taco Bells as far as the eye could see
Lord, save this city
where people still believe in you
‘cause it’s the least that you can do
holds the greatest memories
but you’ve got to admit that Memphis now
is not a place you want to be
America’s tortured image
stares you in the face:
poverty, distributed by race
Lord, save this city - save this city from its doom
‘cause it’s the least that you can do
I went out of downtown Memphis
because I couldn’t stand the smell
to watch the people cry
for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll
I passed 47 churches - more than any Lord could need -
and Taco Bells as far as the eye could see
Lord, save this city
where people still believe in you
‘cause it’s the least that you can do
