Description
I'm not totally sure what this is about - I suspect it will fit a lot of different circumstances though. Maybe it was a movie I watched or a book I read that sparked it??

The chords and lyrics came to me very quickly on this one, and it was recorded within 10 hours of being written - although I've done some polishing on the original recording since. Long term listeners to my music will note that I have used "normal" chords for a change - its a band thing :)

As for genre - the one that would probably fit best might be "country rock", but as that's not available, I chose "Folk-rock". "Acoustic rock" would have been inaccurate as there are no acoustics to be heard.

I hope this one goes down OK - I've grown to like it a lot. Discerning listeners will hear the influence of rtcooper in this one (although he doesn't play on it).

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

So Long To Goodbye
© 2008 Neil Porter

Well I should have seen this one coming
Just looked it straight in the eye
You were you, I was me
It just doesn’t pay when you lie

You’ve been crawling
On your knees
Can’t see the wood
For all those trees
You’ve been living all alone
Find somebody, take them home

You can’t always do what you want to
You won’t always get what you need
You can work til you’re dead – it’ll do in
your head
Just look after the times in between

You’ve been crawling
On your knees
Can’t see the wood
For all those trees
You’ve been living all alone
Find somebody, take them home

Small minds, big plans
Don’t need to hear them again
If I stay, you stay, won’t work that way
Its just so long to goodbye

influences
Hi Neil, it's a very cool country-rock you've made here. Guess there are many influences cooking here, but the clearest resemblance I can think of would be Keith Richards from the rolling stones. You even sound like him singing:)

I dig the way you have mixed the drums in here. The reverb has a very near/small room feeling. A cool rehearsal room sound.

A very pleasant and tasty produced and performed little song.

Thanks Thor
Bits of it reminded me of Keef - main difference is that I don't look as pickled as he does :)

I had a great time on this one - I'm spending a lot of time practising on the Tele these days, and am happy to say that I got through the guitar tracks in a single pass. Being able to do more lead work is really stimulating, although the fingers are not that fast.

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment - I appreciate it.

I'm not sure what it's about either, but I like it! The practicing you've been doing on guitar sure seems to be paying off, because the guitars all sound great. Thoddi's comment about there being a Keith Richards feel is interesting; I probably wouldn't have thought of that if he hadn't mentioned it, but, now that he has, I hear it too.

Very nice work here.

Clark
Thanks for the listen and comment Clark - always appreciated. I was never a huge fan of Keef until I bought my Telecaster, at which point I kind of understood a few things about how he plays. HAve you seen his fingers lately though - its a wonder he can play at all with his major arthritis problems.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Enjoying the summer? Because this song reminds me of the beach. I LOVE the guitar work. Reminds me of the Byrds or Buffalo Springfield. Funky and quirky.

Do me a favor and ask Lisa to sing this. I love your voice, but I think you'd have magic with Lisa on this.

Great tune.

Cheers Dave - I've just been in touch with Lisa who sounds keen. We'll see what happens - good call!

Byrds/Buffalo Springfield are not comparisons I'd have made, but 2 of my fav bands, so quite chuffed!

Thanks for the kind words Karen - I've been practising on the guitar a bit, and playing with people has helped improve my confidence a lot. I'm certainly happier with my guitar work now than I've ever been.

I am a real sucker for
the island feel. I think it is one the great qualities of the electric guitar. Kinda Margaritaville etc. It starts out with similar feel (but of course your own), which is a great opening. One that that I really noticed is that I loved how you worked the lyrics to rhyme which to me for a song like this is stellar, a good entertainment value. You maintain that terrific Jig style with the maintenance of your easy to listen to vocal! Cool guitar lead at the end, blends indeed very well with the beats.

Way To Go ! Entertaining!

Thanks a lot for having a listen and comment. Its a big learning curve for me on electric guitar, but I'm certainly having a good time trying out new stuff.

As solid as ever
Your songs are all perfect. This reminds me of a character I just saw in a movie- he was alone, planning this big venture- for 12 years or so, and had to be shaken up to the point of nearly losing his to get a move on. Gterat song!

Mix
is spot on. The guitars sound great. Everything sounds great. The alternating pan of the rhythm guitars got to me a little, maybe would be nice if most of the instruments back off for a section, loved this tune though. Downloaded, thanks!

I think
we agree on the idea of a section where the instruments back off. Maybe after the second solo. The panning was intentional - a kind of Keef vs Ron thing I guess. Thanks for listening and leaving a note.

Another Gem
Well Neil, this is a mixture of 60`s and 70`s music, assisted by a melody coming from the 80`s, in my opinion.
Wow, it`s lots of reverb on the guitar, gives it a strange but funny feeling.
I like the first part of the verse, because of its dark timbre, musically speaking.
Gets my vote! :o)

HI Ingo
I love a lot of reverb (and there's a fair amount of delay here also) on guitar for this sort of thing. I'm in my "country rock" phase I think :) I'm being encouraged to enter a "blues" phase by the guys I play with, so hopefully that will work out. I do feel comfortable in this mode though.

You're not short for level, Neil...
Had to lunge for the monitor gain as this one started... Less obviously squashed, though...Very natural sound... Did I mention loud?

Sounds like you're enjoying stretching your Telecaster chops, too...Some of it reminds me of Neil Young's guitar on 'Motorcycle Mama', long ago... There's even the merest touch of early George Harrison in the break...

This could be an anthem for people leaving MacJams...Prob'ly not what you intended, but still...

Your stuff is getting more and more polished and professional, and I'm respectfully envious...

Ed

Sounds like.....
a tune for someone who is not growing with you. I love the music; really great groove that put your vocal in the rockin' chair. That Tele sounds great. I like the placement of the instruments on the headphones; very pleasing to the ear. Did I say that Tele sounds great? Great sound.

Very cool
I have to say the thing that really stands out for me on this one is the guitar. You really have some melodic parts in here. Bass sounds good as always - minimal and effective, and nicely placed in the mix. I like the lyrics, and whatever it's about, it sounds intriguing! Lovely vocal, and really nice sound overall. Impressive to get this from your head to recording in such a short space of time! Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Hi Dave
Appreciate you dropping by, and glad you enjoyed it. Its always a little unnerving when lyrics pop up like this - I know they must be connected to something, but can't quite pinpoint a specific situation - maybe its some sort of amalgum. Oh well!

the riffs
Neil,
first off. this song has probably your best electric guitar riffs ever! Loved 'em.
Yeah, I can hear the RT & Keef & Ron Wood (yes he did a few solo albums) style here. all good by me.
Great dynamics and punch. excellent tune!

The Band
were indeed one of my all-time fav bands (which is probably how rtcooper and I ended up recording together). Would love to play like Robbie Robertson, but my all time fav guitarist is probably Richard Thompson - gets 11 out of 10 for originality alone in my book, and the way he slips and slides everything is amazing to watch.
I really appreciate such kind words from you Mark.

INCREDIBLE tone and great playing. Vocals are great, great overall production and performance. If I were to nit, I might suggest something to break it up a bit more, more dynamics or something else to change it up here and there. You're far beyond my capabilities, so I mean that from a listeners perspective! :-)

I don't know about being beyond your capabilities Willy - I just listened to your latest and it was terrific. Breaking it up is a good call - a verse with lower guitar involvement would have worked well after one of the "solos" perhaps. I'll rejig it if it gets to the CD.
Thanks for the listen and comment.

Great groove

.. guitar playing is very slick and soothing in it's familiarity. Enjoyed this
very much, especially the lyrics: although "can't see the wood for the trees" is perhaps a little over-used cliché. Improvement suggestion: well since everything else is so good, the regimented nature of the machine drums kinda sticks out .. and a live drummer would really help that backwater roadhouse sound imo. Nice touch with the chords: play-along with jiggy Neil .. I might
just have to do that from time to time too now .. or add them to the .mp3 as a little extra incentive to download :o)

Chords
Alan,
The chords were to show off that I can write a song where the chords had recognisable name (or any names at all for that matter) rather than my normal free-form "make up a new chord on the fly" technique. Its cool to think that someone might be playing along on the other side of the world.

You are of course correct about a live drummer - in almost every situation, a good live drummer will always beat a machine. Might see what Mike Watkins is up to these days :)

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment - much appreciated.

Hey Neil - this is great man. Though you do have more of a Keith Richards sound on this one, the songwriting reminds me of late 70's era George Harrison, especially the album "Gone Troppo." What i like about you
several things actually... but a constant impression I have after keeping up for a few years with your catalouge... both of us dabble here and there at other sites... and sometimes I get the impression that folk are rushing to get their next post up just to keep the light shining on them... but every time you post a song... you bring integrity and craft/artistry... always noteworthy and intersting... I think this shows great respect for your listener... it keeps me coming back...

and here again you pay attention subtle elements in the mix.... placement EQ distance.... If I ever put out a honest project, you'd be my producer/mixer of choice

you will sell no wine before it's time!

always good work Neil
