The Wonder Twins call it quits

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I wrote this tune a while back but could never get it right, probably because I think that lyrically it's the most real song I've written. You have to know something about the comic book Wonder Twins to get all the lyrics, especially the last verse, but I think that anybody who ever thought they had something perfect and then woke up and suddenly it was all NOT perfect can relate. Musically, I don't know, it's super hero funk or something. Jens Lekman gone wrong.

Lyrics
I used to think that we were kinda like the wonder twins
each born with the form of the other within
apart we were nothing, but together we'd win

I used to think that we were orphans left on rural routes
raised by a kind and childless couple in a midwest town
and the league of justice know just where to find us somehow

but I don't think that we're gonna win this time
the bad guys are just too smart and strong
they got that giant rocket they've been working on
and I guess we were just fooling ourselves
yeah I guess we were just fooling ourselves

I used to think that we were born to love and happiness
we'd just shift our shapes and clean up any kind of mess
but i've gone down the drain now that you've left the nest

What a lyric and what a sad song. If you didn't put the horns in there at the end, I might've sulked for the rest of the day, but they are just cheerful enough to allow me to get through this.

Hey Tempie, I only remember the Wonder Twins animated cartoon with the Super Friends - Can I assume the comic book was the same? I sometimes call my two the Wonder Twins as they wreak havok on my house - Wonder Twin powers - ACTIVATE! Form of a Hurricane - Shape of an Ice Bulldozer!! Didn't they have a monkey or something?

This has such a subtle and relaxed introspective feel to it. Very different, but very enjoyable. Your soft vocals are strong and well sung.

I've downloaded this just in case things start looking too great and I take my life for granted.

the horns save it
yeah it's my "sad" song...I don't know what it says about me that the only way I can talk about anything serious is by way of a hanna barbera cartoon.

zan was always water, and jayna was a bird alot of the time, hence the last verse. They didn't have their own comic - they were in the Super Friends comic but as a kid I mostly watched them on tv.

took a while to get the music right but I think it works. glad you liked it dude, I was channeling jens leckman for the vocals.

smart & strong
thats kinda what I expect in a Tempie tune. Here's its the dissonant guitars seamlessly meshing with your understated vocals that pulls me in. That solo was a study in the "notes" played as opposed to how many you ripped off. Cool track.

solo
thanks man, glad you liked the solo - i was really happy with that. plus, it's easy to remember :) Glad you liked the vocals too - they were kind of a stretch for me - i have a lot of confidence when I wail but not so much for the intimate sound.

Way, way cool
This sounds like me if I would lighten up a bit. I really, really dig this. mellow to the max. Beck-ish, in some ways.

Horns were used well.

sounds like lavalamp...
hey dude that's a real compliment thanks. as for the horns I thought they provided a nice break between mopey indie folk verses - that's probably what makes it sound a little beck-ish - his stuff over the past five years or so is kind of a folk/motown hybrid.

what a track. slow, moody, sad, by turns funky. great song man. love your guitar sound and the effects that you put on the verse vocals.

sad, by turns funky
i was thinking of your work when i did the vocal effects, trying for something intimate but at the same time cold, you know the way a person remembers something like this. i really like your description of "sad, by turns funky". That would make a great song title...

Very intelligent, sadly brilliant. Like others, I think the horns are a nice touch. These are great lyrics - nicely delivered - sigh.....

you captured our collective SIGH with your understated vocal delivery
of depressingly good lyrics about our idiotic world.
music complimented the vocal nicely..

guitar
thanks Feter. glad you liked the guitars (secret - one of the distorted rhythm guitars is a mic'd acoustic that I later applied the distortion affect to because I didn't like the acoustic sound and didn't want to have to record it again and lol it sounded great - serendipity!

I love how you put a lot of interesting bits here and there so seemlessly. It's not too much, but just enough to make each listen new and more interesting.

bits
how'd you like my stevie wonder clav work lol. i was worried the song was going to become too emo so I added some funk here and there to brighten it up. a kind of sad but not despondent vibe.

Great
Love the lyrics on this (I'm a sucker for a melancholy song!) and especially like the delivery of the lyrics. Great arrangement and mix, too. The guitar sounds nice and clear - not too muddy or dark, and those horns add a nice (rather unexpected the first time they come in) instrumental color. Very cool track. Nicely done. Peace.

melancholy
melancholy songs always make me think of the Beach Boys tune "in my room" the daddy of all mopey bedroom tunes. really glad you liked it dude, as I said before i'm shocked by how many people liked this sad tune...

this is so righteous. I love this song. that chorus is killer and I love the effect you have on your verse vocals. not to mention the awesome fuzzy soloing. the horns were an unexpected but very welcome surprise. and those lyrics! great job. Your best post to date in my mind. thanks

Cool Concept
for a tune. Your stuff seems to be hallmarked by clever lyrics and a cool vocal treatment and this fits that bill. Good and interesting stuff. ever hear "poor edward" by tom waits? Enjoyed this.

poor edward
man I had not heard that Tom Waits tune for a few years and listening to it just brought back the way that when you are young the drama of every experience is so magnified by your expectations...it's a sadder song than this one but def. in the same vein. said it before and i'll type it again, MJ is very cool for this stuff like this. thanks for sending me back to that tune!

that's the truth about sad songs ... don't know how it works but it does. my daughter went through a phase where she pretended to cry all the time - it reminded me of emo...

wonder twins
I like how this tune has no instrumental intro--I don't know why I feel compelled to have 8 bars of obviousness before the song starts. Saddest superhero funk I ever heard, for sure. Great song.
