Description
right, where to start? ... well, firstly, i'd like to apologize to everyone for my lack of participation recently, i guess i've had a crappy couple of months and just haven't been thinking straight. I've also had a nasty case of writers block of late (which explains the lack of submissions) along with a lovely bout of Impetigo, and partial blindness in my right eye...greeeat..

Anywho, i sat down today with the intention of actually completing one of my 'new songs' i've been struggling to finish, and once again (as usual) i ended up scrapping that idea and just writing a whole new one altogether (and, as usual, it's a miserable song!!! haha - sorry folks!)
So as some of you know already, i got a brand spanking new SE Electronics 2200a condenser microphone for xmas & b-day (19 two days ago - arghh!!!!) and this is my first real sesh on it. I LOVE IT. The signal-to- noise ratio is freakin amazing, (unlike my M-Audio Luna - which is a great mic, but picked up too much 'room' when i tried to pump it for those 'in-your-face vocals) so you'll have to forgive me if the vocals are a little hot in the mix (they sound alright to me, but i'm mixing on a cruddy hi-fi)
I also took the opportunity to actually make an effort with the production of this one. I even draped some blankets behind the mic to minimize reflections, and took some time with the levels. The only problem i have with this mic (and not a bad thing) is that it is SO sensitive, and clips easily when singing loudly (and i'm using allll the mic techniques i know of) but this isn't a big deal, as i'll be looking to get an ART PRO VLA2 tube compresser for this bad-boy as soon as i get a little extra money (or any money at all for that matter)

The 'harmony' bits at the beginning were really just an experiment (something i've really never explored), but i quite liked them, so i decided to leave them in there, even though they're a bit random! This song is not finished - what a surprise - and i intend to add stuff to it later on (including a re-arrangement, epic string section and something at the end) so it's still in it's early stages. However, as with most of my stuff, it's just been so long since i've posted anything, i thought i'd put it up anyway!

A belated Happy New Year to you all, i hope '09 brings good things to all you amazing people here at Macjams!!!!

Hope you like,

Mckenzie

Lyrics
I'd tell you everyday,
the words i wanna say,
but all you ever do is spit them out,

you do it everytime,
it seems you wanna fight
a war with everything you've ever loved

Even though, you're not that unaware,
you carry on, it feels like you don't care,
"It's all my fault" well this weight is too much to bare,
in my own love at war

A jukebox symphony,
i dedicate to me,
and all us long-lost lovers drink to that,

cos you've chipped away my soul,
and left an empty hole,
now all my lips touch with is alcohol,

etc

i always try to enjoy the performance (even if it is rather sombre and darn right depressing!) when i'm recording so i can make it as 'real' as possible, so i'm glad you thought i did...still a long way to go yet though!

this is so beautiful. Your vocal is lush and filled with passion. That new mic rocks. Your piano playing superbly paces the track. Sorry to hear of your eye troubles.

I'm glad you liked it (especially glad you gave the mic honorable mention!) I'm also pleased you liked the piano track - i wanted something simple but rythmic to keep the flow going and i hope thats the feeling i conveyed! I hope my eye gets better soon, i'm off to see an eye doctor later, but thanks for your condolences!

thanks again for the comment :)

O my goodness!
Swept me away! absolutely beautiful! Great job man! It hits me deep. Thank you so much for that experience.

The piano's simplicity but continual arpeggios made such a powerful backdrop for your message & beautiful vocal lines.

I absolutely love that the second line of the verse goes up instead of repeats the first line. That's one of the most beautiful traits of this song.

Thank you again for sharing!

how nice to hear something new from you! Your voice is amazing - you can hit those high notes with such confidence. I don't know crap about mics, but you certainly sound excellent. The piano accompaniment in here is rich, deep and (as a pianist I can say...) adds a gorgeous depth to this beautiful song. Thanks!

Ouch!
Man...your vocal is amazing.

The pain expressed here in this manner, shows a maturity of existence on this planet, to the point that one can only conclude, that pain and sadness were often friends of yours.

This is the type of tune, that would strike a chord in many, coming out of similar painted scenario. The type of tune on a jukebox, that one would deposit many quarters for, over and over, until the pain was gone.

Nice job with this tune a commiseration for camrades with painful hearts.

Your voice
is just gorgeous. I just sat transfixed. The mic is great, and the production is wonderful. The lush piano is back just far enough that it melts into the background until the fills, and then becomes a highlight of the moment. You have a real grasp of the ache and sadness of the 'falling out of love' song. This is amazing!

Again, Great stuff
Like everyone else, I have been waiting for a new release. I was very excited to see a new post from you. Your vocals on this one is one of your strongest yet. I wouldn't give too much credit to the mic, it's the singer that makes the real difference. Your feeling on this is wonderful from vocals to piano. Like I have mentioned in the past, it would be great to hear a band behind you so your tunes can really build and support that warm yet strong voice of yours. Thanks again for the post and sincerly can't wait to hear more.

thank you
haha, I couldn't help it, i was just so happy with the mic, but i did make a big effort on the vocal performance with this one (practiced a little, warmed up properly etc) so i'm pleased you thought it worked. Regarding the band, i couldn't agree more. You always seem to have the same vision as me regarding my songs, and this is no exception. The only problem is that i don't have a band. I wrote a big ending for this one (as i have with alot of the others lol) and might ending up posting it up here. Most of these uploads are acoustic/piano based versions of what i see as being 'bigger' in future versions, when maybe i do have a band to work with. Thank you so much for your continued support and advice, it's really appreciated.
Thank you again

I couldn't agree more, we also found a pair of Akai SW-155 1970 speaker cabinets in our attic that just look freakin' amazing so i was all excited about those too. Recently i've just become a complete gear slut, it's really bad! By the way, that new tune of yours is actually my favorite yet. I'm honestly not just saying this to sound 'nice', but on two occasions now, i've been walking home from the train station (about 40min walk) and i've just had 'i need my %20' on repeat both times. Nifty
Your vocals sound great. I'm sure the microphone helps, but you have a great voice to begin with. Very nice piano playing too.

Hm. A bit less reverb? Call it a matter of taste. It sounds a bit metallic to me. Is there a noise gate cutting off the tail?

Thank you very much Vic!
Listening back, there have been a few things that i want to change with this, reverb being the first one i picked up on. I agree, i just used the garageband AU reverb plugin and got a bit carried away methinks. There isn't an actual gate on there, but i did edit the reverb time to quite short, so thats probably why it cuts off the tail! Something i will definately be looking to rectify (i'm still learning about the eq'ing, processing and all that jazz, so your constructive input is welcomed with open arms!! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

hmm not sure how I missed this one. Thought you were on my email notification list. No matter, I'm here now and this is crazy outstanding. Love the piano in this and I'm hearing some Chris Martin in the way you delivered your vocals, though this is a lot more emotional than his usual fare. Really great lyrics too. Thanks Ridd
I always look forward to your input, and am so happy you made it over to take a listen. I really put a lot into this one, and had great fun too. I set up a 'reflection screen' (two mic stands and a large blanket lol) to dampen my ridiculously old and loud G4, I then took extra time with levels etc, and even did 2 takes and tried my hand at a little 'comping' hehe (GET ME using all this 'tech' terms) so i'm so pleased you appreciate that. I couldn't agree more with the outro bit, i've been busy writing stuff for that bit over the last few days and i know exactly what your getting at! Otherwise the piano outro bit goes on for a little too long with nothing really happening. Thanks again so much for your continuous support and expertise advice - it's much needed and happily received!

By the way, really love your stuff at the moment, especially your new one 'sincerely molly', what an inspiring song man, i'll be over soon to comment properly soon.

Cheers mate!

Love the Bad Boy
There's something so inspirational about a new mic and, as usual, you put it to maximum good use. You have such an unusual world-weariness in your performances and lyrics for someone so young, but it's part of what is so appealing about your songs. I especially love the thought of a jukebox symphony. You continue to amaze and inspire me.
