Description
More musings from the attic on man and his condition. I found these lyrics I had written some time in the last year. Put them to some simple chords. I'm not sure what thoughts I was having at the time that led to these words but... listening could cause depression... ;-)

Lyrics
And when the rains came falling down
it was too late for me.
Ten thousand shadows on a wall
but I could not see.
Heeding not the voices
I would not hear.
Lost in my illusion
of pleasure and fear.
And when the rains came down
it was too late for me.
And when the rains came falling down
it was too late for me.

Building an edifice
to last for all time.
All the while, in changing sands,
etching mortal lines.
And the stabs of my conscience,
the white noise of my mind,
Stir only the shallows
of my distracted insides.
And when the rains came down
it was too late for me.
And when the rains came falling down
it was too late for me.

band idea....
I like your idea of a band playing in this song. Some drums, bass, and and electric guitar (with some nice licks here and there). Hmmm.
As always I appreciate your comments Mr. McBlues. Grab your strat and add something... who knows maybe Neil would add some bass and midi drums... oooo, an B3 would be nice. You got me thinking. Thanks.

It's nice
to visit these deeper thoughts once in a while to see how far we've come, so I don't find it depressing at all. I like the comfortable sounds of your voice and the guitar, with the Harmonica for that cosy feel on a really nice song with lyrics that paint pictures, Cheers M

depressing or not?
Good to know this doesn't depress but brings on some deeper thoughts. I guess that is what I hope for in songs like this. And your comments about the song painting a picture... I like that. Thanks much.

Thoughtful lyrics
"And the stabs of my conscience, the white noise of my mind, stir only the shallows of my distracted insides" describes perfectly the clutter of the world's influences and the lack of peace one has when there is no definition of right and wrong left. Great writing, as I love the harp!

right and wrong....

Therein lies the conflict... inwardly we all contrive to blur right and wrong (even our own professed standards) to suit our own perceived "good and gain." Yet it is such second nature (actually first nature) that we don't even attend to the moral drift. That is man's condition. And he is helpless to overcome it. Yet, as you know, there is Hope for those that see the dilemma.

Thanks for stopping in Roxylee.

I was immediately attracted
to your chat post "depressing folk..." - I might as well have a reason to feel the way I do. A bit under the weather - and adrift - or - as I once read on a panhandler's sign "It's the uncertainty". Well written tune - and I like performed straight up or "neat" as they say at the bar. Thanks for the consolation - isolation is not good for the soul.

isolation is not good for the soul...
Everyone can relate, I think... if they they're paying attention... not to my song, but to life. Garden variety depression is a reasonable place to often be. I find myself there frequently. The question I ask is "why?" Is there something missing?... something more? For myself, the answer is yes there is. I'll be posting the first song I uploaded back in 2004 for the upcoming MJ Festival. It came out of a very depressing time and hits on this same theme. Enough of my ramblings.

I don't seem to have the time and energy to record very many full-on production songs any more. Not that I did that many before. Seems like my guitar, harp, and voice often get to the heart of it. So thanks for your comment on the straight up performance.

depressingly,
Jack

Good question.
Probably, I was witnessing (once again) my own struggles with myself. Kind of like being a spectator to one's self during one's own hypocrisy. To me it is a fact of life... a weight to bear, but not to despair. Boy am I getting wordy in these last couple posts.

Really, thanks for stopping in. "Nicely done" does it for me.

Lift it
the stabs of my conscience,
the white noise of my mind

You tell it like it is, my friend. Don't apologize for the wind and water which wash away sand castles.
Dadai.2 said 3098 days ago (January 28th, 2009)
I kinda...
liked that turn of phrase, myself. "the stabs of my conscience, the white noise of my mind"... too often my experience. Who will save me from this state? Yes, sand castles don't last, yet we hope for something permanent and real. Good thoughts my friend. Thanks.

It's a nicely balanced recording, Jack,
...of a nicely balanced tune...

I particularly like the loose quality of your voice here, loose in a good way...I don't hear strain, and I seem to hear you relaxing into the tune really nicely...

Has some of that quality of that guy, you know, whatisname, the songwriter dude...

(You know, I have a song that I haven't posted here called, 'When The Rain Comes Down'.... )

Re: your song...
"When The Rain Comes Down"... post it.

Ed, I can't shake whathisname when I do this kind of song. I have always loved his oddly unusual, very appealing style of singing. I don't think about it... just it one of those things. I only wish I could sound more nasal like him... heheh. This key and melody were very comfortable for me. I did feel more vocal control than usual.

Do whatever you need to... then post it.
Thanks,
Jack

well it's pretty much a page out of anyone's life at some point.

the man in the attic sure has been sounding laid back and relaxed. I f I don't pay to close attention to the lyrics itself I find to tune pretty relaxing..... I also try not to read the newspaper much any more.

I should point out the mixing sounds very good as well.

Pensive is not depressing
The lyric alone is tough to take; delivered as it is, it's a meditation.
Time runs shorter for us all, and I appreciate one simple facing up to it more than I do a thousand faux "alternative rock' spasms.

Thank you.

a meditation...
yes, that is what this is, a meditation on life... and I think you put it well. There are things better faced than ignored. In facing things as they really are inside our little world there can be hope, at least honesty to a degree. Ignoring that reality or minimizing it is deadly. Boy, am I sounding a bit heavy... Thanks M of Meursault.

happy and sad
Does making a successful recording of a sad song such as this make you happy?

Sorry - I plead guilty of trying to be too clever.

Nice work here. Both the guitar and your voice have such a deepness of feeling that it totally reinforces to philosophical musings ... with the harp thrown in as a bonus. Sure, it could be redone with more instrumentation, but that might not be an improvement, just something different. It is succinct as it is.

question #1...
yes.
Actually a good question. Life, being difficult much of the time, is best acknowledged as it is... this can encourage and even lift a depressed spirit, i.e. each of us is not alone in our struggles.

Warren, your comments are always worth reading... some of the best.
Thanks.

Nice song Jack,
that Nady must be a nice mic; this is so clean and I like where this song is going. There is a strong tradition of lament in folk music, it is an art form in itself. The last two lines are a natural hook. The Martin sounds great as well as your vocal and harp. Do you use a Special 20?
Cheers,
Joe

strong tradition of lament...
in me too ;)

Joe, good to know you liked this one. The recording is cleaner than most of my past ones... I'm getting a little better on that front. The Nady is an inexpensive condenser mic (powered by its own battery). It doesn't do a bad job at all. I'm using a Hohner Blues Harp MS. Although I just went and read about the Spicial 20... I may have to get one to see how I like it.
Thanks for stopping in.

Thanks smokey...

for stopping in a sampling the song. I appreciate the generous comments. The "white noise of my mind" line was one I did think worked well, nice to know you caught it.

I used the H2 condenser and Nady condenser. Both have great recording qualities... but I think the "lower" noise ratio is due in part to Audacity's noise removal tool that I used. A minor tweak that I have to remember to use again.

cheers,
Jack

I'm glad you posted the video of this one in the thread. I love this kind of folk music. The lyrics have great depth but are abstract enough for different listeners to relate to them in very personal ways. Very nice sounding recording. The guitars are rich. Nice harp playing as well.
