Mary Jane (MJRF)

Description
I wrote these lyrics in '07 (first year I joined MJ) and never really did anything with them... until now. Not sure what the song means. Maybe it's about addiction. The weird sounds at the end (part of this song played backwards & effected) will lead into another song, I think. We shall see!

Lyrics
she is counting flowers
from the graveyard towers
she gets to a hundred
and starts again

he is dreaming of her
as he tosses and turns
in a single word
he speaks her name (Jane)

mary jane
runs through my viens
mary jane
inside my brain

she is spreading her seed
where the mountains recede
she is trying hard not to despair

he is following her
sun reflecting silver
light into her dark eyes
she's aware

mary jane
runs through my viens
mary jane
inside my brain

Sad Lament
Interesting and strange song, it is a sad song but very reflective. Its very nice and well composed. I like what you did at the end of the track, very trippy.

Really cool lyrics...
Love the trails on your voice. How do you do that?

Dark chords. Top-notch guitar sound.

Ridd, this is an excellent song.

the trails are just another vocal track pushed forward and effected with GB's 'Telephone Voice'. Gald you like this so much, Dave. Thanks

Trippy indeed and
very unique in sound. I love the different vocal parts that come in times. Really changes the dynamics of the sound. I too like the ending... Trippy indeed!

Does the term Acid trip come to mind
This is way out there, especially how you have the echo delay on the lead vocal in places. Nice clean recording of the vox and guitar and a good mix. Love what you did on the ending and as the others have said, very trippy.

Nice track Ridd.

acid trip
well, I've never done it but I'm watching The Beatles Anthology DVDs right now, and I've just come to the LSD experimentation phase of their career. Perhaps that influenced this? haha. Thanks for the feedback, Ed. Glad this took you on a trip

who's the new mary jane
cool and sparse. one thing i like is the descending chord progression. Like some of the songs Lennon did on the white album. the effected stuff is minimal but very effective. the reverse stuff and the end is cool

nice one
i really like the chords and melody on the verses - the way it's fragile and out in space

the backwards ending fits perfectly

thank you

Good 1
Riddick!
To me it has a strong Foo Fighters influence.I could be easily be a higlight for their "accoustic disk" from double album "In your honour" (their last good record).
Everything is crisp and clear, the production is top notch.
What audio interface do you use?
It sounds very good.

I totally hear acoustic foo in this too. In Your Honour is one of my favorites of theirs. I didn't use anything special in this one at all. just recorded the acoustic and my vocals with my snowball mic plugged right into the back of my mini, and GarageBand.

Love this!
You have a lovely voice, and summon an amazing degree of atmosphere from the acoustic strumming and simple harmonies. Great stuff.

I think this is the first thing of yours I've heard. I've been missing out.

love the
low drone that drops in around the 2:15 mark. The ending is totally bad ass, and I would love to hear one of your balls to the walls rock tracks follow it up, just to scare the weak old ladies and the week old babies.

Love the
restraint of this. The low key accompaniments work beautifully and your voice excels.

Whatever it's about
Whatever it's about it's hypnotic and intriguing. Great lyrics, with some lovely images woven through the lines. Excellent acoustic sound, too, and I'm with lavalamp on the vocal trails - very effective. Your voice sounds great on this, and the sad, dark vibe is strangely mesmerizing. Lovely stuff. How do you record your vocal? Love the sound. Excellent. Nice one. Peace.

thanks for the thorough review. For this song I just got right up on my mic (blue snowball) and pre-compressed it so I didn't get too many pops and hisses.

Syd Barrett influence...
This is who came to mind listening to your track. Nicely done R! The production touches are nice and unexpected. Like that harmony touch. DId you sing the harmonies or is that a vocal processor doing them? Just curious. I like the ending too. Great lyrics that match-up well with the music. Key tune.

thanks man. glad you like it. i did all the harmonies myself. when you say vocal processor do you mean something like the 'vocal transformer' in GB? I've used it for robot voices and stuff like that but I've never tried it for harmonies.

R...
no , what I was thinking of was one of these auto vocal harmonizers. TC Helicon is one maker. Even better though that you did the harmonies. What do you use for an interface to record into tour computer? Thanks mate.

i'm playing catchup here
you're posting so many songs lately! *jealous*

dig your low harmonies in the choruses. the monotone piano/bass in the later verses is true radness. can't wait to hear what the reverse-style ending leads into!

Sad but True.
True to the feelingyou were trying to express . It came through loud and clear. Haunting and well constructed lyrics. Nice overall sounding recording. I have a melencholy streak that I keep tucked away for just such an occasion.

Listening for more gems like this,
Dave.
