Well, this is the first song I collaborated on at MacJams, the first internet collaboration I ever did, back when I first joined MacJams back in 2204 {edit: I just realized I wrote that I joined MJ 200 years in the future...that's another reunion festival that has yet to happen...and I'm surprised no one has picked up on that!}. I posted a version of this a couple weeks ago but took it down, partially when I realized I could use this for the Reunion festival thing and partially when I realized what I'd put up wasn't the whole song as we did it back then. Iseae posted in the forum in 2004 ((this post)), looking for collaborators on this sketch of a song she had started, which consisted of the verses that you hear here. I think she put together the piano part as well. A couple people took a shot at some parts. I believe juedm did a drum track and fosod did a track of flutes, but I really took off with it and played guitars, bass, added a whole new drum part and sang, and added a bridge section to the song. I thought that worked out pretty well, but going through my emails, I found one where Iseae told me that she thought it needed a chorus, so I wrote one. We finished it up like that and she put it up on her page. She had harmonized on the chorus and her husband at the time punched in a note that I sang that was off, and it was interesting but the mix wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but still pretty good for my first internet collaboration, which would lead to many more. Eventually, I lost touch with Iseae, when as far as I can figure, she went through a lot of significant personal changes (including her marriage breaking up)and removed almost all of the songs on her page except one. I always liked this song, but the lyrics I'd written for the chorus and the bridge were sort of cloying, and I sang them in a cloying style, so I decided to re-write the lyrics and redo those parts. Of course I got carried away. I've remixed this pretty thoroughly for this version:
1. the drums are all new, replacing the juedm track and my old drum loop tracks with a new EZ Drummer part
1. the flute part that fosod is still in there, but I replaced the sound with mellotron flutes
3. my original harmonies on the verses from 2004 are still there, but I added pitch correction to give it a sightly T-Pain effect.
4. The bass part from 2004 is still there with a new Logic bass amp sound.
5. The guitar part from 2004 is pretty much untouched (it ends with ebow)
6. The vocals on the chorus and bridge are all new, with the T-Pain effect, that in part is there to give my vocal and underwater effect, because of the water references in the lyrics of the verses, partially because Iseae used some Melodyne on her vocals and I thought maybe it would go along with the sound of her vocals better.
7. Iseae's vocals are all the original ones from 2004, and the pitch correciton is as she did it with Melodyne
8. The piano part that Iseae played has been extensively edited.
9. The last chorus has been extended by 1/2.
Like I've said, MacJams was the first place I ever collaborated over the internet with other people on music, and this is probably the first song I'd ever actually written with someone else over a long lifetime of writing songs, so this was a real revelation to me. Since then I've done a lot of collaboration with people, most significantly with Kelli King as The Fritters, but also with ledebutant among others. This song started it all, and when I listen to it now, it does bring up all sorts of memories and associations. Since this Reunion thing is all about retrospection, it might be especially appropriate.

Lyrics
I can still feel you pressed against me
I close my eyes and there you stand
As if nothing ever happened
And nothing ever will
I'm lost and drowning in torrents of the past
And it's these memories
Calling to me
That remind me of all that was.
And I find myself washed away
In the eternity that is today
As this moment is a gift of grace
It's these memories that will sustain me
Sustain me...
Last night's flame still burns inside me
I feel your hands against my skin
As if you were here beside me
But that's not going to change
I'm sinking in this ocean of love that's gone and past.
And it's these memories
Calling to me
That remind me of all that was.
I close my eyes and there you stand
As if nothing ever happened
And nothing ever will
I'm lost and drowning in torrents of the past
And it's these memories
Calling to me
That remind me of all that was.
And I find myself washed away
In the eternity that is today

Sustain me...

And it's these memories
Calling to me

Oh yes, I remember Iseae! I hope she's OK, wherever she is and whatever she's doing. She certainly has a lovely voice ... especially when she's singing towards the top end of her range and gets lovely soft tones out of it.
This is really nice Jim. Your production is spectacularly good, as always.
