Description
Restless is a poem that I wrote in July of 2008. I posted it on my Yahoo Answers page. In the last week, davisamerica asked if I'd read some poetry over a soundscape he put together. I thought I screwed up, not really knowing how to place words. Today, he sent me his "tinker" as Alannah calls the artistic tweaking. You should hear a stormy night and a rather "pissed" woman having a dialogue with herself, as she roams from room to room.
davisamerica is the producer. I only wrote the thing and spoke it. Thanks, Jack!

davisamerica : " I had the most wonderful experience getting to see Char's talent during a project we were both on this summer. Over the months she has shared some of her poetry and I have always thought I would like to do the backing music to one of her works. "Restless Night" painted a great story in my head when I first heard it and Char was gracious enough to let me play along. We did some experimentation in that we wanted to create the image of moving about in an apartment, watching it rain and having this "internal" conversation. I hope the vocal effects do not offend as they are intentional. ... and I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. Thanks Char ! "

Lyrics
Restless

So here I am, again.
Sleep-walking through one more restless night.
Should I go to my bed,
Though I can't stop my nightmarish fright?
>>>
It just spills over now,
Through the agonizing, pointless days.
Do I have to allow
Life lived through a veil of choking haze?
>>>
It doesn't have to be like this.
I don't want the endless pain.
Oh, yet another day I spend,
With another sad refrain.
>>>
Oh still, I walk on shards of glass,
And I cling with claw-like hands.
I cry and cry a thousand tears.
Is there one who understands?
>>>
Is there one?
Let there be, at least, just one.
Is there one?
Is there one?

like so far
I like the direction you are going in so far - seems like there are many interpretations that can be embarked upon. Now that you have heard the music how are you thinking about intonation and all that?

I only did it once.
I think I should go for a British accent, next. :) I would have done more readings where I wasn't hesitant, because I didn't know what I was doing, but I got the impression that davisamerica liked it as it was. I was listening to his music when I spoke the poem. As for the voice, unfortunately, that's me. I am getting used to things getting done, though imperfect. Thank you, awigze.

This is creepy. The lyrics and the music. The whole thing is kind of like what happens if you a take whole box of benadryl.

If I had a smokier or throaty voice
it could be macabre. Instead, I have this "little girl" voice. You would die if you took benadryl and didn't puke it up, first. Insomnia is a real consequence of stress and frustration. I know.
The poem is about not being able to find rest. You want to hear something really creepy....?
You should hear me sing the thing. Thanks for stopping in, Rev. :)

insomnia
this is a great piece

insomnia is something i know... too well

although this also brings in elements of depression (another thing I know a little)

i was glad to hear a hint of hope in the closing lines - it rounds out the piece and makes it whole

thanks

As I've said before you have a great singing voice and an excellent speaking voice, take it from a broadcaster/actor. I like it. Davis did some wild sounds here and your voice with it at times reminds me of the poetry of Jim Morrison and the sounds of the Doors.

Woohoo, there she goes!
Good to see your song page filling up with your works! Overall, this is very nicely put together, both of you! Char, your poem is great. I would only suggest putting a little more drama into the reading, but your voice was clear and thoughtful here. Jack, your hesitant music backing seemed perfect for this, well done!

I know.
I certainly would have done more readings. I think I could do it better. But it was an honest first and only reading in an unfamiliar circumstance. Reading to music compares to singing to music. The trade off is that neat background that makes it more interesting.
Two isn't exactly filling up. Without Daniel, Mike, Jack, ic42, Ez, Moses and you..I would have nothing. Lucky, lucky me.

So sorry
So late on the comment here. I did a FAMO (the Fave and Move On) move and promised myself I'd get back for a comment and then the boss lowered the boom and made me endure a 5 and 1/2 hour document review meeting... I wanted to carve my skull out with a butter knife near the end of that!!!

Alas tomorrow will be yet another busy day but I promised myself to come listen to something posted by probably two of my favorite MacJammers! Char and Jack...

This had me on edge during the entire listen my friends and I mean that good... It keeps you there... I mean you can't turn this off. When I went to hit the browser back button I got a little warning shock to listen all the way through! (just kidding).

Excellent you too! Excellent!

This is cool. I like this kind of spoken poetry with background. You do it well. Actually, I'm thinking it sounds like so many of us, who go through the sleepless night thing, but then are back at our jobs the next day, acting professional and normal. I'm not sure that's the effect you were going for, but that's what I read into it.

In a way
I am glad you can relate, though I would never wish insomnia on anyone. I think stress puts your brain in a state of anxiety and so the rudimentary part of the brain keeps you awake. And yes, you know you are at a disadvantage but you still try to function, because you must. Exactly right, Kristyjo. It is good to know you can appreciate what davisamerica did with his music. Thank you.:)

Excellent
This is great. I think your delivery of the lines works very well with the musical background - not affected or "forced", and not twisted to achieve some effect, rather spoken, recited as it should sound, and then the music wraps itself around the words. Wonderful. The poem is really good, evocative of that dark, bewildering state of sleeplessness (or at least to me) and nicely complemented by the sonic surround. Jack, your music here is perfect. You guys are a great combo. Thanks for sharing this with us. Kudos all round. Peace.

Char
This to me is a mix of Laurie Anderson and William S. Borroughs, still its your words and your story of course. In regards to reading poetry (which I've did quite a bit when I where young), I think it has to be a caption of the moment, which in many ways still is the philosophy of my music development as well (although not 100% true, but, I like to lie). I actually liked this quite a bit, mainly because it sounds honest. I take anything honest upon anything polished any day (the liar said, he, he). It is sad, just like life is at times. To me you captured a personal moment. And you did it with passion. P.S. Also reminds me Lydia Lunch a bit.

There
sure is a need to have more understanding of what goes on in the brain when sleeping and waking up. It may be one of the most important things to learn in this life. When you don't sleep
you lose the ability to do even simple math, engage in simple eye-hand co-ordination and you hurt all over as if you have the flu. Sleep repairs and renews everything. It is necessary. But, your body can refuse to sleep, regardless of how fatigued, as long as a strong enough stressor is active, such as anxiety or fear. I always was a night person and it was too easy to stay up to continue some activity.
Do that too many times and you forget how to lie down and sleep.
Thank you for appreciating the experience mirrored in this work. :)

exhausting nights
Hope this isn't the reality for you Char... Restless nights are pretty exhausting. There's probably as many reasons as there as people experiencing it... Having peace of mind is vital I guess. Being aware and true to ourselves about who we are and what we love comes to me as a guideline for achieving this. Isn't that just one of the things to wish for... a quiet night, and a good nights sleep... Very natural to many, and we don't give it much though if we have it. But when we don't... it can ruin the day.

The music and spoken words are like meant to each other. Very well performed by both parts:)

To my ears this poem is not of saddness or torture in living but of someone who is seekin other enlightened souls but only finding the normal zombies the selfish self centered robots . Its a burden to become conscience . To see the world through compassion and not through the Haze . Cool thought provoking work char :)

This is so cool
I find it hypnotic. Both of you guys did a great job.

I hope you get some rest soon.

I eliminated a major
stressor a while back. I go to bed and most times, I sleep. I still tend to being a night person. I have to watch the "staying up all night" behavior. Davisamerica wanted to do this. It was his vision. I have tons of crappy poetry lying around. Thank you for listening and liking it. :)

Ah, yes the rain.
All Davisamerica's doing. I only read a poem. One shot while not certain how to go about it. Glad it turned out sounding all right. Thank you :)
