Walk Left/Stand Right

Description
Sometimes I take the skytrain to work and get off in a really busy underground station. One station in particular has a really loooong escalator. It must be a 10 story climb to street level. At least it feels that way... Anyway I was approaching this escalator one day and I noticed how we were all scurrying like little insects towards it as if we were having a race. When I got closer I saw a sign on it that said 'Walk Left, Stand Right'. Sure enough, everyone obeyed this sign. Stationary people stayed on the right and people in more of a rush were skipping up on the left. For some reason the whole thing struck me as funny. I mean the sign and sentiment makes total sense and everything - I just couldn't get over how we all 'obeyed' and even sometimes enforced this rule. Anyway, that's the story, and here's the song. It's partially based on that experience but I think it's subconsciously a metaphor for something else. Not sure what.

Lyrics
"Don't you look at me"
Your eyes keep telling me
I'm making it too obvious I guess

I should apologize
For staring in your eyes
It's not your fault
I tend to get obsessed

And then I see a sign
With stainless steel behind
It tells me everything we need to do

We're stacked up like maggots
Inside a dead carcass
So I will read these simple words to you

Walk left, stand right

And when we reach the top
The scurrying won't stop
and you and I will go our separate ways

When you walk out of sight
Into the city lights
I will turn around and then descend
Again

Walk left, stand right

Yeah, Ridd...
...gettin' tired of being told what to do...and how to do it...all the time...

Great combo of acoustic and electric guitar...jolting song...as it should be...

"...sign with stainless steel behind..." is perfect...

daily life
thanks a lot feter. Although I live about an hour away from it, I spend a lot of time in the city where I work. One look around and you can see a wealth of material to write about. Thanks for the feedback, brother

great tune...great concept
i feel like that all the time man. too many signs, too many rules, and too many eyes making sure your doing exactly what your "supposed" to do. great tune all the way around. has a familiarity about it, but i can't put my finger on what it reminds me of...and it didn't fully hit me til the chorus kicked in. lovin it though man, very nicely done!

yeah, that familiarity is probably Soundgarden's 'Fell on Black Days'. I just recently made that connection myself. The bassline and time sig is a little Toolish, too. Thanks for the feedback, glad you like it

Walking/Standing
You know Ridd - you're just such a songwriter! As Feter referenced, it's your ability to make an amazing song out of everyday experiences that's especially cool. Wonderful vocals, guitars - both kinds - just a great listening experience, again......thanks guy!

You So Nailed This!!
Every morning I take an escalator up from the underground metro where people actually stand right and walk left. And there is no sign telling anybody to do so either. You musical commentary on this curious human behaviour is so on point and the musical soundbed behind it all really kicks!! And I like that photo too!

You're right, she's left.
Winners walk, losers stand, and nobody as to say "excuse, me please". That's how it is. I usually stand with the losers, to have more time to see a girl go down on the opposite escalator.

I will have to add this sing in my Ipod for the subway time.

elemental
the music definitely captures that subterranean "herding" as we all funnel towards the trains or exits. Your voice sounds especially cool and plaintive on this. I myself am a stand right person. Even when I need to be running. I just can't bring myself to do it. nice one

You've become
One of my favorite artists on MJ.. I know we don't interact much... but I have to extent a deepest bow your way... there are so many nuanced touches that you put in your work that lift you way above the average or mundane... I love the meter in the lyric/melody.. the way it turns around at the end of the phrase... and ends up feeling unforced and conversational... this must be intuitive on your part... and you always take such care to set up the mood/atmosphere... it's like you use music to do set design for each little sonic play that you put on...

really brilliant stuff

stand right
I really like the feel of this one. the verse has a nice subterranean almost under water kind of feel and then the chorus breaks out like riding the stairs into the light. cool dude! and i like the "stacked up like maggots in a carcass" line. wonder if you can carry that analogy past the spatial aspect. Like are the people in the subway carrying out kind of the same function as the maggots? Cleaning away time? I don't know...but this is going on my ipod. BTW this might be what Alice in Chains would sound like if Staley hadn't died.

you need
to figure out what the hell you're writing about :). Just joking. Your last two songs have the "I don't know what this song is really all about". It's cool. Sometimes the song and the message leads more than we realize it does. Anyway...

COOL track. A very sleek sound to this one. the stutter in the verse bassline is a particular favorite. The skyway is jammed, Marty.

haha on the contrary I prefer to 'stay in the dark' about what I'm writing so it stays somewhat honest. I think if I thought about it too much it'd be uninteresting. ANyway thanks for the feedback, eric. 1.21 GIGAWATTS?!?!

It is
a great description of urban decay and everytime urban life get more organized, we get more controllable and conditioned to obey rules...
the bad thing is that urban chaos would do worse.
Anyway, great song, I was about to throw some band comparison but it´s silly and unecessary, the song is good enough on its own.

Lol
Your last couple of songs have been metaphors for something as well, also that sign is great esp since its real, its complete madness. This song is well written and composed (again), its really nice although it does sound a little like Nivana, although that does not take anything away from this track. Nice one Ridd.

glad you like this. i dont mind the nirvana comparison at all, but I gotta say i don't hear them in this. MAYBE the chorus? you're not the first to say it so it's probably just me hehe. Anyway, no matter if it sounds like them I don't mind a bit. thanks for the feedback

the bass tone
is off tha hizzle! great complimentary ac gtr parts too. i'm not usually a fan of the phaser'd distortion gtr, but it totally works here. the thirds/harmonies on the last distortion gtrs is rad - along with quiet outro. the only thing i found i was still waiting for was "thank you" in the choruses somewhere. =P

Very good construction on the Guitar and Bass parts. They compliment each other so well! The electric really sets this one off. I'm hearing early Sabbath on that part.
