Description

This piece was written around the sound of the trombone with the theme of completion in mind. As it started to form and grow it became rather grand and sweeping so I just went with it to see what would happen. As it turns out, it is a good fit to the Hero's Journey Project in the sense of the hero returning to their home after learning so much, now ready to share knowledge with his or her people.

This piece is dedicated to my wonderful Trombone pod-mates and our fearless leader Akasha from CTI as we complete the certification programme in co-active coaching. You guys are each a treasure!

It wasn't until today that I realised that there is an up and down, crashing-through-the-waves kind of phrasing to the last section that I hadn't connected with sailing - duh! At least my sub-conscious was at work linking the picture to the music. My conscious brain was looking for a hero returning home kind of photo.

Message to self... listen to the underlying intuition!

I want to see a movie
with that music in it ! Love the pic as well. The trombones really make a good sound. But also the other orchestrated sounds fit very nicely. I've said it before but I love it when a poster pics out a good image for the music and you did really good as well.

Would love to hear more music like this at MJ because I think there is nothing more uplifting than movie music. You build up of sounds about 3/4th the way through is very stirring, exciting!
The whole thing was a delight. Plus thanks for taking the time out to email me as well.

But really this instrumental was a delight to hear ! And see !

This is beautiful, majestic, and dynamic. The orchestration is beautifully realized. I love when a song is started, and then it begins to take over, almost composing itself, subtly telling you what it needs. And the result you achieved in that process is spectacular.

There is something amazing about how instrument choices (and even the notes of a melody) just happen sometimes without thought or planning. I skipped right past the oboe and went straight to the cor anglais and that was that, then paired it with the bassoon (which was consciously thought about) later in the mid-part to provide a complimentary double reeded sound.

Yes, this grew to be quite monumental
My son calls this style Epic. Certainly the dedication to my fellow coaches does reflect the dedication they had in doing the work necessary to get through the certification program, but it goes beyond that - this music is also about who they are going to be helping others as life and business coaches in the future.

I'm so glad you liked this piece.

A visit to your site was a treat - I love your work. EWQL was used in part of the piece and I also used some of the Jam Pack orchestra sounds as well (the Cor Anglais for example) since they sounded pretty good too.

Excellent work
Nice opening theme, and good choice to cast the hero as the rich solid-sounding trombone, love it. Great orchestration. There was one place (0:57) where the two trombone notes hit together as if played on a keyboard (need to adjust dynamics/timing on one to loosen them apart a bit), but that's the only super minor nit... really nice ending. And this does indeed act as a perfect "cap" for the Hero's journey, Bravo! And welcome home!

I'm so pleased to hear from you and your careful ear. I'll be reworking this as there are a number of things that I hear AFTER posting (of course) that now drive me crazy. Didn't catch the trombones you mentioned tho' - good call. I would like to tighten up the timing and the end needs a little work to close up the ral. better.

Loved your repost of Rainy March. I seem to recall another rendition by the Soggy Bottom Boys, but then I could be all wet....

I remember that we had the opportunity to arrange something written for piano in high school and then the band would play it. Hard to do for sure, plus I didn't have the benefit of a piano to hear what I was doing in the arrangement. It worked out OK but there is so much more to learn about orchestration - even now!!! It's fun though. Thanks for your comments and it's nice to hear your work as well.

The mid section reflected an intent to take a breath from the pomp and power of the opening before really going to town on the finish. I wanted it to be very minimalist and incorporating a different melody line initially, with the main theme reappearing slowly at first then with more and more of the orchestra piling on.

I have really enjoyed my visit over to your site to catch up over the last year. It's always a pleasure to hear your fine work.

	Cheers Richard Glad you liked it. Although I didn't have a military theme in mind, it's interesting how music evokes certain images in people's minds. The hero I was writing about was more an adventurer as in Homer's Odyssey but the basic attributes are similar for sure.
